I do not think "we" need emelfm2. It is notoriously quirky and running it on even smaller screen will not make it better. If I understand correctly, nobody here can make himself use Midnight Commander? If that is the case, "we" may just need a new file manager instead. May I suggest porting ROX Filer again, this time porting it well? Here is the homepage:

I am sure a lot of the new users can manage Midnight Commander, and I have no issue with regard to using a non "frementalized" application utilizing the stylus for navigation. An optimized version is always welcome. But having a quick alternative for the time being is necessary as well.

Midnight Commander is a console application, and thus does not require fremantlization. Also, it does support the stylus for navigation, as XTerm will convert stylus clicks to mouse clicks.

Yes I am aware that MC is console based and doesn't require fremantalizing. I was talking about emelfm2 not being fremantalized yet, as in not optimized for the fremantle GUI guidelines (Hildon 2.2).

Emelfm2 is impossible to use on the tablet, whether it is fremantalized or not. It simply requires more screen estate than the tablet makes available. This (and the UI craziness) has long been a problem with Emelfm2 on N8x0, and N900 uses even smaller screen.

Maybe one of the file managers Thunar or PCManFM may be good to be ported.. Respectively file managers of XFCE and LXDE, they look to have a clean interface (not too busy with too many icons and parts), and are light.
They're both GTK anyway, maybe something in QT is better for future compatibility?
Just as a suggestion anyway, I cannot help, and my knowledge is very limited. :D

Just disagreeing. It is not "impossible to use on the tablet." Apparently not all NIT users are fans of emelFM2, but some of us are.

Ok, look at using emelfm2 on the N900 like this... I never use it in fullscreen mode on my N810, therefore, using it in fullscreen on the N900 would make it approximately the same size as using it now, non fullscreen

Yes, you can use it by squinting at the screen, using stylus to click buttons or scroll through a tiny list showing you 3-5 filenames at a time. But...why? Especially when there are saner alternatives...

Like SSH and an SFTP client. ;)
