That's exactly what I'm doing: taking the working .desktop file, editing it exactly as instructed, making sure the path is exactly right, loading it to n900 via USB into the .images file, and disconnecting (Otherwise you can't do much at all on n900).

Then I go to 'change background' and I see 'Image set - Bubbles' but the thumbnail beside is it blank. It's not finding the images. If I choose it, nothing happens as the images aren't found.

Now, I don't know what I'm doing that is different from what you're doing - cos if I knew that, I'd do it right, yes? I've pasted the path I'm using higher up the trhead, and no-one could tell me why it doesn't work. I know I'm stupid but it doesn't help just telling me that!

You're not stupid :) Could you paste your entire .desktop file? Are you absolutely sure each photo is a working jpg and exactly 800x480 pixels in size? Are you absolutely sure you don't have the same Name= in the .desktop files for two different sets?

Could you send me your four images and the .desktop file? I'll pm you with my email address. It would be interesting to see if the exact same wallpaper that fails on your device works on mine.

Ok I've tried this with 5 different .desktop files & image files & first it wouldn't change background then after editing the .desktop file it will show the Image Set - Ornament Rainbow but doesn't show any images.

Re: New N900Wallpapers site (now with 100% less ads)

make sure you have no 'leftover blanks' behind the file name of the image. i noticed when you download the desktop file from n900wallpapers there are added spaces behing the filenames, so when you copy and past that part over you get it wrong. linux is pretty hard on the syntax ;)

and make sure you use a proper editor, since windows doesnt care much about that...

Re: New N900Wallpapers site (now with 100% less ads)

Thanks mason. I was having the same problem as above (creating an apparently valid .desktop file with images in the correct place), using the .desktop from n900wallpapers but not having it work (even though it was listed). I removed the spaces from the end of the file name lines with Vim and it worked perfectly.

glad to hear i was right ;)

@code177 wouldn't it be easier to stuff the loopable wallpapers into a single zip file or something including the .desktop file? and pls fix the tailing space in it... thanks!

Re: New N900Wallpapers site (now with 100% less ads)

Hmmm one of the sets I want (bubbles) is actually png files rather than jpg. Though the star field is definitely .jpg.

I have fixed the tabs at the end of the filenames in the .desktop files :) Hopefully this will make things work out better.

Thanks for figuring this out!

(sidenote since it was asked again - I anticipate that Prismic will be a one time cost of $4.99)

Re: New N900Wallpapers site (now with 100% less ads)

The png files are working fine, i tried them allready. Reload the file again since code177 fixed it on the site.

Re: New N900Wallpapers site (now with 100% less ads)

code177, your background manager, Prismic, should be licensed and put on every device by Nokia. You should see if there's a market for such a thing. Imagine a $0.40 per device royalty would do you good with the way sales are going, far better than selling for $5 on your site. Ever thought of that? I'm working with a guy with a SoLo app that is working on such a deal, and I've learned quite a bit being involved in the process.

Re: New N900Wallpapers site (now with 100% less ads)

I noticed that if I download .desktop files on my N900 using its web browser, the corresponding image sets are not going to be listed in the change background menu.

But if I download them on my laptop and then send them over USB or BT, everything works.

The only difference between the files that I can find is that the N900's web browser encodes the .desktop files using UTF-8 (unicode text), while the firefox on my laptop uses ASCII text. (btw, the web server sends the files over as text/html)

On linux, you can check it using the 'file' command ('file blahblah.desktop'). Also, diff between the files will show an extra character at the beginning of the N900 file.

I think we may have two bugs here: one in the N900's web browser (encoding of the downloaded files) and the other in the change background utility (will not read utf-8 encoded files - it should be able to read them, right?)

Re: New N900Wallpapers site (now with 100% less ads)

When I download the 4 images and the desktop file to my N900 (from the N900 web browser and save all 5 files to the Images folder. Should that be it, will the N900 list the image set when I click "Change Background".

For some reason, when I have the above mentioned desktop file in the images folder along with all the correct images, I can click "Change Background" but then the list that should appear doesn't! Nothing happens at all!!

If I think go into the File Manager and delete the .desktop file, it works again, but obviously doesn't list the image set, I have to set each desktop manually, which is a pain!

Am I missing something or what?
Thanks for any help in advance.

That is a known bug. See https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6494

The following comments in the bug report from Jan Arne Petersen might help:

- The image files in the .desktop file need to be absolute paths currently (without the upcoming fix).

- And they should not contain trailing spaces.

Ah thanks, I did try to edit the text to use absolute path ("/home/user/MyDocs/.images/filename.jpg") but it didn't seem to work. I'll have another play around later on. For the moment I am very happy with my new "toy" :D

Hi all

I've tried many ways to get these desktop files working but they don't. They don't! tried creating one from scratch, using absolute paths as mentioned above, put all files in the images folder but it wont work. Any help would be great, I can't be changing each desktop separately it'll do my nut in!

thanks
Dex

PS. my first post from my N900!

Re: New N900Wallpapers site (now with 100% less ads)

FYI, I finally got this working but ONLY by connecting to a PC and manually renaming the file on the PC. Basically, the problem I was having was I'd have the following file name in the right place with absolute paths, etc but it wouldn't work.

"filename.desktop"

It seems that it should be ".filename.desktop" (notice the period at the start of the file name). Annoyingly, when I tried to rename the download from N900Wallpapers, the device wouldn't let me, saying that I couldn't name a file beginning with ".", I also received this message when trying to rename the file in File Manager.

Presumably, the file could be renamed with root access in X-Term, but I wouldn't have the first clue how to do that! So had to do it on my PC!

Hope this helps someone else.

On your N900:
1. Ctrl-shift-x to open terminal
2. cd MyDocs
3. cd .images
4. mv filename.desktop .filename.desktop

cd means "change directory". You find yourself in the directory /home/user when you start the terminal, so you need to enter MyDocs/.images.

mv means "move". You don't rename files in unix, your move them to a new name in the same directory.

@Dexter1759 since these files are located in the usr home you don't need root access for that!

The guide I looked at on youtube said that all images & desktop file went in the images folder.

Not sure about root access, but when connected to my pc I could simply navigate & change the file name.

Guys,

Anyone know what image formats are supported, just messing around with some animated GIFs for a friend and it occured to me, animated backgrounds would be cool!

Haven't got the device yet, but I can make some quick test examples if someone can test them for me?

Hi Dave,
If you want to throw a couple of animated files my way, Mo would be happy to test them out. And if you're thinking what I think you're thinking.... waaay cool!

GIFs don't work on the N900 (at least in the image viewer). I think they might just show a static image if you try. You can open them in a browser and they'll work.

Hey K,

When I get a sec today I'll send you some. As Laughing Man has said below it looks like it won't work but we might as well have a go :D

Making some headway with your holiday background too.... shouldn't be long till I have a half decent image :D

Here also are some desktop wallpapers you could resize (excluding the Windows 7 and Mac ones).

It is not the browser but the Notes app. It even errors out when I try to save the .desktop files. I edited the files using vim and it worked.

Hi All,

Hope I'm ok to post this here. Had bit of a surge this morning and threw together these two wallpapers. I know they aren't great, my photoshop skills are getting a little better though.

I've uploaded them to the n900wallpapers site, they just need approving.

Any constructive feed back would be appreciated.

Top gear inspired:

Dexter inspired:

Also, the site is looking great now, but when browsing on my N900, it still misses of a bit to the left as someone mentioned previously.

I'll sort out a screenshot if needed.

Thanks,
Dex

Re: New N900Wallpapers site (now with 100% less ads)

what exactly are .desktop-files?
when i click on .desktop to download from the websites, it asks me to save a .htm-file.

/edit:
ok, just saw that the .htm-file propably is supposed to be named .desktop.
after seeing whats inside, i understand what it does.

i guess all the 4 referenced wallpaper in the .desktop-file have to be in the same folder that the .desktop-file is?

I think that depends on how the creator of the .desktop file referenced the image files.

Quote:

[Desktop Entry]
Type=Background Image
Name=Vintage Wallpaper
Hidden=True

X-File1=/home/user/MyDocs/.images/vintage_01.png
X-File2=/home/user/MyDocs/.images/vintage_02.png
X-File3=/home/user/MyDocs/.images/vintage_03.png
X-File4=/home/user/MyDocs/.images/vintage_04.png
X-Order=01
this is a example of my own wallpapers I made and it is referenced all image files with an absolute path.

so I could have copied them to /home/user/MyDocs/.documents and referenced them like this:

Quote:

X-File1=/home/user/MyDocs/.documents/vintage_01.png
...
in the .desktop file you'd still be able to see them.

What does "Sync" do on n900wallpapers ? Also, I downloaded all the pics and .desktop file from the website and put them in pictures folder. When I tried applying the wallpaper, I was unable to edit the desktop (from menu) and was only able to do so after deleting .desktop file. Any suggestion ?

Theres some thing wrong with the desktop files. When downloading them there saved as desktop files and not .desktop files. Also when downloading the wallpapers and desktop files and placing them in the .images folder you cannot change the desktop files. When clicking on the change background it crashes out and then all my icons dissapear and my widgets get deleted..

Don't know if this is a PR1.1 thing or not but the .desktop files I download from N900 Wallpapers work fine now. I just download the images, and desktop to my images folder and hey presto, they just work.

I know this has been mentioned before, but I still have a problem with the site navigation missing the first letter all the way down the left.

Anyone else get this?

Yeah the .desktop files seem to be including the full path to the images now. You had to add it manually a couple weeks ago when I first tried it.

I couldn't figure out the .desktop thing either. But I just used "Save Wallpapers" and manually changed each.
