Re: Accelerometer game proposal: sheepdog
quick question is this a real screenshot of the game so far?
http://my-maemo.com/grafika/sheep.jpg If so looks like fun :-) |
Re: Accelerometer game proposal: sheepdog
can someone help me convert my wav files to mp3's?
I use this one app but it speeded the files up way to fast , so the sounds were terrible, I'd be happy to send them to one of you if you could supply me with Mp3's to put on my site? |
Re: Accelerometer game proposal: sheepdog
awesome :-)
my sheep sounds are upload onto my website http://tinyurl.com/ylyjbqv So you can head over and listen to them directly or you can download them from there as well :-0 let me know if you want something slightly loader deep highier etc :-) he he he P.S don't laugh too much |
Re: Accelerometer game proposal: sheepdog
Waoh, really impressive! Some of the sounds sound like animals!
Great work! |
Re: Accelerometer game proposal: sheepdog
Posted this in the 'designer thread' but it probably belongs here:
A flock of sheep are romping in a field, happily going "baa baa" to each other and discussing life as usual when suddenly they hear a "moo mooooooooooooooooooo!" They look around and see only sheep. They carry on playing as before. "Moooooo mooooooooooo mmmoo!" One sheep can hear it all too clearly next to him. He shuffles away a little from his friend, a worried look on his face, and then asks, "Georgie, why are you mooing? You're a sheep. Sheep go 'baa'!" His friend replies gladly, "I know. I thought I would learn a foreign language!" Brilliant sounds! Hope Hopbeat can incorporate a few of them when he gets back from skiing. I am seriously impressed. Mind, I'd stay away from vets with thermometers if I were you. :p (Actually, I've hand -delivered lambs... which doesn't bear thinking about) Edit - hope you don't mind - I tweeted your website! |
Re: Accelerometer game proposal: sheepdog
That is an awesome pros above :-)
Thanks for the compliments on the sounds. I had my whole house almost peeing in there pants last night listening to the sounds he he he I really hope they get used :-) |
Re: Accelerometer game proposal: sheepdog
stobbsc: I have tears in my eyes from desperately suppressing my laughter when listening to your sheep sounds at work.
|
Re: Accelerometer game proposal: sheepdog
qole, I'm glad you liked them. Lets hope Hopbeat likes them too
|

Re: Accelerometer game proposal: sheepdog
Welcome back! Hope the skiing was good and you still have two working legs and no crutches.
The sheep missed you. You can hear them baaing! |
Re: Accelerometer game proposal: sheepdog
Hello,
I'm happy to say that in a few minutes sheep 0.0.2-3 will appear in extras-devel. The whole thing is basically rewritten from scratch, although the basic mechanics remained the same. The most notable changes are:
The controls is the same as in previous versions. Upon application startup, the accelerometer is calibrated and then the dog is moved by tilting the phone. When screen is touched, a juicy grass attracting sheep is created, it fades out after a moment. In order to open the closed pens, you need to place at least one sheep on the blue square. This is the basic and initial support for logics elements, that is the direction I would like the game to go. There are three icons at the top, play/pause, sound on/off and exit. To toggle them, you just move them to the bottom part of the screen (deactivate) or to the top part (activate). I find it nicer to do than just tapping :) You need to herd three sheep, one per each fence to win. When you do, you can provide your twitter username and password and click ok, which will update your status to something like 'I just scored 774 points in #Sheep' (the points are 1000 minus your time). The username and password are not saved or sent anywhere (everyone is welcomed to check this in the source code), which also means that you need to provide it every time you want to update your status. The twitter part uses twitcurl library and is there mostly because I wanted to learn this anyway :) The icons are the ones provided in this thread by @mivoligo. The sounds are from @stobbsc from this thread, the background meadow sounds are from freesounds.org, which is OK for the non-commercial use. Now problems:
The package is quite large atm, dues to sound files. I will take a while to compress them a little bit more. Plans for the future: get rid of those bugs stated above and any others you can discover, add support for levels logic and make at least 3 levels, polish some rough edges. Then I guess the game will be ready for extra-testing. Will it ever make any further depends on this wonderful community :) Baaaaah! [edit] Sorry for this longish post, and a game screenshot: http://www.student.dtu.dk/~s081608/S...130-105514.png [edit2] Almost forgot about the most important thing: Please, any feedback is appreciated :) |
Re: Accelerometer game proposal: sheepdog
Looks wonderful!!! I shall rush to d/l it... though do I need anything first for Qt4.6? I thought PR1.1 was still on Qt4.5? Or does the game come with all it needs?
(Great forward planning btw, 4.6 will mean any accelerometer device from the range, inc symbian eventually!) |
Re: Accelerometer game proposal: sheepdog
@RevdKathy, thanks for reminding me.
Qt 4.6 requires packages from libqt4-maemo5 series. I have put the dependencies there, I'm not 100% sure if everything is there though (I need to buy second n900 to test such things). So if you have any problems installing or running the game, please let me know. I have chosen Qt 4.6 because it has some nice graphic features and I felt like trying it (yes, sheep is my testing ground :) |
Re: Accelerometer game proposal: sheepdog
Ok, is it all arrived?
I'll go get it now. :) |
Re: Accelerometer game proposal: sheepdog
this awesome. just played my first game and tweeted 890 :)
thanks for using my sounds made me laugh this morning. ok so feedback time: -Could we make the password text * or something so when people around me they don't see. -Would it be possible to change the tweet tag to some unquie like maybe #maemosheep -The buttons at the top left seem to move when i press them? Is this how it's supposed to work? otherwise all is good so far. will play and test more later. also i love the little dog |
Re: Accelerometer game proposal: sheepdog
@stobbsc, thanks.
About the password: I'll make when I figure out how to fix first letter capitalization (either the nice way or I'll hack it). Right now it would be too confusing. I think I will also add a feature to save the credentials. Yes, I didn't know what name we will decide upon, so I just put there anything :) 'There are three icons at the top, play/pause, sound on/off and exit. To toggle them, you just move them to the bottom part of the screen (deactivate) or to the top part (activate). I find it nicer to do than just tapping ' |
Re: Accelerometer game proposal: sheepdog
From what I've seen on Youtube, Qt 4.6 is well worth the effort - it seems to produce some serious 3d graphic effects and be a good upgrade. Besides, this game is going to be so popular it will be demanded on all platforms. People would refuse to upgrade to maemo6 if they couldn't have sheep.:p
Is't in extrasp-devel yet - nothing other than 'sheep-drawing'. I'll keep checking! Edit: first stupidity - it's in upgrades, not the untried list. :p |
Re: Accelerometer game proposal: sheepdog
thanks for up. cool idea for toggling the buttons nice little touch i like it
|
Re: Accelerometer game proposal: sheepdog
Looks great. Though, I think using twitter as a highscore is kinda unnecessary for the final product. Seems to just waste storage...having a normal high-score system seems more ideal. Nevertheless, I look forward for more updates =D
|
Re: Accelerometer game proposal: sheepdog
I got the dog stuck in the pen!!!
And do I have to keep one sheep on the blue spot just to have the pens open? I fear I shall never achieve it. No doggy biscuits for me. :( Still, people who're good at that sort of thing seem to be doing ok, which is what matters. I quite like the twitter integration: some of the people I follow often tweet their game status. And it's all more advertising. ) |
Re: Accelerometer game proposal: sheepdog
Thanks for update hopbeat. And putting my icons in it. ;)
Feedback: - I never thought about moving icons to the bottom of the screen, I was thinking that it's something wrong with them and they don't work. Maybe would be better if some hint appear when you touch icons, highlighted rectangle at the bottom with text in it: "move here", or something. - sound is great :D |
Re: Accelerometer game proposal: sheepdog
the problem with a normal highscore is how do compare against others.
had my first crash while moving through bushes haven.t been able to reproduce. also i noticed that when you win at first the lets YO come up at the bottom right before it says YOU WIN at the top |
Re: Accelerometer game proposal: sheepdog
The twitter thing is an open matter, but let's be frank, it is a nice and simple way to advertise the game (and maemo platform if tag #maemo is added).
@mivoligo, thanks, I will add transparent green and red stripes at the bottom and at the top to indicate that those are active zones. @stobbsc, yes, the crashes are related to the bushes, I have a race condition somewhere there. I'll work on it. @RevdKathy, yes the dog may got stuck if it actually enters the pen. Please let me know, how do you see the difficulty of the game (controls versus tasks required). [edit] I'm glad that apparently the game installs without problems :) |
Re: Accelerometer game proposal: sheepdog
I managed to get a sheep into a closed pen through the fence, which meant I couldn't get hi out again, but neither did he count as penned properly, so a sort of stalemate. I'm guessing that wasn't intended.
It's addictive, though! |
Re: Accelerometer game proposal: sheepdog
Installed: Fine and cleanly
Loaded: fine and cleanly (white screen between open and start?) Sounds: great Icons: all ace - though no actual game icon yet? Accelerometer response: great Aim and tasks - good apart from a few comlexities... the dog getting stuck, or a sheep managing to 'jump' a fence and get penned without getting counted. I'm supposed to be working, so I'll stop here. But is is awfully good. :D (Done it! 214 is hardly a good score, but damnit I'm proud!!!) |
Re: Accelerometer game proposal: sheepdog
very addictive this game is he he he...
difficulty is cool at the. the blue square action spices things up again. so far i like alot |
Re: Accelerometer game proposal: sheepdog
The icon should be there, if the cache is not refreshed, it will appear after reboot.
|

BTW, I checked rootfs, and don't seem to have lost much at all, if anything. From which I deduce (in my ignorance) that it's optified, and the Qt4.6 libraries likewise. Got the icon. Though also crashed out of the game. I suspect M Mo knows I should be working. ;) |
Re: Accelerometer game proposal: sheepdog
One more thing. I have Catorise installed and Sheep is under System not Games.
|
Re: Accelerometer game proposal: sheepdog
@mivoligo, strange, the control file has system/games and that's where the app appears in the application manager so it should be the same here.
[edit] catorise seem to be a bit messy, for example it doesn't detect type of angry birds. I will check what needs to be edited to make it work [edit2] ok, I can see what it requires. This will be fixed in the upcoming bug-fix release :) |

I cant get it! I dont know what things are using these packages though so dont want to apt-get remove. |
Re: Accelerometer game proposal: sheepdog
@finlaybob, the problem may be with the versions of those two modules (4.6.0 instead of 4.6.2~git20100128-0maemo1). You may try to apg-get upgrade to have those pushed up.
|
Re: Accelerometer game proposal: sheepdog
sheep 0.0.2-5 update will be soon there.
Segmentation faults (crashes) should be fixed now. If it happens again please let me know. Added color strips when moving icons, logic should be more clear now. Application should be now correctly categorized with catorise. Also, if your dog gets stuck inside the fence, you can get him out, strongly turning the phone in the right direction. It will take him a while, but it should eventually break free :) I will fix this behavior when I get to fixing collision system. |

Re: Accelerometer game proposal: sheepdog
@TNiga, yes, it's user/games of course, I misspelled it here. The issue was the desktop file which is corrected now.
|
Re: Accelerometer game proposal: sheepdog
Just updated Sheep and it still appear under System. Maybe it's something wrong with Catorise?
