VNC remote desktop (From the how kewl is this department.)

I just installed x11vnc from maemo-extras-testing on the N900 and fired up a VNC client on the Mac.

Wow!

That’s what I call a real wow…

Re: From the how kewl is this department.

is it possible to do the reverse, i.e. control PC/MAC from N900?

Re: From the how kewl is this department.

Sure, I do it all the time. VNC client is available for N900.

I can see clearly now that I'm going to need to get an NX client and server both running on the N900. ;)

This is great, I really need VNC for remoting into our workstations and server. I do it with my G1 a lot.

But with no trackball/pad, how do you control the mouse and right/left click with a N900? I tried to find an answer to this but never have.

That would be cool!

NX is way, way better, and real time fast. Only problem is that is built on KDE/QT.

Maemo6 should allow NX to work.

Re: From the how kewl is this department.

Qt's available in Maemo 5 as well.

Re: From the how kewl is this department.

I just tried running a VNC server on my Mac and used the N900 VNC client. Slow, but everything works.

Some one needs to cozy up to the NX folks and get them to port an NX client to the N900 right away. It would be a very popular, and useful app.

Ok, I gotta ask again, this is drivin' me nuts...with no trackball/pad, how do you control the mouse and right/left click with a N900?

I assume that every touch on the screen is submitted as a click on that location and right click might be achieved by a modifier key?

VNC is nice, but for locally controlling the N900 from your desktop PC, Synergy would be even cooler imo..
hope it get's ported (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=15044)

In tablet versions of VNC Viewer, you used the + and - hardware keys to get middle and right clicks for the mouse. But pressing these keys on the N900 while in VNC Viewer only adjusts the volume. I'm going to have to do some more research...

Thanks qole. Please let me know. I've been really curious how the mouse is controlled (both guiding and L/R clicking) from a N900 when remoting into a desktop.

I've even seen VNC listed in the apps screen in a N900 video, but it wasn't demonstrated and for all I know might have been VNC server, not he client. I'm not much interested in remoting into a N900, I don't see much point in that anyway. I need to run desktops from a N900.

I would think that you can point with the stylus or your finger?
Or can a mouse pointer be activated as in the default browser?

Re: From the how kewl is this department.

I've got an oddball question.

Since the screen display becomes much more limited using VNCViewer on the tablet, is there a way to remove the Title Bar (blue bar thingie on top that has minimize, maximize, close, etc.) for programs under Windows XP?

It's not really needed and takes up some precious pixels on the display screen.

I've been searching through Google today but can't find the correct answer for this.

in most programs f11 takes care of not showing the blue bar in windows.

Re: VNC remote desktop (From the how kewl is this department.)

Now sorry if I'm hijacking this as it is specific to VNC, whereas my input isn't. I was just wondering if there were any programs that could actually use the browser as a VNC type application. For instance, at work I have connected to servers via a specific port using a web browser - now I'm sorry as I can't for the life of me remember what this is called - but I think it is on HP servers, so is something built into the server. But my point is, could an application be built (if there isn't one already) to connect with a VNC server and then serve its own web based view of the desktop? That way the inbuilt mouse processing - and majority of the application is already on the N900 - along with perfect zooming etc.

I'm certain there are plenty of downfalls with this - the biggest one being that I have a feeling the example I gave ran in the browser using java!?!? Though I'm not entirely sure.

I suppose I'm thinking that if there was a web interface to VNC it would be ideal - but then so would winning the lottery...

Thanks for listening to my spiel anyway.

There is a web interface to VNC but, as you say, it requires java (it actually just serves up a java applet which does all the work).

VNC client on the N900 is a fantastic way to watch what your kid is doing on the computer in another room from the comforts of your couch. I knew there was a parenting reason to own a N900!

Do you think that might actually work if a Java ME was created for the N900 - or do you think it would be too complicated for that type of Java implementation. Though I can't see something like that appearing too soon - if at all. It seems a lot of people want to avoid the java side of things on Maemo. It's all good to know about though!

Both client and server... NX beats VNC hands down in speed, plus there are Microsoft clients too.

How kewl is this? Ridiculously. Brings out the maniac in me, actually.

Opened the VNC client on the N900 FROM the VNC client on the PC, which led me to control the PC from the N900 that I was controlling from the PC. Yes, I cackled quite maniacally. Note the seemingly infinitely recursive desktops!

Ah, the power of the Penguin!

Re: VNC remote desktop (From the how kewl is this department.)

@skalogre, what program did you install on your n900 (was it x11vnc?) to control it from your pc, and did you run into any issues?

mlanner 2009-12-30 18:14

Re: VNC remote desktop (From the how kewl is this department.)

i'm also getting the black screen and the rotating "loading" icon.

do i need to configure x11vnc from the command line first to get it to work? or is there something else i'm missing?

contro 2009-12-30 18:46

Re: VNC remote desktop (From the how kewl is this department.)

mine does the same

Re: VNC remote desktop (From the how kewl is this department.)

Ok I think I figured it out guys install x11vnc and from the terminal on the n900 run it with "x11vnc" this runs it with no password authentication so be carefull. To connect to the phone just get the phone's local ip and type it in on the vnc app you have on your pc. It is a bit slow and if you have a screen timeout on your N900 your viewer will go blank just go to your phone and tap the screen to make the screen on the N900 go back to normal.
