A Media player that can play almost all the codecs out there. More importantly, one that can play .mkv files.

MPlayer and KMPlayer are in Maemo-Extras-Testing - http://maemo.org/packages/view/mplayer/

Something similar to winzip/winrar/etc (Basically what I want is something that would allow the N900 to extract compressed files)

Gzip, Bzip and Zip are all available http://maemo.org/packages/search/?or...#91;value]=zip

Instant Messenger (Preferable one that can support AIM and MSN, and allows the usage of Video Calls)

Pidgin is what you are looking for. It is available in Maemo-Extras-Testing - http://maemo.org/packages/view/pidgin/

How exactly do I install those? I've been through each of those program's own individual page I can't seem to find the .install file. Also, out of all of them, which do you recommend to get?

Re: Looking for apps for the N900

Hi,
I have a question and I don't know if this is the right place for it or not.
I noticed that some apps in the repositories have "Non-free licence"
- such as many game emulators - but when I click "Install", it is downloaded normally without any request for buying any money.
So I'm confused, Can I use these apps for free or it is paid apps?
Thanks in advance.

They are free in terms of cost, you don't need to pay anything.
That license means that the source code is not free, ie you can't have the source code and see how the author did the app.

MPlayer takes 18MB in root, something to know when your space runs out :)

Really???
that is too good to be true !!!
do you mean that all apps in this website (maemo.org) are free?
if this is true, then i think that N900 is the best smartphone in terms of free apps availability, right?

There are terms "Free software", "Open source", "Freeware" and all they mean different things.
Freeware means that you don't have to pay. Nothing more.
Open source means that you have control over application. You can understand how it works, that it doesn't do something you don't want to and you can modify it if you need. Some time ago it was synonym for "Free software", but now there are companies, claiming "This is open source, but you have to pay for it and you shouldn't redistribute it" or "This is open source and this is freeware but if you use it you are my patent slave and you would have to buy (I don't insist, you may not to by, but you really don't have choice) my another app".
And there is such thing as "Free software". Read about Stallman to understand what this means.

In my work I use a lot of images. I would like to have the option of zooming into my images on the N900. Alternatively, are any alternative image viewers being ported like Quiver for the N800?
