[Maemo 5] n900Fly - An irresponsible app for the n900

Hello community,

--- BEGIN DISCLAIMER ---
I just got my n900 with plans to develop things for it. I've being developing for Ubuntu for a long time and never really cared about cell phones (I had a nokia 3410 bf. the n900.. lol). But well. things change.
--- END DISCLAIMER ---

In the same way as many users here, I wanted to start with something *really* simple so.. here comes the n900Fly..

Start the app and throw your phone into the air, it will show how long was the "flight" and a naive estimative of its height.
(Yes, I got the idea from the much "acclaimed" iPhone Hangtime)

It is pretty damn simple (the free-fall *detector* deserves improvement) and "fun".

.deb for freemantle/n900:

Files:
http://www.das.ufsc.br/~scotti/n900Fly/

Screenshot:
http://www.das.ufsc.br/~scotti/n900Fly/sshot.png

I thing with some improvements (including a good disclaimer excluding any responsibilities for the developers if you crack ur phone playing with this) it could become one of the first "idiot n900 apps"

Enjoy, report bugs, send fixes... anything..

C ya!

ha ha ha really sounds like a runner up for the "idiot-app" title :D

Must say I wouldn't mind playing this game with an iPhone but I'm pretty reluctant of doing it with my n900 :p

I wonder if you can get it to take a photo at the top of the throw....

The "Hello ****ers, the eagle has landed" wordage is priceless!

Re: n900Fly - An irresponsible app for the n900

Hey! The idea of taking a picture "up there" is good.
The problem is finding "when" it is "up there". What I could thing right now is to take many pictures during the "flight" and then when the phone lands pick the one in the middle.

I'll study this more.. but for sure it is a good idea!

cpscotti 2009-12-08 18:39

Re: n900Fly - An irresponsible app for the n900

Lol...
The hello ***ers is there just for historical reasons.
It all started with a "Hello World" label.. and hmm... "Hello World" had it's time.. it's not fun anymore.

definitely should go to OviStore for 0.99$ :D

That was my first idea but n900 is "too awesome" to OVI...

when the accelero show zero g it is at its top (unless it is spinning offcourse, but that can be 'filtered' out)

Welll... the accelero picks up acceleration, not velocity. Ideally acceleration is zero through the whole "journey". Since the accelerometer is inside (and fixed to) a heavier body it in fact suffers "accelerations" from within the phone itself (like when it is spinning) but that is very noisy...

indeed,I was a bit quick. :) acceleration should be constant, ideally 1G, if there is no rotation.
make a movie and select the top-frame is the easiest solution. or select top 10frames and combine them in a picture to get a sense of movement.

Yep! well.. just for accuracy..

An accelerometer measures the proper acceleration it experiences relative to freefall.

This is the kind of app that you DON'T use on a regular basis but that you show to your friends in order to convince them to buy the gadget! :)
We need this apps!

Thank you..

Please put it to extras.

I hope you do, so that it's the first app I'd install in my N900 when it comes.

Please leave it in Extras-Testing. I think it's very obvious how this app could fataly crash and brick your device.

now we just need some fart apps, then theres no excuse for a iphone anymore ;)

How about a dishonesty app? Like when your girlfriend calls alibis start flashing on the screen and you can just keep hitting next until you get the one you want.
Would require a couple hundred alibis from simple to extreme.
Simple=easily accepted
extreme=requires more lieing and more details

Example alibi "I saw a car accident on the way home and the police stopped me to take my witness account."

You can have difficulty levels and have buddies with same app that collaborate your lie cuz they get sms of alibi that you can attach notes to.
Call the app cheaters.

Also would be nice to have an interactive karaoke program like AlSong for the N900.

Asian girls might like an app that replaces their eyes with different types of circle lenses pictures that they see online so they could see what they would like.

An app that lets me snap a picture of foreign text like Korean and the tablet auto translates it.

A "you sunk my battleship" game app with nice videos or animations when a ship is sunk and matches you to an opponent (ask Mattel toy company first or whoever owns that game).

An app that keeps a large database of animal and insect experts and if you think you found a new species you snap geotagged picture and pick "looks like" category and it auto sends picture to experts but experts have to volunteer and choose what "looks like" category they are willing to be sent.

Open source flash so that we don't have to wait for adobe everytime there is a new version out.

You realize that those can really end up as VERY funny and useful softwares? Except for the flash thing..

Also.. for the ones "having fun" with the app... now it keeps track of one's records and some other minor tweaks..

App now in extras-devel

HEhehe... well.. since the aim is the extras.. I needed to be a little more serious..

You never know who you are going to offend!

Also, just upload what "I believe" its the "final" version for now. Lot's of improvements including more responsible cpu usage when idle and a "Reset Records" button..

(I would never press such a button but since someone asked for it..)

This new version should be built soon..

No, for 499$ with a new n900 included ...
I think you need a handful devices for new records .....

well... but there is always the non-destructive cheats:
  • Skydiving
  • Going to the ISS (this is for you Shuttleworth)
  • Setting up a big "blankets cushion" to "airbag" the phone's fall
  • ...

Add a feature to upload your results to an online server and show the user's current standing... :)

Any possibility to measure the 'hardness' of landing? A hard landing would be interpreted as a failed catch and generate extra dumbass points :)

About the server, I thought about it but since it's totally open source, it would take 5 minutes to receive a 376294km entry from some funny guy!... Unless we had some sort of compiled version with crypto.. and even then.. someone...

Now. about measuring the 'hardness' of landing, it is totally plausible! I also had that idea.. but well.. maybe for v.2...
Another things in mind are:
  • "Sweet mode" where it only counts if the phone lands on the same direction it was before taking off
  • Check if there was acceleration to generate the flight in order to make life of skydivers a little bit harder
  • ...

Comming back to the acceleration thing. Assuming that the phone does not rotate, why should be the acceleration constant to zero? I think RDJEHV was right. It is the rate of change of the velocity. If you throw your phone straight into the air, it gets slower and slower, until it reaches its highest point. There the acceleration should be zero, i.e. for a moment the phone is weightless. That is precisely what happens during a parabolic flight http://www.experiencezerog.com/parabolic.cfm

Edit:
Nevermind, you are right. The acceleration should be constant to 1G, correct? I think I got confused

Umm, no. The acceleration will be constant - 1G. What other force is acting on the phone in mid air? A parabolic flight doesn't actually experience zero-gee, it just feels like it - the plane is actually accelerating downwards at 1G.

Well.. you should all try accDisplay since physics are not helping. The reason why the phone's accel. readings are all zero (and not 1g) is because all the phone parts (including the accelerometer's internals) are (de)accelerating equally. Accelerometers measure acceleration differences relating to "free-fall".
Wikipedia might help

For example, the ISS "feels like" zero G (and indeed a accelerometer there will read 0) only because it's indefinitely falling towards earth: orbiting.

Well.. we could go on explaining and giving lot's of examples but really... wikipedia sometimes help.

I really suggest that you (the ones that are still getting how accelerometers work) install accDisplay (extras-testing). With this tool you can "record" the accelerometer's readings and playback slowly and really see what happens.

Maybe those guys will adapt it for a new discipline. Height instead of distance :D

With all this accelerometer action there seems to be a missing feature PORTRAIT MODE

sorry am I the only one who thinks its not really appropriate for this type of language on an app???

Re: n900Fly - An irresponsible app for the n900

Cool idea. I hope you make it a success. It's funny, i like funny.

I wonder...what if the N900 was shot up into space? Would it come back? And what about the height lol?

Try thinking about making a reverse app - when you drop the phone from a cliff to check how deep it is.

daperl 2009-12-15 20:35

Re: n900Fly - An irresponsible app for the n900

Add video recording to this app and then put the n900 in a bubble.

Weeee!

Bytales 2009-12-15 23:02

Re: n900Fly - An irresponsible app for the n900

Well, at the top of the flight, the acceleration is zero. If there is a way you can detect this with the accelerometer on the phone, that would be the moment to take the picture.
I don't know how the accelerometers work on the n900, but that's the main idea.

Original Poster, if you are here to make apps for the N900, here is my first idea. Hope you like it.
