This is great! Thank you! I don't know much about python but it is a scripting language, right? If so, can people develop python apps on the N900 itself, like typing in the actual python code to some editor and save it to the device, completely bypassing the scratchbox-on-pc method? If so, I would be interested in playing with this technology as the other alternatives are just too cumbersome.

That is exactly what you can do with Python. :D

Yes, and the code editor in question is called pyGTKeditor, itself written in Python, optimised for Python code (syntax highlight etc.)... and installing it on your N900 also installs Python if it's not already there. Ain't life great ? :-)

Send me a PM with your Google Wave account or, if you don't have one, with your email account so that we can send you an invite to Google Wave.

I tried sending PM both in IE6 and IE8, and it just won't send it. Sorry I don't have (can't have FireFox) on these two machines I have access to. I'll try it from home later.

i did get your PMs and responded to them. I also submitted the email address that you sent me to Google so that they send you a Google Wave account. Let me know when you get it so that I can add you to our wave. :)

This sounds like a wonderful idea! I've dabbled in python once, but I would love to have an extensive grasp on it. My wave is rememberwhatever@googlewave.com

Also, I have a bunch of wave invites sitting around. Private message me if anyone wants one :)

I've always been interested in python, but never taken the time to learn it, and think this is a great idea :) I'd like to join the wave (kent.hambrock@googlewave.com) and if anyone needs a wave invite, I have 3 I can spare(just PM me) :)

Read the wave. A nice intro for Python programming, pretty complete. You put a bunch of effort into that. I'm looking forward to your discussions on qt and gtk and n900 specifics.

I also started looking at the gpodder, maybe that has some interesting starting points.

Re: Python for Newbies on Maemo - Google Wave

Just found this thread, and while I haven't read all the posts, it seems like a very interesting project and I'd like to try it out. I'm fairly confident in Java, but I've just decided to cross over to Python and the N900, so I'd love to check out the book. I've got Wave: karl.martensson@googlewave.com, and if anyone needs invites, then I've got like 18 of those laying around as well, which I'm more than willing to share.

Re: Python for Newbies on Maemo - Google Wave

Guys, sorry for the delay. I am in transit right now (without an N900 yet :P). I will add everyone interested in a about 1 hour.

I see that the wave is really getting out of hand now. Most people so far just want to read it. I have had no contributions to the missing sections so far. So, I think I am going to post what is there right now on themaemo.com. I guess the wave can remain active, in case any one wants to contribute to it. I'll post the link to the web page here shortly.

Thanks for your patience. Here is a link to the tutorial:

http://www.themaemo.com/python-for-newbies/

I divided it in two parts due to its length. Second part is coming soon.

First go to the link I just posted and read the content. If you find that you have something to contribute, let me know and I will add you to the wave. ;)

If you are a "noob" you don't need an invite. Just go here and have at it. ;)

Don't know how much I'm able to contribute, but I do know what are the dark areas when starting development. I added few sub-sections under Qt, i.e. full screen applications and Hildon widgets.

Please do not litter the wave with new subsections, unless you volunteer to write them. If you just want to propose something, you can do so here.

Re: Python for Newbies on Maemo - Google Wave

Hi,

Now I've got my N900 complete with PyGTKEditor, I plan on learning a bit of Python to create my own apps/widgets.

Am I safe to assume that I can do all the stuff I need to (for Widgets/Apps) with PyGTKEditor? Including the PyQT stuff (when your Wave includes it)?

Many thanks,
Dex

Re: Python for Newbies on Maemo - Google Wave

The editor is just a way to write and run code, of course it'll be enough.
However, you may need additional libraries in order to do some things in Python (you have to install PyQT for instance - If I remember well).
