if you block the sun out with your head you can just get around but when you put screen in direct sunlight you got trouble to see anything with amoled.
n900 on other hand is fully usable without any trouble, colours might look off but you can USE your phone in full on direct sunlight

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhQ-fN-TchM This video shows that the N900 has a "protective" screen layer added -> it seems to lower the display quality a lot.

And, btw the N900's screen absorbs the UVA/B rays so that none get reflected to the user's eyes. Well, that statement is more true.

The same type of professional screen protectors are on the devices, so find another thing why n900 display is so horrible in direct sunlight also. I have both, I know it is another weakness point of N900. :(

This is false, he hasnt got any brain in general, but this is another story, this is the default 40% brightness setting, not the maximum. Find another thing, but you cant. N900 display is failed, worst than amoled in direct sunlight too. This is the fact.

video in direct sunlight is taken under huge angle and when you watch that video from 2:25 where samsung got 1/3 screen really in direct sunlight NOTHING is visible.
also angle is NOT the only issue with this "tests" but regardless, they are so pointless it isn't even funny.
at the end of the day FACT is that n900 got great screen, crisp sharp with nice vibrant colour.
is amoled looking better? sure but not by much and on other side LCD is better in direct sunlight, but even if that wasn't the case you clearly got no idea how to perform tests especially direct sunlight test which is why you posting this silly videos

Sunlight steps into the displays in 90 degrees.
And if the Sun is reflecting from the displays, nothing is visible just the Sun, on N900 too. :D
If you like the yellow and its shades as vibrant color, do it, bless you!

And yes, it is hard to accept the truth about N900 display, transflective LCD is failed in direct sunlight next to amoled.

What a shame you only have this device...

I did some comparison shot against a known good (excellent?) Hyundai L90D+ monitor. (This monitor was tested here and proven to be very good in color rendering. In fact that was the main reason I purchased that monitor originally... :D)

To me the N900 isn't that bad. It is a tad yellowish tint, as observed by most. More particularly the gray shades are pretty clean and cover the whole spectrum from black to white.

The test image I used can be found from:
http://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/upl...alibration.jpg

EDIT: Both L90D+ and N900 were at their default settings. On N900 that means the only controllable variable, brightness, was 4 out of 5.

EDIT2: Just to show the dark details rendering differences on Samsung and Nokia on the test video. This is a snapshot of the landing gear. Which one you can see more details? ;)

I suggest you to slow down and read carefully eiffel's post a bit upper.

And OLED research began in the 1950s, that makes it...60 years old? I fail to see the point in mentioning how old any technology is. The radio was invented in 1880 something, 3G uses radio waves, clearly we need those new NPDT programs to come online already.

Nice try, but this video is not about the details.
Anything else?

If it wasn't for the details, then what? The display purpose is to show the picture as close to the original as possible, don't you think?

Now on your new shot the bright areas are messed up... :p

As a summary I'm not at all convinced how much better/worse the displays are to each others based on the youtube video.

Re: AMOLED or LCD

The camera has autofocus and it auto sets the brightness, it is a simple samasung omnia i900. The main point of this video are the colors. Not the details. Send me a HD camera, I dont have it, and N900 transflectiv LCD wont be better, never.

And on amoled the bright areas arent messed up, they are detailed ansd sharp. You can see the clouds, not just a white space.
Maybe AMOLED devices arent popular in your country or they are unknown yet, its not my fault.
Lot of ppl who has amoled device are interested about the tr LCD, they will be disappointed. This is the weakest point of the N900. This is trumpery.

forget capacitive vs. resistive!!
WE HAVE AMOLED VS LCD!!!!!!!!!

Re: AMOLED or LCD

The viewing angle was also off in those youtube videos. Ie the camera was directly in front of the samsung (the optimum viewing angle) while we were looking at an angle to the n900.

Re: AMOLED or LCD

The AMOLED screens I've seen always look like they've had the saturation level set by a 12 year old with a love of vivid (read blown out) colours though. Its just garish.

I have both device, you dont need to introduce amoled here with false videos.

I could show to you tr LCD failed in direct sunlight, why dont you show us your device in direct sunlight? Is it too embarrassing to show a tanned display without colors? Why cant ppl find detailed info about N900 display over the Internet?

Re: AMOLED or LCD

I pulled out my N900 the other day in noon-day sun to check a message and take a photo (yes, i've had it over a month, but i live in Boston, it's winter, and i am inside during our few daylight hours most days :p), so i finally had a chance to see the real advantages of a transflective LCD screen. I have to say, it is a thing of beauty: it is completely visible and clear in full sun.

It is definitely a valid selling point for anyone who plans on using their screen outdoors. I will be using it as a bike computer (it's probably the first device anyone ever used to actually fit that name appropriately ;)), so this is a great thing to have verified.
