N900 crashes a Nokia BH-905 Headset?

Hi guys,

not sure if I'm supposed to notify this here or at Nokia itself. So I'll try at the maemo booth first.

Today I (yet again, second time so it's a serious thingy) experienced a bug during normal use of my Nokia N900 / Nokia BH-905 (bluetooth headset). The end result being my headset crashing and me needing to totally reset it before I can pair it with the n900 again.

In Chronological order:

1. starting the mediaplayer playing a tune or a video (doesn't matter which)

2. A incoming phonecall takes place, all's well. They can hear me, I can hear them. Conversation takes place and the call ends normally.

3. Now **** hits the fan. The mediaplayer can't reuse the audio stream because it says it's in use. If I open up the phone app it states the connection isn't in use, I try to make another phonecall to see if that works. Result: connection is made, but I can't hear anything, they can't hear me through the headset.

4. When I try to disconnect the headset in the N900 and reconnect it, it doesn't respond in any way.

5. I have to manually reset the headset as it's fully unresponsive. (Press volume down, back and the multifunctional key)

After doing this I can re-pair the headset with the n900 and use it normally again. For phonecalls and mediaplaying. As long as I don't have a song running in the background when I'm receiving a call (and probably making a call, not yet tested) it's working.

Please tell me how to proceed with this.
I'm a fairly well suited linux user, so I can cough up any logfiles you want from places where I haven't found them yet or turn on debug modes I don't know about.

Re: N900 crashes a Nokia BH-905 Headset?

Sorry Mikec,

It's not the bug. This goes a bit harsher even. It really crashes the entire functionality of the BH-905. I have to reset the BH-905 in order to use it again with _any_ device. With any I mean having tested it with other phones and my laptop prior to doing a reset.

I don't have this issue with connecting and reconnecting during normal operations. This also includes disconnecting or connecting halfway a phonecall or such.

This is purely a bug directly related to the combination of the mediaplayer and the phone application as far as I've seem to have found out. I'd take any hints for further investigation or do I have to post this directly to the maemo bugs page?

Re: N900 crashes a Nokia BH-905 Headset?

I made a call last night whilst music was playing. The call rang and rang and I eventually hung up. The music didn't start back up again..

I also noticed that the headphones weren't beeping when I hit the play/pause button.. I also found I couldn't turn them on and the blue light stopped flashing.. hmm

when I got home, a brief google revealed this thread and someone else mentioning reseting the head phones..

I tried the three button reset, nothing happened.. no lights or noises..

I put them on charge.. I tried resetting again.. nothing.. puzzled and a bit more googling later I tried "turning them on".. they turned on and I was able to start the music playing again (I'd paused it when I realised nothing was working)

Thing is, this has happened only once and I do use them a fair bit.. It actually seemed more like the battery was flat (and yet I charge them daily and use them for at most 3 hours)

I didn't need to re-pair and I didn't need to restart the phone.. I pressed the play pause button and the music started again..

I have found that the headphones perform terribly when wifi is active.. out on the street using 3g they're better than they were with the N97 I was using previously!

Cool to see I'm not the only one. (Doesn't make it any better, but it means I'm not imagining things.)

For me, I had my last crash yesterday evening. I did the reset once and followed the exact order as stated in the BH-905 manual: Volume down first, then (while keeping it pressed) add the back button, and finally add the press on the multifunctional button. Keep it pressed for 15 seconds or more (was my own input, and it makes sure it does the work properly and in one go).

Re: N900 crashes a Nokia BH-905 Headset?

hmm. its doing it more often!!! Seems to be more common after a long call, rather than a short one.. grrr

jrkalf 2009-12-12 09:56

Re: N900 crashes a Nokia BH-905 Headset?

I've had one unrelated to the mediaplayer now too.

I had a crash while pressing the multifuntional key (to end the phone call) while the other party hung up at the exact same time.

This one also caused my Bluetooth stack to completely crash. It took a reboot of my machine to start the bluetooth stack correctly again and show my paired devices again.

Perhaps we need to make a bug report on this one?

Jelle.

bh903 work fine for me

edit..
bh903 makes random phone calls to the last person on the call list like voice dialing is malfuntioning

Re: N900 crashes a Nokia BH-905 Headset?

My BH-905 crashes too. :-( on the N900.

mostly if I move the phone out of range and then back again. Then the BH-905 requires a complete reset.

Me too.

My N900 and BH-905 are wonderful when they work. But the blasted headphones keep crashing. Not good for £750 worth of equipment.

hi all so this is definately a n900bug not faulty headsets? i was really tempted by the headphones but would you recommend waiting? Many thanks

Re: N900 crashes a Nokia BH-905 Headset?

In my opinion and from further research on equipment available to me, it's definetly a N900 error.

There's also another error floating about with the n900 icm with wifi/bluetooth. Whenever something happens with the connectivity of the n900 audio played over bluetooth (whether a phone call or other audio) the audio starts crackling.

There's a bugfix already in place for the above mentioned bluetooth/wifi issue. I hope it fixes the stability of the entire bluetooth stack.

I've now also tested it against my bluetooth car stereo (JVC type KD-BT11) and that one has issues as well.
-----------------------------

Drill down of the issue till now for me. Further testing of the error for me is concentrated in the simultanious hangup of the phonecall. When I hangup the phonecall at the same time or nearly the same time as my caller it will hang the bluetooth stack (when used with my carkit, phone reboot fixes it) or it hangs the BH-905 and a reboot of that device fixes it as well.

This is very notable in the phone application as well, where it becomes really slow. I've already dropped a complaint at NOKIA, but them buggers never responded :(

Re: N900 crashes a Nokia BH-905 Headset?

It happened once but I suspected it to be a problem with the BH-905s since I could not get the BH-905s to turn on after the initial pairing with N900 (it would not show up blue light).

Had to reset it.

Now they both behave fine, always autoconnecting - working well with media player functions.

I do miss voice dialling capabilities though (voice commands/initiating call over BT)

Re: N900 crashes a Nokia BH-905 Headset?

I too have just experienced this issue with N900 and BH-905 on the first day of using them together on only the second call I made.

Finished the first call and then made another. Somehow the audio went to the handset not the headphones. Tried to make the call again but the headphones went dead.
The headset connection icon wasn't there and there phone indicated no bluetoth connection. I just could not get the bluetooth indicator light on at all and no buttons responded.

The ANC worked and if I used the cable I could hear music from the N900.

Found this thread and the three button reset seeed to work after much fiddling. They now work.

Will see if this happens again and but if it does I will likely return the headphones.

This coulpled with the bluetooth/wifi issue when playing music (using of the wifi interuptions the bluetooth audio and then the music pitch goes funny) really makes we wonder about the quality of nokia software and their testing....

Very disapointed given cost of the phone and headset. There should not be this many issue!!!!

Re: N900 crashes a Nokia BH-905 Headset?

I've got BH-905 too. BH-905 has done a total lock up once for me when paired with N900, but usually works fine. Didn't really pay attention to the conditions though. I'll try to keep an eye on this too.

Re: N900 crashes a Nokia BH-905 Headset?

I've not extensively tested this, but from a few testings I've noticed that if I stop being impatient and use the multifunctional key actively (as in self ending a phonecall) it will take about 5 extra seconds but under normal circumstances it will keep working.

As in: let your opposite cancel the phonecall.
As said, not extensively tested this... I've not tested the situation where I only used the touchscreen to cancel the phonecall.

My BH-905 worked mostly fine until the most recent update. Now it won't pair with my N900.

I'm still able to pair with new firmware, connect and listen. It disconnects but that's because BH-905 is low bat (haven't charged since last Thursday) and it made a "low battery sound".

Re: N900 crashes a Nokia BH-905 Headset?

Now continually getting the problem of the BH 905 crashing and it a real pain.
Practically every phone call requires a reset and sometimes they crash mid call and I'm left wondering what has happened and if the call is now going through the handset...
I'm getting very proficient at resetting the headphones via the three button method but even then there is occasionally issue in re-pairing as the bluetooth icon shows a connection but there is no headset icon.
I must manually go into the bluetooth device manager and editing the pairing to tell it to reconnect.
Not good considering Nokia states that these are 'compatible' devices

That suggests it is a compatibility problem between Bluez (linux bluetooth stack) and the headphones.. So, if a bluetooth device can crash the headphones, the headphones need the bug fix MORE than the dodgy source (in this case N900 / Android)

Has anyone ever updated the firmware on a Nokia headset/headphone?

Fixing the N900 doesn't solve the problem since other devices may still cause the headphones to crash.. I hate buggy peripherals, especially when they are top of the range ones..

terrible!

Re: N900 crashes a Nokia BH-905 Headset?

- Unfortunately, having spent more than 2 hours arguing with Nokia support and pointing out that The BH-905 IS a recommended accessory for the N900, they have confirmed that it is not being recommended anymore - despite it still being on the website! As most of the problems lie with the N900 and they will not be concentrating on that area of the phone until April or May 2010, anyone should look to return it for a refund!

Re: N900 crashes a Nokia BH-905 Headset?

Just had this occur with a VOIP call. Apparently the headset locked up shortly into the call, I tried switching to the handset but the audio stack was AWOL and I got nothing so I hung up. After that I went to start up some tunes again and the headset was still locked up so the music came out the N900 speakers. I didn't recall the reset shortcut so I put my headset on the charger for a while thinking it might have been a battery issue as I've been using it off and on for 3-4 days since I first got them and fully charged them up. Charging didn't fix the issue, but finding the shortcut here and resetting fixed the issue, and I haven't run into it again yet, but I have not been using the device as a phone yet, simply an NIT/VoIP device.

Re: N900 crashes a Nokia BH-905 Headset?

I am using the Nokia BH-905 with a Nokia E63 symbian S90 3ed phone, and it works without problems. Music plays, phone rings, I take the call, talk, finish the call, music continues to play. So it must be a problem with the N900.
I was hesitating a lot between the N900 / E63, and sometimes I wonder, what features I am missing, but reading all the bugs with the N900, in the end I am happy, that my phone just works.

Yup mine crashes from time to time. Dunno if its the headset or the N900 which is faulty.

It happens every 4-5 call atleast

Re: N900 crashes a Nokia BH-905 Headset?

There is (or at least soon will be) a potential alternative:

http://europe.nokia.com/find-product...eadset-bh-905i

Nokia BH-905i ... now with less "suck"

My 905s never crashed with my other Symbian headsets, but the crashing with the N900 is truely truely irritating.. Especially if whilst you're wrestling with the headphones trying to get them to reset, the N900 decides it'll resume playback through its own speakers.. grrr

Maybe these updated headphones will have a better bluetooth firmware

Re: N900 crashes a Nokia BH-905 Headset?

noooo...why is it white?

i wonder if nokia can confirm if the issue still exists or not.. guess I'll send them an email

cpitchford 2010-09-17 15:38

Re: N900 crashes a Nokia BH-905 Headset?

They've not confirmed the issue exists in the past..

The BH-905i are available in black and white, unlike the BH-905 which are only available in black

Re: N900 crashes a Nokia BH-905 Headset?

I've seen some discussion on the Nokia support forum of the bh905 being incompatible with the n900. Again the issue is probably the Bluez stack, so maybe it's fixable.

The BT headset that I really want is the Lightspeed Zulu but it's about 2x as expensive as an N900 so my wallet isn't ready for it. The BH905 is an interesting concept and I hope the issues are worked out sooner or later, and that they make a version where the battery is replaceable. I'm not going to buy a $300 disposable headset.

Re: N900 crashes a Nokia BH-905 Headset?

has anyone tried the BH-905i with the N900? does it still crash?

what about with PR1.3?

cpitchford 2011-03-03 03:35

Re: N900 crashes a Nokia BH-905 Headset?

PR1.3 still causes the BH-905 to crash..
the BH-905i, however, seem to work far better..
I've not had them crash yet... They also don't do that perculiar rate change in which the audio speeds up when the signal is interrupted...

droll 2011-03-03 04:21

Re: N900 crashes a Nokia BH-905 Headset?

thank you for the feedback! time to go shopping for a BH-905i!

Re: N900 crashes a Nokia BH-905 Headset?

i had a similar experience with my bh-905 headset but i dont think the bug is with the n900 but with the headset as the method to troubleshoot this very specific problem is addressed in the user guide that comes with the headset...just my 2 cent...it sucks on phone calls and crashes almost every time....its alright tho...u look silly having a conversation through over-the-ear headphones anyway

Swimm12984 2011-03-03 04:36

Re: N900 crashes a Nokia BH-905 Headset?

and i can confirm the same exact problems with my bh-504 headset (and the same troubleshooting in the manual as well) that i purchased alongside my n900 at the now defunct Nokia NYC Flagship store in 2009
