Re: N900 Owners Thread (First impressions, ...)

Had mine since staurday didn't like the screen was a bit sticky, but then again I'm an iPhone user but it's one of those devices the more you play with it the more you grow to like it. However, the screen is much more responsive with the stylus.

I find typing on the keyboard is very slow I prefer the iPhone keyboard I can type much much much faster. It a bit weird to hold the n900 with keyboard open and then try to type. People with small hands may experience problems typing with their thumbs coz it does feel chunky. And may not be able to get across to all keys comfortably.

Cut copy and paste how do you select text on a web page it's not possible if your typing an email you can copy but from webpages I haven't worked it out if there is a way.

Facebook I would prefer an app for this as browsing the full site is annoying as the web pages don't lock to the screen size there is always a little missing and very fiddly.

YouTube very slow, plays flash but not the best experience I'd prefer th flash videos to play in the media player as on the iPhone works much better try to forward or rewind on the web page really annoying as the web page moves all ovr the place why can't the webpages just fit to screen?

By the way I'm typing this on my iPhone I find it much more comfortable and faster to type.

Nokia open keyboard on flat surface again the phone wobbles coz of the camera on back.

Videos recording fps rate is very slow replay not smooth at all. Photo quality is good screen does seem to flicker when focusing on subject.

N900 is a decent phone and hopefully things will get better and better.

Was thinking of getting rid of my iPhone but have decided to keep it along with the Nokia N900 As the games and range of apps you get on iPhone is just brilliant also I really do like the iPhone onscreen keyboard.

You might prefer lite.facebook. Heck I prefer that on the desktop and laptop since it won't load all the annoying applications that people tend to use now.

Ugh Farmville.

Re: N900 Owners Thread (First impressions, ...)

I was working when my baby girl was delivered on Friday so here’s my unboxing activities (I like to torture myself sometimes...)
10.13 delivery
11.30 opened outer box
12.15 opened inner box
1.00 (lunch time) held my baby for the first time, whilst watching the 2 promotional videos
1.10 flicked through user manual and unboxed cables etc
1.25 inserted SIM and battery
1.30 peeled off protective cover (WOW!) and switched on and had a play
1.50 made a call to check mic worked (YES!)
1.51 put on charge
5.30 installed MooBox, Bounce, Nako, SuperTux and had more play, testing what I could
Had a bit of an issue with GPS location (had to install eCoach to kickstart GPS), but apart from that everything seems to work so far. Not tested FM receiver / transmitter, or PC synchronisation yet.
WELL WORTH THE WAIT. I’m a happy N900 owner :)
...Just a shame I got my preorder on the day it was in the shops!
The screen was a bit sticky initially, but ok now. So far the only negative is it that it is difficult to use it whilst smoking!

Nice observation... I'm also a smoker (unfortunantly) so, I'll be having the same problem... :p

there are so many youtubes movies or other reviews that explain this.. i gues google for "cursor mode in browser of N900" or something.

or just swipe your finger from the left to the right on the left side of the screen (going into the screen) in the browser..

the video player is pretty pants, there are a lot of codecs both audio and video it doesn't like, been able to play one video out of five so far, and that had artifacts.

roll on VLC.

Hey guys (at long last).
received mine this morning and yes I'm impressed. Can;t quite get the scrolling properly yet without accidentally opening windows but I'm getting there.
WOW to the sound from the media player through the earphones and wicked resolution (in the 9 trailer).
Had one or two reboots but it's much happier now I'm on 3G for soem reason. Screen protector i got was useless. very thick- totally unlike another i had on my 95 and it's a fraction too big.. so hunting for a nicer one.

Received mine on Friday (12/4/09) and absolutely loving it. It was a long over due for me to change my N95 that I had since launch.

Fortunately, haven't had any reboots or issues so far :)

Agree. N900's sound quality is damn good comparing to my ipod classic 120gb. I'm sort of an audiophile so this was great news :D

After all the hassles etc I'm glad you've got yours before Xmas too. I reordered from nokia.co.uk (play.com still say 31/12/09) and still only got mine on Friday. Luckily Nokia got their act together in the end!
BTW I assumed that screen protector was just packaging.

Damnit!

Finally received, and t-mobile coverage completely dies about a mile before my house, even though coverage map says it's got "good" coverage.

This is one sweet little device though, hopefully the next version supports 3G on AT&T :/

matmull: Don't you just use your own wifi at your house?

mattmull 2009-12-10 00:47

Re: N900 Owners Thread (First impressions, ...)

I have wifi at the house, but I really need cell/data service at and around my house, for things like walking the dog, bike rides, etc... Is there a way to force calls to go over skype instead of celluar, but have it be seamless?

Plus if the car ever broke down on that stretch of road when I was alone with my little kids , it would suck not having a cell phone.

Edit: I think my previous post made it sound like just 3G/edge didn't come in, but I lose cellular as well.

Its fantastic, its awesome it works really well. The hype about the awesomeness is true.

I am sorry for those who have had issues but i am certain they are a minority.

I find the iPhone keyboard *really* hard to use the few times i have tried it, but the N900 was easy to use, and after an hour or so of use it was really easy and fast.

First impression from me (just got my N900):

It's close to impossible to use it (w/keyboard) when in horizontal position on the couch (the position I'm always in in my home, except when eating or watching TV).

The N800 is the opposite, i.e. very easy to use in this position.

Hi people!
I'm not shure if this is the right thread but i didn't find a better one...
I'm having some problems with incoming calls and sms. Some people can't phone me. They get the message of "the phone is off or out of coverture".
And the sms get a delay of hours and days!!
Someone has the same problem? May be a cuestion of configuration? In that case, how may i get it fixed?
By the way, im spanish and i use Telefonica. If it helps...

Thanks a lot!

N900 pisses me off

OK, so I've just unboxed my N900. It took me 2 minutes to remove the back plate as I was afraid to break it. The whole thing feels cheap. Then it took me another 2 minutes to put in the sim card as the little metal piece was just falling off. Then I'm still working on configuring the region as it just overscrolls and I can't stop it at English (USA). Typing in the name doesn't do anything, up, down arrows don't work. So for the moment I'm stuck with some language I don't even know.

Not good first impressions. Hope the rest is better.

Re: N900 pisses me off

It does get better. The UI just takes some time getting used to. I had the same sort of problem with scrolling and the touchscreen.

Re: N900 Owners Thread (First impressions, ...)

I have the N900 now for one week. In itself the device is great but, and as you can read on the other forums, there are some issues.
Good, compared to E90:
Large screen, bright
Smaller phone
Fast
Multiple applications
Fast internet
Memory
Ease for calling (most important)
Internet, SMS, mail, etc.

Not good, compared to E90
Reception, old fasion GSM sounds when calling
Set back in software wrt
1. office apps (only view, not edit),
2. OVI navigator, from V3 to V1,
3. Mail for Exchange does not work with the server from work. Even though this is due to the settings at the server at work, the E90 did work!
4. Bluetooth does not always work, not sure why
5. Linux, I am just a user and all the programming stuf and root access is certainly not something I will ever due although I know that it could be very usefull.

Al in al I am happy with the phone and gives the required advantage and hope that the next update solve the mail for exchange issue together with a light weight office application that can edit MS office 2007 docs would be great!

Re: N900 Owners Thread (First impressions, ...)

Have had my n900 for a couple of days. Was a little afraid of opening the back cover as I thought I might break it, but much more comfortable knowing that it is press fit.

The 3 row keyboard gets a bit used to and drove me crazy that I couldnt figure out how to use pipe on xterm. Installed ssh server and now can log onto it using my regular machines so its much faster typing.

Waiting for the ovi store to open up but all in all loving the flexibility that it provides :)

les_garten 2009-12-11 18:55

Re: N900 Owners Thread (First impressions, ...)

Getting the back open is easy and nothing to worry about if done correctly.

1) Stick fingernail in thumb slot and loosen
2) Move thumbnail to other side of that end with the thumb slot and loosen that side of the end.
3) Start on one side near end and loosen with thumbnail
4) Go to other side and loosen with thumbnail.
5) Walk down the sides loosening as you go along.

No drama or worries when done this way. You can also use something like a rounded nail file to slip under edge.

If you just pry it completely off from the nail slot I can see how it would worry you.

Finesse is your friend here.

ok totally new guy here.

Got my n900 couple hours ago. Amazing, hardly any "how to" guides so i am here lost with total basics such as how to transfer music from my ubuntu laptop to n900.

anyway, first impressions. The biggest revelation to me is that this is not a phone. Its a computer with an extra feature like phone in it.

I havent made a call with it yet, and actually coming to think of it, dont even know how to, but i will get there later after going through more of the cooler stuff.

Looking forward to loughing through the forums for some quality tips and info!

Re: N900 Owners Thread (First impressions, ...)

This weekend I had a family gathering in my hometown and had to travel quite a bit by train, so I decided to just take my N900 with me and leave all other devices at home to see how it functioned.

When it was useful:

- On the train, listening to music and watching video to keep me entertained. Having the 32GB memory and the more powerful processor meant I could stuff the phone with loads of unconverted videos. Very handy when I was bored on the train
- when visiting my brother, I hooked up the tv-out to his tv so we could watch some comedy shows he hadn't seen
- my brother wanted to watch some goals from Saturday's football games, so I used the tv out again to stream the video from youtube. He was very impressed by this (and he's a real iphone fanboy!)
- We were in his kitchen getting some food ready and didn't have any decent music, so I beamed music via the fm transmitter to an old clock radio he had there...this seriously blew his mind
- took loads of pictures and immediately sent them off to my social network pages via pixelpipe.
- Had to grade some students' essays, so viewed them via Documents to Go and then sent the marks off to a colleague by email
- Checked email, dashed off messages and had lots of IM chats with friends and family. Conversations is a great interface for this, I know threaded messaging is nothing new but having Skype, Gtalk and SMS all seamlessly integrated is very handy

where I felt it fell short

- as a phone. I don't mean the limited phone interface, I was ready for that, but more to do with the crappy coverage T-mobile seem to have in the UK. Constantly losing the signal, having a weak signal where other networks have full bars, several calls dropped, really poor. I know it's not the phone because I've tried other SIM cards in the phone from O2 and Orange and the signal is strong. However I got the N900 on contract with them so I'm kinda stuck with them. I just gotta hope their merger with Orange will give them more coverage.

- Battery life wasn't great, though I did thrash the 3G a bit on the train so it wasn't a big surprise. About 2 hours of music, 45 mins of video, hour or so of browsing, 30 mins of skype chat, 10-15 photos taken and I was getting the low battery sign. Getting an extra battery at Xmas as it's clear I need it as I use this device a lot

- while I like the N900 keyboard for dashing off short messages and emails, there were times when I needed to write something longer and being able to use my Think Outside BT keyboard would have been great...but sadly this isn't yet compatible

- on a similar subject, there were a couple of times when I could have done with the ability to produce or edit Word documents, but at the moment it's viewing only. Hope we see some third party solutions to this soon.

Overall, very impressed by the device, could turn out to be even more productive than my beloved E90 once more apps are released, it just sucks that it's not really functioning as a phone for me.

I am very pleased with the size. No bulkier than my previous G1. Im 6'3'' for reference.

Also I was having lots of trouble with the keyboard to start with but after the last couple weeks with it I have learned to really enjoy it. Nice big keys with great feedback.

Interesting story, I went to my local radio shack to buy some new headphones. I tested 4 different headphones and none, I mean none sounded better than the ones from Nokia. I tested sonys, skullcandies, and some other brand and the stock headphones are far superior. Im glad to see when you buy a 650$ you get a decent pair of headphones.

at least with the samsung-devices i have/had.
lets see if there is a difference with the n900.

before my samsung devices (u700 and s8000), i had a nokia 6100, which also worked like a charm on my t-mobile card (just like with the samsung-mobiles i had)
i'm still using the same, 7 or 8 year old sim-card (which originally was my fathers) in my current samsung jet. no problems at all.

Re: N900 Owners Thread (First impressions, ...)

FYI, I've had an n810 for ~ 2 years, and my first impression of the n900 is... OMG, the n900 is tiny, compared to the n810, and not in a good way -

I watched plenty of demo videos, and thought I had some idea of the n900 being a bit smaller than the n810, but the difference is quite dramatic when you hold the n900.

I admit that I naively had some idea that the 3 rows of keys on the n900 would mostly just feel like losing a row on the n810, but the whole n900 keyboard is just incredibly small...

In short, I absolutely haaaaaaate the form factor of the n900 and usability vs the n810... especially since I was imagining the n900 as a nice OS upgrade, more storage, and a smoother, faster device... but now I'm mostly trying to decide if I'm already getting a headache squinting at the screen... 3.5" vs 4.1" doesn't sound like a huge difference... but wow, it's really killing my eyes :-/

Believe me, I love the n810 to death, and I really wish the n900 was just as big as the n810 right about now, since I really had almost no interest in the n900 as a phone.

It's funny that I have my Razr v3xx next to the n900 on the table, and the n900 really is only ~ 1/2 inch longer and wider than the Razr, and only ~ 1/3 thicker.
