On another note, I just discovered that for some reason I can't "chmod +x file.pl"

User doesnt gain execute permissions. Hmmm.

Download chroot and sudo gainroot and you should be golden

We use an IPSEC VPN, cisco.

You can probably link up to an SSL based VPN using OpenVPN, which vpnc (can get off the devel repositories) also supports. If you get the vpnc-gui, it's all pretty plug and play type stuff, very nice.

Hi,

Could you please dump the output of fdisk -l here? I'd like to see the partition setup on the N900.

This is a fluke meter for techies folks.

If you don't know what a Fluke device is, you probably shouldn't own this phone either. I guess that about sums it up.

It's a Linux box.. with a phone.

It's not a phone, with "some OS" on it.

If you don't know how to even check your phones uptime, you probably shouldn't own it. This phone is definitely targeted for people who really do some serious IT work.

You should maybe pass your opinions onto the Nokia staff that are selling the phone. Not Carphone warehouse or phones4u but the staff member i spoke to in the nokia store in Heathrow. while inquiring about the phone not once did he say this is aimed towards the techies. it was sell sell sell (as expected from a salesman) He let me have a play and then took my details so when i next pass through hopefully soon i can pick one up

if nokia have been so clear that this is not for the mainstream community they need this information to filter down to their lower staff. people can harp on all they want about this is a techy phone dont buy it bla bla bla bla but if a nokia representative will not even let you know its a techy phone what chance does any average joe got. they will not read press releases from nokia or go on forums to check that the phone they have seen isnt just for techies

I can hear "well he is a salesman what do u expect?". i dont expect a nokia salesman to sell a "It's a Linux box.. with a phone" as a phone. for them to then come on here voice how disappointed they are and then get shot down in flames.

what Nokia had planned and what Nokia are selling seem to be two very different things. as someone has already said a lot of people are going to buy this and be very disappointed and take it back or resell. This you can all agree is neither good for Nokia the N900 or Maemo5

GOD, This device is not for you...

This device is for techies and people who like gadgets and coding and messing around with tech stuff...
To be honest, everyone who knows what the N900 is knows that. I mean my father even knows that...

There is stuff like MMS missing - BUT IT WILL BE HERE SOON!

Why don't people show a little patience and wait a short while, Nokia will have it soon.

Its not like Apple where only when the 3GS came out they added MMS!! Even now it's lacking proper full bluetooth support.

Um maybe because he was a salesman?. If you buy a device based entirely on the sales pitch of a guy who GETS PAID TO SELL PHONES, then .... words fail me.

Do some damn research, I realize that may involve some actual effort on your part - but hey try it this once - you might like it.

2: Portrait (there'll be some portrait coming soon, but not enough for me & the day-to-day end-user)

3: It lacks phone functionalities, which normal users look for now a days. So Nokia failed at that aspect, it's just a better N810

4: No Navigator and stand-alone number keys which makes the physical full QWERTY keyboard less usable.

5: Reduced screen size comparing with N810 and the battery is a lot bit too small for this kind device.

6: Lack of Capacitive screen + with multitouch (it's a step back in technology, at least to the normal users)

Over-all, the device is a powerful machine, but it just doesn't bring it to todays expectations. The freedom + power isn't enough to sell to those people who expect more phone-power (yes, I know, phone second, etc, etc....still disappointing for most people looking for an all-in-one device)
I'd only recommend it to techies.

What I found that I was unable to do, was to send events from the calendar over email/etc using vcard or vcalendar.

Did I miss this somehow?
