Re: N900 Owners Thread (First impressions, ...)
An update for anyone who read my post about using vpnc to connect to my work VPN.
Just a warning. If you connect to a Cisco VPN concentrator using vpnc while connected to a cellular network (i.e. - NOT wifi), the software will connect, prompt for password, and then appear to successfully connect while throwing an error. Afterwards you will not be able to work on anything inside your network, and upon disconnecting your DNS will no longer work. You can ping IP addresses, etc, but no DNS names will resolve. I fixed it by reflashing but it is probably something that could be resolved in /etc/resolv.conf. I haven't checked because I don't want to attempt it again yet. But if anyone has the balls, please try and let the rest of us know. You can get vpnc and the vpnc-gui from the maemo-devel repository, but remember, it's still in development if you try it. I'd be interested to know if anyone else has similar behavior when trying to connect via a cellular network. |

Re: N900 Owners Thread (First impressions, ...)
hi.. i've been following maemo and N900 since September now. Now that i have my own N900 and very happy in it. No broken mics here and other issues posted here.. well some issues listed here dosnt bother me since i have experience on Android G1. Its exactly the same feeling, an amazing phone with some emptiness because of missing apps. and i know those will be fulfilled in upcoming updates. so i will wait for updates. So ... my comments about the tab/phone
Positive: im pretty sure you guys know all positive in this phone.. one word (amazing) Negative: well not really negatives but rather suggestion for the community to add. I know this phone is more like a beta or a prototype for whats ahead. but, im expecting it to be more a consumer friendly. for the community, can we add for communication apps like IM's, especially for me. i Need, yahoo and Facebook chat to be on whenever i need it on the go. Conclusion: This device is very young and i have lot of hopes on this one. Just like the G1 being criticized of the design when it came out, i believe in this community can do more, more than what nokia itself can do. I thank the community in advance... you too nuknuk... giving hope and entertainment in time of need.:D |
Re: N900 Owners Thread (First impressions, ...)
Got my phone yesterday, it is absolutely fantastic.
I couldn't believe how small it is! Really cute! I was disappointed, but not surprised that I couldn't watch BBC iPlayer using the browser, very slow and jerky. Maybe that will get better with the v10 of flash, that would be awesome! Bad Points first: 1) Email app varies from really snappy to laggy (2 minutes to respond). I am wondering whether this is specific to imap, as I've seen a couple of complaints about it but 99% seem very happy with it. (or perhaps wireless signal in my house in certain places) In fact it seems it is, when it's next to my desktop I get 1 bar on the wifi (desktop is at 75% and has an antenna, so probably interference) 2) OVI (maps needs work, it's not intuitive enough and is laggy) I tried to use nokia messaging, but even though the website shows n900 as supported, when you try and download the client it says unrecognised device and gives you options of various symbian devices. Doesn't support OVI contacts sync OVI store is not live yet for n900 3) contact/calendar sync is for windows only people (or gmail) which is kind of bizarre on this kind of device, but hopefully ldap/egroupware sync will come later. 4) It's too good, I never thought I would experience pain in my thumbs and fingers from using it that much... Good Points: 1) Browser is pretty damned good, flash is not quite as good as desktop (for youtube) but it's pretty close - a pretty impressive feat. 2) FM transmitter is such a cool feature. 3) General UI interface is fantastic. Overall this is a serious device, it has a few missing features here and there and a couple of rough edges - but with a device like this it is to be expected. It's essentially trying to be a device for everything, which is not going to be easy to achieve. But I've decided already that I will be buying the next device with maemo 6 on it. If that is going to be "the device" then I am almost scared with what is to come. A big hat's off and congratulations to everyone involved with this device/OS etc. (And if Nokia get the problems with their web shop ordering system corrected for next time, I would be even happier) |
Re: N900 Owners Thread (First impressions, ...)
I just got mine today and I really love it! :D
One little (and potentially very silly :o ) question: The sales package did not include a memory card, right? And yes, I did a search... However, not a very thorough one since I'm too busy with my new device. :p |

Been playing with N900 for 3hrs now. Loving this thing! Will soon start to download and transfer stuff to it. |
Re: N900 Owners Thread (First impressions, ...)
I have mine now for about 2 hours and i did nothing but use it.
I have to say, i'm not happy. I already had 2 or 3 reboots :/ Its sometimes very slow and sometimes it doesn't view what it is expected to view (not very clear what i mean: for example i call the menu and it stops half way through the animation) One thing i absolutly want is listening to my music with my bluetooth headset and that works. But not always in a good way, often it skips. Also i noticed a lot of graphics failures, like scrolling list which do not update when you scroll them. As i wanted to use it as my primary phone i may have to send it back if it will proof it self not beeing stable. I'm very sad because i don't see an other phone which is as good as the n900 could be and i wont buy an other phone. :( Will there be firmware updates soon? Do you have to enable the swap? Or is it enabled by default? (I didn't find an option) I hope Maemo 5 will improve soon so that i can keep it. |

Re: N900 Owners Thread (First impressions, ...)
I've recieved my N900. Finally the wait is over!
My first impressions are very positive. My previous smartphone is a Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1, by hardware a very nice device, should have the bang with its 528Mhz processor, but it just hasn't got the kick and smoothness. Which is absolutely bonkers! Bloody Windows Mobile made it almost the slowest device I ever owned... But then the N900, holy crap. My first expression was: It's a iPhone experience but 200% better. The multitasking is an absolute bliss. I usually have 2 or more concurring msn chats going while browsing the internet, listening to music and take a photo now and then. Not a problem at all. The device challenge you to open as much as you can to see if it will ever slow down. To be honest the lack of MMS or voice dailing are a non-issue for me. Frankly I couldn't care less. MSS is outdated and should be banished (old, slow and rediculous prices in the Netherlands). Voice dailing, had it on 5 mobile phones, never used once. I'm very enthousiastic to see an almost daily increase in software availability! Think I'm going to sign up for software testing so the community can release more software from the extras-testing to the extras repository! Although Nokia describes this device step 4 out of 5 it is an absolute bliss to use, the complete integration of different accounts like msn, yahoo and such makes it so much more easier to stay connected on different channels with my friends, family and other contacts. |
Re: N900 Owners Thread (First impressions, ...)
My 11 seasons of Top Gear play straight away with N900 with no work needed!!! New season is in HD(1.5GB files), but just since this season so i only need to change those 3 episodes.
The 700mb files i'm playing now on the N900 look amazing on the screen and TV :D |

2) IF you see the satellite antenna symbol it means the GPS unit is on, and consuming power. And yes if on it does comsume quite a bit of power. My N810 will only run around 6 hours with the GPS unit on. If the symbol is flashing it means that GPS unit is trying to establish a fix. If you are not needing it (like when indoors) you should turn it off to increase uptime. 2) The Load applet is two small barcharts on the the status bar. The left bar is processor load. The bar on the right seems to be the amount of memory that applications/data are using. |
Re: N900 Owners Thread (First impressions, ...)
first big bad impression on n900 .....the aplication for reaching the gps didnt turn off manualy only after i reset the phone (this is damn not good)
and another question .....how can we use on n900 the yahoo messenger? |

Re: N900 Owners Thread (First impressions, ...)
I have an N900 on loan for a week and here are my first impressions:
1) This is an amazing device - that needs to be said upfront. The hardware on this particular device functions perfectly. 2) Battery life is bad - I have barely taxed it and am already at 75%. 3) Touchscreen is very responsive, but it still needs some optimization tweaks from Nokia. 4) The 2 apps I've downloaded & installed, Hermes and MaStory, are excellent. Major kudos to the devs. 5) In a span of 1.5 hours the keyboard began 'making sense.' It also feels great. 6) The screen is gorgeous and not too small. 7) Xvid files I've downloaded play perfectly. 8) Being able to make a Skype call and have it feel like a cellular call is AWESOME! For this alone I thank the Nokia gods.I should mention that I am not a phone power user, so 2 profiles are fine for me. The phone app is great for me - I have no complaints. So - all in all - I feel that this device is perfect for me. I am definitely buying another charging cable for work - and another battery. For me and my needs, Nokia has hit a homerun! |
Re: N900 Owners Thread (First impressions, ...)
I got my N900 yesterday, installed a lot of applications and i found the N900 very stable, more so than my N810.
And it's very very fast in loading, browsing, etc. Email works fine. I put a screen of google wordproc. and google spreadsheet on the desktop, works fast enough for me... Overall it is even better than I expected, after lurking on many sites for the last months!! One thing: What i would like is syncing Google calender to the N900 calender though. I could get contacts using PC Suite from Outlook 07, but no other data. It states that the N900 is not yet supported. I wonder if google calender online will be fast enough in practise.. |

Can this be an hardware problem or will this become better with the next update? All in all i have to say that i'm really happy now thought. :) Yesterday i called my dexktop PC over XMPP, I called a friend over Skype and an other friend called me over GSM! Take that iPhone! I love the way everything is integrated! |

Also the facebook app uses quite a bit of cpu power every time it autoscrolls, which will have an effect on your battery life as well. As long as you don't have the facebook app in the display which is showing there is no such effect, however, so make sure you switch to a different screen after you've checked the app. |

Well, after browsing this and other sites for the last month i decided that the n900 was the phone for me...i went to the NFS on Regent Street on tuesday and ordered it...can't believe i had to wait 3 whole days to get it!! ;-)....
Been playing with it since yesterday nearly non stop and i have to say that it's absolutely superb - i love it. Battery life is fine if you follow the tips on this site somewhere, no reboots as yet and the mic works....very pleased, well done Nokia :-) |

Re: N900 Owners Thread (First impressions, ...)
Does N900 have some firewall that could block the outgoing SIP calls voice and is there something I can do about it?
When I'm calling from SIP account (my operator Saunalahti Finland provides a service called Nettipuhelin), I can hear the other person just fine but he/she can't hear me. So could this be some proxy, firewall etc. related issue or what? I'm using 3G and following settings: Transport: UDP Outbound proxy: voip.saunalahti.fi Port: 5060 Discover public address: checked Loose routing: checked Keep-alive mechanism: Auto Keep-alive period: Auto STUN server: stun.saunalahti.fi STUN port: 3478 I've also tried to leave STUN-settings empty, because Saunalahti recommended to do so (some possible NAT problems), but it didn't help. |
Re: N900 Owners Thread (First impressions, ...)
Had the phone for a few days now and I can honestly say that it is actually lifechanging. Brilliant, brilliant device; more exciting than holding my N93 for the first time. :D
The UI is so damn slick its unbelievable. Fast, responsive, pretty intuitive really and - coming from Symbian - I'm loving the central application install and update hub as a Maemo newbie. Being able to drag down info and pics from Facebook into contacts (Hermes) and have instant messaging/Skype directly in the phone book has been a boon as well. Although constantly being signed in to IM does hit battery life, I find that I stay logged out of IM but set Mail to check my E-mail every 10 minutes. Battery life lasts far longer this way. Openarena is mindblowing with the pixel resolution and dotpitch of the N900 screen. So clear, the same goes for video. The calendar is a stroke of genius; different colours for different gigs etc. As a media type, I work at several seperate studios so I can dedicate a different colour to each one. Slightly annoying that the PC Suite app is...well....a bit crap regarding this and not really N900 FULLY compatible. I'll live. I'm loving the homescreens, widgets and, even though its a beta, having the Firefox logo on there ;) (I'm a label whore :D) Seriously, if you don't have one yet, get the damn thing. Its gorgeous. |

Re: N900 Owners Thread (First impressions, ...)
I've had the n900 a day or so now and wanted to share my first impressions of it. Overall though I'm loving the device, yes it does feel a little unfinished in places, particularly the UI navigation, but I expected that and came into buying it with my eyes open.
Ok, what's cool about the n900: The standard stuff: all the stuff people have been raving about in this thread such as the browser, the multitasking, the screen, the video codec support (played back a couple of ripped DVDs in .avi format and they played flawlessly) Skype integration: this is freakin awesome, being able to switch seamlessly between SMS/Skype chat and between cellphone calls and voip calls is great, and it's all possible from within a person's contact page. And the quality of skype calls is very high, people couldn't really tell if the call was using data rather than voice. mind blowing stuff. The keyboard: I've read some complaints about this in reviews, but I actually find it pretty easy to type on it. yes, the keys are pretty small and this does result in the odd misspress, but once you get used to them you can pick up some speed, the tactile feedback is great. I actually prefer this to the keyboard on my Nokia e90, which to be honest I always thought was a little too big. Hell, I'm posting this on the n900, so it can't be that bad ;) The app store: oh yeah, that's right, the one thing most 'professional' reviewers are soundind dire warnings about is a thing I love. maybe it's coming from a symbian phone where getting/finding apps was an expensive and tortuous business, having them free and on the phone is great, and some of them are extremely useful, particularly the applet for taking screenshots and Mastory for Wordpress, Blogger uploads. And so much other stuff I don't have time to go into: the sharing integration on the camera, multiple desktops, contact fields. Stuff I'm not so keen on: Just a few things really. The music player is pretty basic, it doesn't handle playlists or album art very well. the UI navigation is still a bit confusing, intuitively I don't know how to get from one place in the UI to another and will often go somewhere I don't want to go first before getting to where I want to be. If that makes any sense at all! But these are minor niggles, overall it's an awesome device and for those of you still waiting for it - yes I know it's a cliche - but it really is worth the wait. |
