Easy- these features are desired by the community.

thus the reason for not marketing it as a smartphone?

Better ring up Nokia then and tell them that the N900 is on their website listed under phones... sounds like marketing it as a phone to me.

Also rememebr that the N95 was marketed as a "mobile computer" like the N900 is... or maybe you're saying that's not a mobile phone either?

Agreed, so the community wants the device to act as a smartphone or at least have the same basic features as a smartphone. That's why people might be upset because they want or expect the same. Let's also remember some of the features people are talking about aren't even smart they are quite dumb and have been around for years. So it might not have been advertised as a smartphone but it has certainly been advertised as a phone, and as such people have the right to expect common functions that are standard on practically all phones in the market at the moment smart or otherwise.

As a footnote i would like to add that at no point have i ever said a bad word about the device, but what i can do is empathise with those that are a bit miffed with what they expected to be under the hood.

Are they? I have not read a confirmation from Nokia that what's missing will be in any version of Maemo 5.
The only thing I know about is portait mode browsing.

My impression was that phone-wise, it'll remain as it is and those who need a good phone are directed towards S60. Even the Maemo devices people day so, IIRC. (There is this one video interview with Ari where he keeps instisting the N900 is not Nokia's best smartphone or flagship and that S60-models are much better and will be for quite a while. Tried to find it, but couldn't. I think it was shot in Stuttgart.)

Not necessarily. It is competing for largely the same audience, so the features will be important regardless of the device class name.

they would have been better off keeping it a NIT and saying they would be beta testing phone features/3g on it or something. Just the 3g would have been great, gsm voice is stupid on a computer and i dont see why you would pay for voice when you can use voip. I work telecommunications, everything is moving IP anyway.

Personally I really like the fact that it has voice functions. I wouldn't consider keeping an extra device with me without those functionalities (just a personal preference). The phone functionalities seem to be good enough for my infrequent phone usage so I can replace my E71 with it.

Skype alone wouldn't be enough for me. Most of the people I need to contact won't be reachable through it and I won't be around fast enough data connections always to use Skype.

Exactly. In the USA, N900 sells (for now) without a two-year lock-in to some lousy provider. The trolls have most likely bought an inferior phone within the last year and are jealous of the N900 that they cannot afford due to early termination fees...

That's part of the problem. It should be competing either for the smartphone market or the MID market. Instead, it's software seems to be designed as a MID with some phone capabilities; it's hardware seems to be designed as a phone; and it's marketing "It's a phone. It's a computer." (from the Nokia USA website) seems to claim it excels at both. It doesn't and people are disappointed.
