Are you sure it a touch screen sound? By default, the vibrator will also activate upon every screen touch for haptic feedback. You can disable that under Settings -> Display -> Touch Screen Vibration.

try rebooting. I had the same problem till I rebooted...

I really don't see the point of haptics. A pointless noise and a waste of the battery!

It's actually not using much battery at all. The difference between haptics and sound on/off for touchscreen taps battery-wise is negligible.

How ironic. I didn't have this issue when I first got my N900, but after I did a firmware reset, the sounds and vibrate wouldn't turn off no matter what I did.
