[Maemo 5] SGT Puzzle Collection (was do you want maintain port of puzzle collection)

There are collection of small puzzle games:
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/puzzles/

They compiled without any changes for N900. Only one of 27 games needs two button mouse, all are very playable. Some uses keyboard, which might be better to implement some other way.

In this page, there are FreeRunner port, which uses launcher, so it doesn't add 27 new icons to application menu:
http://om.edorfaus.info/sgt-puzzles/

So, who wants make and maintain this port?

Hmm, I'm sure I had these installed on my n810 a while ago. Is it possible that someone is already doing this?

I've now uploaded sgt-puzzles for maemo5 extras-devel:

http://maemo.org/packages/view/sgt-puzzles/

It includes a new python-hildon based launcher:

http://afflict.kos.to/Screenshot-20100104-212649.png

Yeah, that is rubberband scrolling icon grid - if just the main grid would allow submenus, the whole excersize would be unnecessary.

Still needs:

1) An icon for the application manager
2) Tune some of the games to be more touch friendly (one game needs right mouse button click, entering numbers in the sudoku is tricky..)
3) Tune the launcher (those grey background areas are ugly..)
4) Perhaps port the launcher to C - just installing python for the launcher might be a bit too much.

Oh, and for some real commitment, a graphics designer to improve the graphics of the puzzles would really be needed!

Ehh grahpics are fine... same as anywhere else ;)

As for needing the right buttn... maybe check the pilot port of them. I'm not sure but it was either a long press or just switched between states.

Second upload done, now promoted to extras-testing:

http://maemo.org/packages/package_in.../8605-1maemo2/

Now, the following controls have been implemented:

right mouse = control + click
middle mouse = shift + click

Slightly suboptimal, especially if playing with stylus.

Test it and if you like it thumb it up :)

Hmm considered using the proximity sensor?

Anyway thanks for this. Can't wait to try it.

As soon as it stops doing un-attended apt updates upon connection establish.

New release in extras-testing, try and thumb up:

http://maemo.org/packages/package_in.../8605-1maemo3/

Changes to the previous one:

- bugracker url added
- "random seed" entry hang fixed
- non-functional included help menu item removed.

For help, click on the manual links at:

http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/puzzles/

Note that for our port:

right mouse = control + click
middle mouse = shift + click

Numbers can be entered with the usual blue-arrow + number on the keypad.

Here's information on the Extras-Testing repo. Testers should make sure the package meets the criteria in the QA Checklist. You can find the testing report page for it here.

In other words, don't just "try it and thumbs up." Extras-testing isn't a popularity contest, it's a quality control mechanism.

Quick suggestion about numbers: any reason to not just map the qwertyiop row to numbers as well and save an awkward combination?

Is there a way to implement a help function or to save the puzzle manuals locally on the N900? I don't know most of these games so it would help to have some instructions...

Instructions are available online:

http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/puzzles/

You can save them locally using the N900 browsers "save page as.." button.

Certainly my comment meant to encourage people to blindly thumb up. It was simply a call for testing (which seems to be hard to get).

I'm making (perhaps optimistic) assumption that people who try it won't thumb it up if it is of poor quality? :)

I hear you on it being hard to get testers.

The problem with that assumption is that the criteria for quality of many games forum readers has no overlap with the testing QA checklist.

I don't think the current testing process is ideal but i do try to encourage people to follow it and advocate improvement, rather than bypassing it (not saying that was your intent).

This isn't really on topic for the thread so consider it a free bump for visibility. ;)

One more vote to extras ;)

I'm already working on the next version, which should feature at least a few new games from upstream and better number input.

Re: [Maemo 5] SGT Puzzle Collection

New version in testing again:

http://maemo.org/packages/package_in.../8853-1maemo1/

Changes to the previous version:

* Number buttons onscreen for games that need numbers
* Some other improvements for stylus playing
* New games: keen, magnets, singles, towers
* Icons optified too

Screenshot showing new number buttons in solo (sudoku)

http://afflict.kos.to/sc2.png

TODO:
- include docs
- move numbers from top to a numberpad in right.
- hildonize further: fullscreen, rotate
- add buttons for left/middle/right button selection

No promises that I'll have time for those anytime near. Alternative is that I ditch the gtk interface and start by creating a Qt interface from scratch.

Well I haven't managed to see a single puzzle icon so far so just went and generated the relevant .desktop files.

The icon is "puzzles" which starts a launcher. This is to avoid flooding the extra apps menu with icons. If you want to find desktop files added by a package, one can from the command line:

Code:

~ $ dpkg -L sgt-puzzles|grep desktop
/usr/share/applications/hildon/sgt-puzzles.desktop
~ $ cat /usr/share/applications/hildon/sgt-puzzles.desktop
[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Terminal=false
Exec=/opt/sgt-puzzles/sgt-launcher
Icon=netgame
Type=Application
Categories=Game;LogicGame;
Name=Puzzles

Let me clarify... It doesn't LIST any puzzles under the Puzzles launcher.

Looking at your wiki.maemo.org page I see you have customized your phone aggressively. I can see how the repartitioning can confuse the launcher python script into thinking that the game symlinks do not belong to puzzles.

I think you are probably technical competent enough to create a patch for the sgt-launcher that works regardless of where opt points to ;)

Re: [Maemo 5] SGT Puzzle Collection (was do you want maintain port of puzzle collection)

Ehh I prefere the direct shortcuts anyway :) Makes it easy to put my fav one on the desktop :)

And don't assume to much :)

I dislike python so it won't happen. Shouldn't it just grab the list in /usr/games from dpkg -L sgt-puzzles though.

Anyway thanks for figuring that out. Hope it'll help other people that might have issues.

Fair point. Being able to add shortcuts to desktop is something I need to to add to the TODO.

Still lacks hildonised menus and getting rid of that gtk menu to save some screen space so that the playing area could be bigger. Having a fullscreen option that hides everything but the playing area would be nice as well.
