Its indeed very irrelevant to discuss this much with this useless thread that already is deviating a lot from the purpose. But since you had a brain diarrhea and decided to vomit ignorance I needed to lower the level to actually try to communicate with you.

I just dont understand your hatred with Nokia and its products, and still hanging around the forum. And if that is being a fan boy, then I am one.

And hey kiddo, I got what you want. You just want someone to agree with you cos you life is kinda pointless and you are probably in the basement of mama... Fanboy is leaving Mr. Big Guy.

ps. wish you the best luck with da ladies

What are you talking about? Why are you turning things around? Haha! You're just taking my own words & turning them into some epic childish insult against me. Well done buddy, well done! - Fail.

Judging by your childish behaviour & bad grammar, I could picture you being a hideous freak, trying to get all e-hard & pretending to know anything about mobile technology! Haha - pitiful!
I don't hate Nokia, and I never said I do? =S I've only been defending a man's free opinion about the device! You might want to change your pills, it's giving you hallucination. Refrain from logging on this site, I doubt it's adequate for your intellect & you're just making an UTTER fool out of yourself.

Well, seeing as I've been with my fiancée for over two years now, I am a very lucky man, thanks. One big reason why I need MMS support. (you do mention women a lot, are you a lonely man? - with that attitude I don't think anyone could stand you in real life & I doubt you're a handsome young man, with an interesting personality...so, good luck finding your other half (gross))

Farewell Shrek.

N900 Never Fails To Impress

Hi all, I just want to say WOW!!!! I purchased the N97 thinking it would be the best thing since sliced bread to later turn out to be the biggest pile of .... ever!!! However after selling that and now having played with my beautiful new N900 for a week or so I can only class my time with a simple phrase "WOW".

The latest thing that I have come across is the uPnP on the device and how FLAWLESS this with DLNA works on the device. Has anyone tried hooking it to their home network and going to their Media player???? Notice anything at the bottom of the screen....????

AMAZING!!!!!

Sorry for babbling

Give it up God. He's obviously rubber and you're obviously glue and everything you say bounces off him and sticks to you.

Can you upload the media file that's not working for you somewhere?
PM me the link if you wish, I'll take a look.

Hrmm. Not sure this is working correctly on my N900/windows. Can you expound a little on how you have your device etc configured?

Are you sure this doesnt only happen when connected via the cable?

Thanks for the mini-review. I appreciate getting different people's perspectives of the same things (size of the device, keyboard, phone application, etc.). I feel like I can average the many perspectives out in my head and get a better sense of the device, before I possibly buy it.

One follow up question. You say:

What do you not like about the icon quality and the UI?

From the screen shots I've seen it reminds me a lot of the Gnome desktop, from which the sensibility of the Hildon interface for Maemo is in a sense derived (Hildon is a project of Gnome, the most used desktop in Linux--for those who don't know). One of the things I like about Gnome is that the Icons and UI, to me, are not over designed. They look pleasing, but simple and functional. To me this is in contrast to all the other current major desktops, for computers (Windows, OS X, and KDE-- KDE is the other major Linux desktop). To me Windows, OS X, and KDE have all gone in a design direction that is too flashy, too dominated by useless animations, and prefers very cartoony icons. I find this distracting and more about eye candy than function; often giving only the semblance of user-friendliness, without actually being user-friendly. It can be cool at first, but for me becomes annoying quickly.

As you say, it's a matter of personal preference, but I sort of dread what a more "polished" Maemo might mean. So I'd just be curious if you could elaborate more on what you didn't like about the icons and UI in this respect. Thanks.

I guess they just seem too dull for me, I prefer more eye candy I guess... some XDA roms for the TP2 look great, and I also like the android UI. It just seems a little boring to me, though I'm not familiar with Gnome so those who are might like it better than I

Re: N900 Owners Thread (First impressions, ...)

well here it goes...first impressions.
I have been using this device since last night and i think i have a good idea of the phone.

Just for reference I am coming from the G1 so i will probably compare it to that a couple of times.
HARDWARE:
First off the deice is beautiful.
I have spent a lot of time just looking at the device.
Buttons are solid and have good travel.
The keyboard took awhile to get used to but after you use it foir awhile it is very comfortable.(I have big hamds for reference)
The slider mechanism is solid and snaps into place. I like how there is no spring mechanism because those wear out.
The camera slider slides smoothly and does not touch or rub on the lens or on anything else.

SIZE.
Again remember i have big hands so it could vary.
The device is a perfect size for me. It fits well in my hand. Also it has some heft to it and i like that. Makes you feel like you are holding a 600 dollar device. I think it fits better in my pocket than my G1. I like bigger devices soo, but i know bulky. Sidekick lx 2009 ks bulky and this is no whernear tha size.

SCREEN:
Im coming from a capacitive so here it is.
The screen is far superior to any resistive screens I have ever used. It only needs slight pressure for it to respond. I have no complaints with the screen and that was my main worry. I have fallen in love with the stylus.
Oh man, i havent mentioned how stunning it iswhen it is on. Videos have great color and dark blacks.
The size of the screen is perfect, not too big, not too small.

SOFTWARE
First off it is very polished OS. After about an hour I got a hang of the menus. After i got familiar with it, i loved it. I was a big Android fan and I have completly forgot about it. Settings are easy to access and are finger friendly. Broswer is amazing. Sometimes it takes a little long to load but when it does it looks just like it does on a desktop. MULTITASKING is the maun reason why i spent so much money on this device and it has not dissapointed.
One thing I really miss is portrate mode. But, the positives outweigh the negatives in software.

SPEED
Its Fast, Talladega Fast. Lol
on a serious note it is a huge jump in performance from my G1.UI is snappy and responsive.

Man im getting tired....
over all i am very pleased with the device and I cant wait for future updates.

I would like to mention that in BeMeBlackBox you do NOT have to press "Save" if you crash. The file save is triggered by the accelerometer, when you can configure the trigger G force.
The YouTube upload is a one-click operation.

  1. Launch the phone application.
  2. Tap the top bar to open the menu.
  3. In the menu that opens, tap "Turning control".
  4. In the dialog that opens, tap check "Launch by turning"
  5. Tap the "Save" button.

Re: N900 Owners Thread (First impressions, ...)

First post on talk.maemo and its straight from my brand new n900 :).
The hardware is just great, and i havent yet been hit by any of the issues people have been talking about. Bright and wonderful screen.. gmail setup went just fine over it. It is pretty slow when it loads up and i hope a fix for that is coming in.
Internet radio works great ootb.
Skype calling and integration is just perfect, i wish they would start supporting dtmf tones over skype as well but its not something i can hold against maemo or nokia.
keyboard is a pain for now, but thats something i guess will grow on you after time..
one niggle was with the wlan connection, the connection was added the minute the device was up and running, but within a few hrs inactive, the browser would not load pages, the mail client is still working though, just the browser tossing 404 for sites like google. I had to reconnect to the wlan to get it up and running again. Has anyone else seen this happen?
All in all it is a great device, and the phone works well too.
Just hope that they do bring portrait mode to more than the browser would make it a real sweet piece then.

How about this.

How fast is the N900 browser compared to a normal sized laptop (Say a dual core) using the same wlan connection/line?

The N900 is probably slower, but by how much?

On my iMac Vs N900
Open dabr.co.uk 1sec, 2sec
Open slashdot 1 sec, 3 sec

these are very rough times done using my eye and mental timings.
My experience has been that the N900 browser speed is more down more to how much JavaScript is on the page (more=slower pages). But it can cope with *every* website (Facebook is slow and painful, but that could just be Facebook ;) )

Nokia isn't prone to those type of specific statements, but if they're planning all that stuff, and if they are true to the statements Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo made to the financial community today that "we will execute," well, then they can only stand to gain by clearly mapping out what I as a consumer can expect in terms of updates.

BTW I find this thread excellent for showing the potential and what's possible with the N900 in terms of it being a mobile computer. Still, I think it could be merged with other similar threads.

It is not just Nokia, I can't think of ANY public profit making company that makes anything more than vaugue statements about what is upcoming or when.

The thing about all of the "missing" features is that each one of those presents the market with an opportunity to build and SELL an application to do that (whilst being aware that some future version of Maemo may include that feature by default).
The good thing is that almost all of the code for the Maemo platform is available for potential developers to look at, which makes debugging *much* easier. My understanding is that the bits that are not open, are wrapped around specific hardware, and have API's available.

Re: N900 Owners Thread (First impressions, ...)

Hello everyone! :) My first post! ;)

I bought my N900 last week and so far I am loving it. My initial impression of the device was excellent. I understood that this is still a learning process for both Nokia and me so I wasn't too critical of issues.

Number 1 thing that really impressed me was the resistive screen. It is by fat the best one I've used. very smooth and responsive. Although I still have to get used to scrolling a list without actually using an icon. lol ;)

Here are some things I hope gets improved. These may have already been discussed but oh well...

Mail For Exchange - Google sync is one of my favorite features and I was disappointed that it is spotty with the N900. I understand from the developer that this is not an issue on Nokia's side but more of Google's implementation. So I hope Nokia bends a little for its customers or Google fixes it for us.

Phone - accessing the phone can sometimes be slow especially when using the Turning Control feature. From sleep whats the fastest way to get to call someone? Any tips?

Open processes - sometimes it lags when I want to close a process or a note like text.

These are some of the things I can think of right now. These aren't issues for me but more of a little bump on the road which I hope Nokia will smooth out in the coming weeks. :)

Thanks!

John

Re: N900 Owners Thread (First impressions, ...)

Finally got my N900 yesterday. Really loving the device! Great bit of kit! Not had any problems with the actual device as of yet but im quite p*ssed off that I can’t actually use the phone functions yet. The dumb guy at the Nokia shop put my port to go through (from my old 3 sim to my new Vodafone sim) next Monday. This means that my new sim doesn’t actually work yet and my old 3 sim isn’t being accepted by the N900 I knew this would be a problem before I purchased but didn’t think I’d need to use my 3 sim. So at the moment im stuck with a great internet tablet but still using my N95 as my phone… kinda took the joy out of getting the phone.

Anyway been having a little look though this thread for useful information. Found the link to MaeMaps which was quite cool, got that saved on my desktop now and tried downloading a few apps from the download section which was all cool.

Does anyone know if there is any kind of work around to getting 3 sims to work in the N900?

And also, is there any other useful links/information that could come in handy (such as MaeMaps)? Id be thankful for any advice tips or tricks.

Thanks people… hope your all enjoying you N900’s as much as I am!

Re: N900 Owners Thread (First impressions, ...)

I like everything about the phone except the battery issue, the phone is dying way too fast for unknown reasons.
I hope nokia will address this issue because its making me real sad, I want to enjoy the phone for longer hours and about 4 to 5 hours is way too little.

I don't know if an update will fix this?!!

It's because your hand is casting an intermittent shadow on the ambient light sensor, and it's trying to compensate. But there's a time delay of a few seconds, so it's not obvious what's going on.

I wish there was a way to turn off this behaviour. I would be quite happy to change the brightness myself when I'm working in a dark place. It's only two clicks to adjust the screen brightness.

Regards,
Roger
