Just to note I worked around this by assigning a static address in the wlan settings and entering opendns IP addresses for the nameserver addresses in the same settings page ( 208.67.220.220, 208.67.222.222). This would work for anyone running into the same problem who is in a position to use a static IP on their wlan connection.

For people without that luxury, I don't know..

On a related note (relates to your screenshot of the FM tuner app). Has anyone got the FM tuner working? Mine does absolutely nothing useful.

The red indicator says 87.5 MHz all the time. I can scroll the dial (background) back and forth to other frequencies, but no matter how much I scroll, it always stays at 87.5 and if I save a radio channel, I can give it a name, but it will be automatically saved with 87.5. The play button to the left of "Save station" does nothing and the jump buttons left and right do nothing. So... do I need to install some FM tuner enabler or should this work with just this one software? I have my headphones connected as an antenna.

Re: N900 Owners Thread (First impressions, ...)

I must must must must must say that the N900 is the greatest phone I have ever touched. The screen responsiveness is second to non, almost as sensitive as a capacative touch, I have had 0 reboots and have had no troubles with mic so far. The phone is much better than n97 but i agree this device is not a phone, hold it to your ear to answer a call and you know you are holding it. Its not too big but it is certainly substantial and makes the iphone nd n97 feel almost cheap due to them being so light. I permit everyone go and get this phone :D

why should the device reboot out of a sudden anyway?

i assume those reboots are a result of doing some strange stuff with the device rather than random reboots while the device is idle, right?

Or hardware defect issues. Some people are experiencing reboot problems while others are not. This is even with factory defaults and a reflash of the OS so there's nothing installed.

im not so sure, having lurked around here for a while and read many a post on this issue, it looks to me as though a fair few devices do have hardware issues... :s

k, got mine 2 hours ago delivered to work. (Amazon order-shipped on Friday night with Amazon Prime 1 day shipping).

So far I've started it up, synced across all my contacts via bluetooth from my 6610 navigator (painless)..

Watched the intro vid

Sent and received a couple of sms's

Made a phone call (i hear fine, mic also works)

Can't do any data because I'm roaming in USA, no data :( wifi at work is restricted. Will do all my browsing and testing tonite.

Right now the phone is charging via USB on my laptop.

Will post updates as I find new things :)

BTW people, Gpodder works in portrait mode. I'm so used to holding the darn thing in landscape mode that when I hung up on a call just now I noticed that Gpodder had switched to portrait mode.

Can someone design an mp3 player that works in portrait mode? Please?
That's the only thing that I think I need in portrait mode.

My unboxing has been in my sig for several days. It was posted in the UK thread at the time. For screen shots,

Random photo from the garden

My 'Connected Life' screen

N900 photographing itself on TV

Another random photo - tescos.

Random doodle done in sketch and saved as a screenshot.

Is that what you wanted?

And congrats to the new arrivals. :)

Re: N900 Owners Thread (First impressions, ...)

Mine came with a defective screen :(
Already had to wait 3 weeks to receive it. Now I will have to part with it for another 2 weeks to have it repaired. Not only that, but I also have to pay to have it shipped to wherever they do repairs.
But as much as I was able to enjoy it, so far it's better than iPhone, especially since I'm on T-Mobile and can now use 3.5G internet for just $5.99.

Hey, quite right to be skeptical.. It could all be one vast conspiracy, you never know...

Here's a variation on the old trick of a photo with today's newspaper.. :D

Re: N900 Owners Thread (First impressions, ...)

I just got my N900 but am only getting 2.5g -- despite t-mobile's maps claiming I'm in a 3G area.

(Oh, and the mic works -- woohoo. I turned it on before charging)

My t-mobile sim was originally obtained in 2003 and I got the t-mobile vpn internet (internet3.voicestream.com) when it was GPRS only. When EDGE came out, I was fine when I upgraded to an N95.

Is there such a thing as a 3G SIM? Am I going to have to get a new one? (and a new plan) :-(

Could someone please confirm if the screen on the n900 is glass, as on the iphone's and HD2's? Or plastic? Would having a plastic screen reduce its vividity?

It's plastic. The phone on max brightness looks beautiful, especially videos.

One thing I will say, there does not seem to be any transreflectance for outside use. I tried it outside today and it's hard to see anything much on the screen. I had a 9300 and the transreflectance on it was very good.

I had to drive a mile down the road, then I got 3.5g. Guess that means I don't get 3.5g at work -- but I can do wifi there -- if this thing will do WPA2 enterprise with PEAP.

speedtest.net is reporting 1.01mbps / 0.29 mbps. This is in northern Delaware.

Other first impressions. I can't add a new APN for some reason. Looks like you only get one.

No ssh client? Gotta figure out how to do that (no, haven't even looked yet)

Interesting device appears to have a lot of potential if someone knew what they were doing would like to see a print program developed for this and couple of other tweeks. Can Linux programs be downloaded to the device?

Be careful. That kind of attitude will get you a brick in no time. You can install programs from something called extras-testing and extras-devel, but don't just go on there and start installing stuff left and right. Testing and devel releases are unstable and the only reason you are able to install them is so you could report back the bugs you find.

If you install a lot of programs at the same time, it's harder to tell what screwed up your device. Also, unless you know exactly how to reset your N900 when stuff goes wrong, please reconsider installing any of the unstable apps.

I took the same pic with my iPhone 3GS and my Nokia N900.

Amazing difference. I retook the iPhone pic a few times and posted the best one. Only one shot with the N900.

I'm VERY happy with the N900! :)
