They really really shouldnt do that.. they will loose me as a customer. This was always already something that annoyed me greatly for S60... Why isnt it there possible to upgrade to another Feature Pack??

My little brother has a winmob and he is upgrading to all the latest builds of winmob, thats just what i expect to be able to do.
Also android does its job in this area.

is there any official announcement from Nokia that we can upgrade N900 to maemo 6 and are you sure that we will be able to run applications and games of Maemo 6 on N900 with maemo 5 ?

AFAIK, no on both counts. We should know more when the full SDK is available.

According to Peter@Maemo Marketing, "Maemo 6 alpha SDK in q1 2010, beta in Q2 2010."

Even my old e61i got updated until few months ago when I decided to stop checking.

Nokia, differently than Apple, actually release their OS updates for free. And also, differently than Apple, lets say that for some weird reason they would not release it to n900. You can actually use your device with the port, as the up post mentioned. Not all companies let you have their new OS for free(Apple, MS anyone?!)

And they are thinking about this possibility of porting or not... Believe me.

One thing bud, I got my Windows Xp Pro 32bit SP2 and SP3, Windows Vista Business and Vista Business SP1, Windows 7 Pro 32Bit and 64bit Free from Microsoft.
All genuine full version windows. And I'm using it right now. ALL FREE.. Except my Office 2007.
I dont even need to download the crack hacked edition of Windows for my computers. All just offered to me free of charge by Microsoft

So just want to Proof you're wrong on that at some point lol.

My colleague at work got his phone nearly 3years ago and still got winMob 6.2 on it lol.. Beat that. Duno what brand he using but it is not HTC, Black touch screen thing. Very small.

Sorry n900 fanboys, but this has happened before. I'd put money that this happens in this order with these details.

1.n900 never hits stores besides the nokia store
2.n900 never hits mainstream
3.Maemo 5 gets a "chinook to diablo" type upgrade and maemo claims that this is the 2nd os for the n900
4.N1000 or N millennium comes out in december of 2010 as nokia's flagship device.
5.N millennium is mainstream and because it is STEP 5 OF 5.

I'd love to be proven wrong but I don't think I will be. I think the N900 will end up with a more stable OS but it will be Maemo 5. It will end up with a more expansive suite of possible applications but their development will taper off as well.
You may want to look at Nokia's plan to have QT cross compatibilty in Maemo 5, 6, and Symbian. I believe Nokia's intent is to make whatever OS you run, you can still use old and new applications as long as they are coded in QT.

The only A9 cortex that's been announced is the OMAP4 and that still, correct me if I'm wrong, hasn't taped out yet. It's been delayed and TI announced back in July if yields are good, they hope to have volume shipping by 2H2010. Given the amount of time required to develop a device, this means that we may not see a OMAP4 handset until 2011, and the first one for all we know could be an iphone (not that there is anything wrong with that). The next generation beyond snapdragon and omap3 could be further than you think. Other hardware changes could prevent backward compatibility with the n900; all that's needed is an unsupported driver. I would think that it would be in Nokia's best interest to use the n900 as a testbed for maemo6 so the OS is mature by the time they launch the new platform, rather than launch a novel OS on novel hardware.

Fate of the N900: After Nokia's financial community day yesterday, Nokia's shares are down ~2.7%. Analysts say that the only saving grace will be the "advanced telephones" and that this is not discounted in the current share price. One interpretation of this is that the financial community either doesn't understand or doesn't believe in Nokia's "advanced phones" strategy, or that they want to see some hard facts how the units are selling.

I am new to Nokia as I have been using Blackberrys on T-Mobile in the USA with local SIM cards when traveling in Europe. Now I am considering the N900 as it's specs sound ideal for my needs.

But this discussion thread re: the OS obsolescence potential has dampened my enthusiasm. What is Nokia's track record re: updating OS, OS support and introduction of replacement products ie N901 N902 N1000 if you get my drift.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.
