I just browsed the issue where ossipena & co whose phones behave badly test with power settings. I have had mine for a week now and no reboots. I have tried chess, marbles and other things that are said to trigger this bug, but my N900 just works. It has the default settings, e.g.:
enable_off_mode 1
sleep_while_idel 1
clocks_off_while_idle 1
voltage_off_while_idle 1

I know nothing of the workings of the device, but as we all should have the same base software and some of the units reboot and some not, I would say that this is due to hardware issues. Faulty components, faulty soldering or some such. Something that happens occasionally on production line.
I would return my unit for a replacement.

Yes, I am also still convinced the core of this issue lies in faulty hardware. Basically, not letting device to go to "deep sleep" prevent reboots, which points out there *might* be a fault in hardware component that is responsible for that. Of course, that is just my speculation, but generally we are getting quite close to narrow this problem down, however on the other hand it doesn't mean for sure if that's hard- or software issue yet. My bet is on hardware, but I might be well wrong.

In fact, I have received Returns Authorisation Number from retailer where I bought my device (MPD UK), so I can now proceed with warranty replacement, however I might hold this for another day or two in order to help out clearing this problem up.

Hi guys,

I don't know if posting this is stupid but here we go:

I bought a couple of N900 (one for me and one for my girlfriend) and Nokia gave us two additional batteries for expending 1000 pounds.

The thing is that I used the device for a couple of days without problems with the original battery. After that time I tested the free one and I got some unexpected reboots.

My girlfriend told me "It has to be the battery". I told her, that doesn't make any sense but I changed it.

After that I haven't had any more reboots. One week usage now...

Maybe it's worth to try?

that might be one reason for minority of people whose device is rebooting. but for the most concering that is no solution. so if only possible, that should also be checked if changing battery helps.

One of the comments in bugzilla suggested it didn't help... I have no spare battery to check this myself.

less random reboots occured by changing backlight time-out to 2 minutes (max) and uncheck lock screen automatically and powe saving mode in settings, so far so good for me at least. when you're done using you can manually lock it yourself using the side lock/unlock button or power button. need more time to verify if this really works though

please remember to shut down your device and turn back on (without charger) before 50 reboots has occured.

ps I love the openness of maemo bugzilla. it is a bit like eager customer service person who calls you and suggests to test x and y if device isn't working as well it should before official fixes are published.

Well,

Bought the N900 at Regent Street last Thrusday and the reboots started as soon as I switched on the device. Didn't install any software and it seemed to be random no matter what application I used.

4 days later went back to the store and asked for a replacement which they were happy to provide. Played with it at the store for about an hour and...

AMAZING!! Not a single reboot so far and believe me when I say that I did what I could to stress the device.

I think that coming from a faulty N900 this replacement made me appreciate the device even more. My advice, if you purchase the N900 in the store, get it replaced! no point on flashing the device, etc. For the rest of you, I have been told that an update is due for Dec,29th
