I've powered on my n900 (10 min) before charging it with my laptop usb port. The mic was ok.
The next charge was in my car with my 6210Nav car charger and the little adapter from the n900. The mic is ok. Third time, i've used the n900 charger and after the battery was fully charged, no mic until i power off and restart the n900. Now i'll charge my n900 with all but the original charger without mic problem. Does anyone know the usb cabling diag ? I may try to see if there is something wrong with the voltage (with my fluke multimeter). Sorry for my bad english, i'm french. |

I can now confirm that my mic work well only if i charge it with my car or my old 6210Nav charger. Not with the n900 one.
I can reproduce this problem at all time. Please, do not use the nokia n900 charger if you've just received your phone. Use the usb cable with a computer or another charger. Shadow12: thanks for the link, i will test my charger. |

Has someone filed a bug for the mic issue? Seems to be something causing it and restarting the device brings it back. I'm talking about a bug for this mic issue and not the hardware related one.

The original charger give me 4.967V. Very stable until i've connected my usb powered led light. When i connect it voltage go down (4.12V) and when i remove the light it go up to 5.89V which is to much.
The problem may appear when the battery is fully charged. I'll make other test later. If this was a bug, why does it work with other charger ? I think of a faulty charger. |

Arcangeli, is this is reliably replicable, please can you file a bug on it pronto! I can't for the life of me work out why a different charger would affect the microphone, but you might just have put your finger on the problem.
If all the people with no mic need to do is get a new charger... well you see the difference it would make! |

I can confirm same kind of of mic problem, it has happened at least once. When the bug was triggered, in all calls the voice of the N900 user was not heard, no matter how many call attempts or different phones on the other end were used. Not sure yet what triggered that bug. Rebooting helped.
A friend of mine says 5800 Express Music, which is a Symbian phone, with its latest firmware update has a similar bug, although the whole phone does not need to be restarted, just attempting the call again is enough to correct the problem. He said the firmware was withdrawn from Nokia Update service and he cannot downgrade. There has been also a situation with N900 that the phone "dropped" from the network, no call went through. Restarting the phone helped. I bet 5800 Express Music and N900 are running almost the same GSM/3G protocol stack code (isolated from Symbian and Linux) and the bug is somewhere there. |

This all sounds pretty interesting, but I also assume there could now be two types of Mic problem. Maybe software, maybe hardware.
For example, I've not been able to get my Mic working at all, and I didn't use the charger until sometime after I found the mic problem. I do hope that these theories are right and most of the issues can be solved somehow. But unless I'm doing something odd, I can't seem to restart and get it back. Even after charging with usb etc. Oh well, is just my bad luck. Glad you guys are looking into things quite deeply though. It's good to see the community come together like that. |

Does anyone know if there is a consistant work around for this at the moment. I.e. once the Mic doesn't work, (as per previous replies), is a restart usually enough to get it going again? But then a further charge potetnially causes it to stop?
I'm still trying to work out if I could be struck by this bug, or if mine is a definite hardware or other issue instead. For example, say I fully charged my n900 - would I need to run it flat and recharge with a different charger before it had the opportunity to start working correctly? Or am I just clutching at straws and hoping my Mic problem isn't as bad as it probably is? |

IMHO the charger may not be the issue, its probably a hardware fault or a software glitch. Check to see my previous post what I had experienced. For what its worth, take the battery out, restart it, make a call to you N900 from another phone. See if the mic works, now make the call from N900 to another phone. It could be a driver loading issue, but i havent started to look into it in detail. Ive read somewhere here, that bluetooth headset works fine, so you could use your phone with that for now. hope it works for you mate ! else keep a close here , im sure one of us will find out the issue soon. You always have te return and exchange option with Nokia so not to worry, just bad that you cant get to use your N900 right away ! |

When the mic isn't working launch alasamixer ( alsamixer -c0 for full view) Check and record all the settings to compare against when the mic is working. When the mic is not working try changing audio profiles either by inserting a headset or changing the profile to silent etc. See if that corrects the issue. Unless you've got an application overriding the mixer settings or something strange like that I'd start looking into my repair / replacement or return options. Brian |

My replacement N900 has arrived. Got a few days before I have to drop my old one back in the mail so will do some testing.
I can already say in my case the charger has nothing to do with the issue. I used all the accessories that came with my broken N900 on the new one without any issue. Mic works fine on the new unit. All of my audio settings / loaded drivers etc seem to be consistent on both units. Not seeing anything out of the ordinary yet. More playing tonight - now just having fun re-configuring the device. |

I expect it'll be a send for repair job, but after thinking about it, maybe it isn't so bad as at least I know this device hasn't got other faults (touch wood), and not knowing what the stocks are like, it may even be the quicker turn around! |

I purchased it from Nokia Spain online shop. I'm very disappointed, I can't believe that the quality tests from Nokia didn't test the microphone. Is there any software solution out there, or is this a hardware problem? |

I've had the intermittent mic failure problem twice now. Reboot has always fixed it. I'm always charging with the included mains charger (not usb from computer). It would be interesting to be able to duplicate it at will, but I've not had enough time to test...

Having also problems with the mic dropping out. I'm not sure but this seems to happen especially if I have been using regular headphones(no mic) with the device. Restarting brings the mic back. I'll test this better later today.

I've had the intermittent mic failure problem once I think, It could have been the other end as it was a mobile. Rebooted the phone and it was back to normal again. I think the intermittent mic problem is software related.
How is everyone getting on with there replacements? |

I've already sended my N900 to Nokia Spain Online Shop. They say I'll get the new one IN THREE WEEKS! This is a complete shame...

I'm trying to package mine up to send for repair in the UK now. Nokia informed me that a replacement would take at least 3 months! I can't see the repair going smoothly either - but there is always hope! They say the repair should take no more than 7 days - I just hope they are right and the engineers don't get overly interested in this rare device that they take it apart and it comes back with more faults than it went with!

My N900 from NokiaUSA also has a dead mic, very disappointed. They better replace it quickly or I'll have to drive to the Chicago store and throw a tantrum.
