Nokia N900 + HAVA

Hi,

Is there a way to get the current Hava Player available to download to work on the N900?

Thanks,

What is Hava Player? Is that hardware, or software?
If software, which platforms is it available for?
Note that the N900 is a Linux device on ARMEL hardware - you'll probably need those two bits to find out.

Hi Andre,

Hava is client software that connects to a set top box in your home via your network or the internet. Its software worked on previous Nokia tablets but doesn't currently work on the N900 just by installing the file.

Thanks,

I'm very interested in this as well. I'm surprised there hasn't been more talk about it with the advent of 3G in the tablet devices. I personally use SlingBox but if HAVA ends up porting over to Maemo 5 and the N900 I will definitely be getting a box. Having SlingBox is fantastic, having it on my tablet would be even more so.

Has anyone tried contacting HAVA to ask about compatibility of plans for a new software release? Seems like they tend to cater to the tablet folks so I would assume one is in the works...

I would be interested to find out what Hava says. I e-mailed them to ask them about Android when I was using my G1. Her was their reply:

"Dear Customer,

As of now we do not have any Mobile Client for Android Platform. It depends on the market demand of these phones to design and develop a compatible Client software. This Phone is in its initial phase. We cannot start a project until it is found reliable and demanding.

A link to a lame article. Not quite the response I was looking/hoping for.

Well, it requires the Hildon Help framework which was dropped in Maemo 5. If you can defeat that requirement it should work OK.

I emailed Hava months ago about whether they plan on updating for Maemo 5 and outlining the current issues but never got a reply. I guess somebody else could try pinging them again.

This is what HAVA said about Maemo 5. Kind of suprised. I got a HAVA thinking they would update their software for the newest Internet Tablet.

"It may be supported in future"

Well, I attempted to work around this requirement by firing up my old n810 and copying the libraries to my n900, and while it did indeed start up, and appeared to successfully connect to my HAVA (I was getting bitrate reports in the window title as per normal use), the video area only ever showed the "Buffering..." text and there was no audio. Remote control works just fine... but no audio or video. Very very strange. And extremely frustrating!

However, this does allow me to sort of use the HAVA. It doesn't work from remote spots, but with KMPlayer (using the osso-media-server backend and with Extra Codecs installed, altho I don't know if that last is necessary), I can point to rtsp://[Hava IP address] and get the video stream. And if I want to change channels, I stop, connect with the HAVA player, and use the remote on it, then disconnect and reconnect with KMPlayer. Very ugly, and I can't seem to do sufficient port forwarding to get it to work outside of the LAN... but it sort of functions.
