Turn off or silence the screen tap / click sound?

Hi,

i just got my N900 (yay!) (and yes, my mic is working) but I have one thing that annoys me - it makes a 'click' sound everytime I touch the display. In the display options you can disable the vibration thingie, but the click sound stays. You could also mute the complete device, but that's not really the same. How can I disable the click-sound?

Re: N900 'click sound'

It's in the Settings > Profiles > Touch screen sounds. In other words the bottom setting in the profiles submenu/window. Hope that helps. :)

You have to be quick to spot that disappearing scrollbar. :)

You are going to find many more hidden bonuses. Try double clicking on text messages in chat to see time, when the were delivered and posted.
Interfase is sometimes non intuiteve, but if you know the trick you would like it.

I've done that and I'm still getting the click sound... Is anyone else running into this problem?

Re: N900 'click sound'

Get a terminal prompt.
Type the following:
Code:

killall maemo-xinput-sounds
Tell me if that fixes it! (I think this might be a bug)

Re: N900 'click sound'

That worked, thanks!

Uh oh. I was hoping you'd say it didn't.

That means someone (...ugh I know, I know...) should file a bug about this...

Haha ha, qole. You walked right into that one. Its for the betterment of us all. You are appreciated, bro...

FYI, more info for you, the click returned when I restarted the phone - the same terminal command killed it. =)

Re: how to turn off or silent the screen tap sound?

Settings>Profiles>start scrolling down till you see Touch screen sounds.

Re: how to turn off or silent the screen tap sound?

1) Settings - Profiles
2) Scroll down and click on "Touch screen sounds"
3) Switch it to off.
4) Click Save

Re: how to turn off or silent the screen tap sound?

...slightly OT, but it also concerns the possibility to turn off sounds:

Is there a way to turn off the NOKIA hymn when booting up the device ?

I know there is a way to do this on the N97, but so far I didn't manage to find anything for the N900.

Thanks and best regards,

Mike

Re: how to turn off or silent the screen tap sound?

I'm sure the sound is buried somewhere in the firmware. Maybe a simple matter of finding it and replacing the file with a similarly named blank sound file.

Re: How to turn off or silence the screen tap sound?

With touch screen sounds, key sounds, and system sounds all off I still get the 'tap' sound using the screen. The only way I can get rid of it is by using silent.

Are you sure it a touch screen sound? By default, the vibrator will also activate upon every screen touch for haptic feedback. You can disable that under Settings -> Display -> Touch Screen Vibration.

Way expensive Haptic Screen and everyone wants to turn it off

Re: How to turn off or silence the screen tap sound?

thanks! a reboot did the job.

I really don't see the point of haptics. A pointless noise and a waste of the battery!

how do i disable the haptic vibrations, i think they are obnoxious.

Settings -> Display -> Touch Screen Vibration, as posted by sljonson a few posts up

It's actually not using much battery at all. The difference between haptics and sound on/off for touchscreen taps battery-wise is negligible.

Re: How to turn off or silence the screen tap sound?

i guess vibrations are more power-consuming...?

Haptics are vibration. :)

Re: N900 'click sound'

How ironic. I didn't have this issue when I first got my N900, but after I did a firmware reset, the sounds and vibrate wouldn't turn off no matter what I did.

Thanks for the command!! :)

That worked like a charn...the feedback sounds more like a critter...Thanks for the enlightenment...!!!

Why the double click? I don't need to do that.

Re: Turn off or silence the screen tap / click sound?

My problem is more awesomer than everybody else's! :)

The screen tap noise doesn't turn off *even in silent mode*.

Setting it off in the profile doesn't help either. Rebooting doesn't help: it comes up in silent mode with touch screen sounds set to off, but I still get the click. (Also, touch screen vibrate does nothing for me.)

Killing xmaemo-input-sounds "fixes" it.

If a bug was filed here, someone please point me to it so I can add my experience.

Re: Turn off or silence the screen tap / click sound?

well im getting a click sound when i press the top or bottom of screen even wih device turned off, the device is in brand new condition, but i think its either a poor quality build or its damaged inside the screen, strange cos im very gentle with it, ive also read about this elsewhere, it only goes away if i push the screen down on to the keyboard a the sides, i think the glass and the surrounding trim are the problem, but it is a very clear click sound,

Re: Turn off or silence the screen tap / click sound?

hey, i too have this. I have owned my nokia n900 for 2 weeks now.

and a few days ago i dropped it on pavement when getting out of the car.

Since then i notice that the screen makes this clicking sound when i press on it. I must say i am not impressed.....
I was not sure if this was just from it falling or if it happened before, and i just didnt notice (i did a pretty good inspection after the fall)

I am also a bit disappointed overall in its ability to handle falling, although nothing seemed to break.. it really does not seem that sturdy anymore.

I had an Xperia x1 before this, and that was the toughest phone i have ever seen. Mine had falled on pavement probably 100+ times, and rolled down stone stairs, and even fell into a puddle 2 times. It still works GREAT!

i must say i have never used a phone that was built as well as the X1 since.
