So do you tape that picture on the back of your tablet or something? ;)

Chris, I think it would be best if there was an advanced mode in the file browser that will show you the files... but I still don't really like it running as root (as I would imagine it would have to if you want to do anything with the files instead of just reading them). I find that kind of dangerous and irresponsible in a Linux distro and kills the security advantage.

Like a red pill mode as mentioned earlier in the thread.

I have learned that it really is a feature, not a bug, to hide system/admin data from the typical user of a "file browser".

I too use emelFM2 all the time (n800), very convenient to see all the files/directories. I have a shortcot in Personal Launcher. The dual pane view is much easier to move files around than the default file manager.

I even have a shortcut in Personal Menu setup to run it as (gasp) root. I guess I'm very lucky that a hacker hasn't swooped in and hijacked my sytem during one of those brief sessions, nor has my tablet burst into flames or been bricked!

Sure it's not the best idea, but it is occasionally needed, and it's nice to know it's there. I look forward to seeing it on my n900 (provided it ever ships).

Didn't fit. Had to tattoo it on my girlfriend's back. Which works out well since I'm usually using my N800 in bed. But she does get comments at the gym.

Isn't Midnight Commander available for Fremantle? I thought I saw it somewhere on a video. Could be an alternative till something pops up with a GUI.

Bump, since no-one answered. I'd try myself, but my future N900 is still in Nora's cupboard, so I'm asking you people of good will.
Is emelfm2 from maemo4 repos working on the n900? Or the perversity of the new widget libraries prevents its use?
Come on, just download it and dpkg -i... Qole? :)

yes.

wasn't the maemo work in progress?

and training wheels... this is ridiculous. so you mean that if you have a 400bhp car, you dont need to install seatbelts because if you drive 300km/h to the concrete wall, you die anyway. or what are you trying to say?

Just use Midnight Commander. With half-a-screen virtual keyboard gone and the physical keyboard finally usable, it is way more convenient on N900 than it was on N8x0.

Actually, if you point your browser at

file:///

you won't need to type further.. Just use it like a file manager in readonly mode and click on stuff you want to look at. There's even a "show hidden stuff" option which ... defaults to ON !

You could even bookmark it and put it on your desktop..

It's a pretty good suggestion, imho. If you want to more specifically look in user's home directory, do the same for file:///home/user/

After hearing it showed all files, gave it a try, and I have to say its highly workable. Thanks kwotski and SHANEZLAR. I almost missed a gem. this'll work until a full solution arrives.
