Network Error

Since I installed the msn plug in I have been unable to connect close to half the time. On my status it just says network error. Yesterday I was unable to connect for the whole day. I thought it was because the plug in was still in Testing but I doubt this is the case. Today not only is there a network error on msn but also on skype. This means I am unable to chat to virtually all of my contacts. Big issue for me cause IM is one of the 3 main reasons I got the N900.

Has anyone been getting this network connection error? Does anyone know a way to fix the problem?

Re: Network Error

Think I fixed the Skype problem. Somehow I got logged on on my laptop and so that must have disconnected the connection on the N900.

Checked to make sure I wasn't also logged on on msn on laptop but I am not so that does not explain the msn N900 problem. I deleted the Testing Catalogue after I installed the plug in as people say opening device to Testing could cause problem. Could the absence of the Catalogue be the problem? i.e you have to have the Catalogue available on your device in other for any apps installed from that catalogue to function properly.

Catalogue shouldn't be the issue - that is just telling the application manager where installation packages live. This is the reason why there is a caveat about using non-production repositories - when the code is stable and safe it will be pushed to extras as a production package.

Okay thanks. Will install amsn. Couldn't for the life of me find where to find it for the N900 but will search again.

Re: Network Error

I had the same problem with account-plugin-butterfly. First time I installed it it worked fine, but from then on I always got "Network error". Now using haze, seems to work better (so far).

Re: Network Error

I had this massive same problem with account-plugin-butterfly as well... Only a restart would allow network connection. Hopefully haze will work better!!!

Re: Network Error

I've just had an update message for account-plugin-butterfly so going to see if that helps now!

Re: Network Error

I've had the same.

And the latest updated didn't fix it. Quite a pain. I'm tempted to try haze but the -devel label is putting me off.

Re: Network Error

I am (still) having no problems whatsoever with haze.

Well after many said haze is more stable I decided to get that instead. Still get the same problem. Only good thing is that it resolves if I go into account settings and save. Much better than having to switch off and on as I had to do with butterfly. But you have to constantly do this as it constantly drops off. And today even that is not solving the problem although I have not tried switching off and on. Plus it is not only msn I can't connect to today but also google messanger and yahoo messanger.

Maemo isn't Windows, so it seems to me that it ought to be possible to fix things without restarting all the time. Instead, surely one could use the terminal to restart a service/daemon/process to fix this until the bugs are ironed out. I'm at work so don't have time to look into this, but maybe next week when I'm off I'll have a poke about.

I'm new to Maemo (although have plenty of Unix experience). Anyone have any thoughts/info on this as a possibility?

Re: Network Error

I don't meant to sound like a fanboy, or be offtopic, but, for the record, one should not mistake bad application design or userbase with operating system limitation.

Windows only *requires* rebooting for kernel updates and non-stoppable services, like the filesystem driver. Everything else asks for reboots because they can't be bothered to stop services, close running programs or dismount hardware. Others do so just to be on the safe side.

On Windows 7, ATI/AMD update video drivers on the fly. Windows update does the same for NIC and sound cards at the very least. There are documented, mouse-only or keyboard only ways of restarting the GUI/Explorer for apply settings and load/unload extensions.

Also, nothing stops the user for updating files by hand via command line, it's right there in plain text.

Do you really think that developers reboot the system every compile/build?

I am aware that praising Windows in a Linux forums is not a good idea, but I'm not trying to dispense smugness, just trying to lower the myth count.

Don't even get me started on format.

Re: Network Error

wow its seems to be buggy... after a few N900 restarted it has managed to work.

I'm not sure but has anyone notice the length of time before it manages to connect to the msn server during authentication. for me it take anthing between 15-30secs

Does anyone know the reason for this. I noticed it doesnt matter which type of connection I use it differs whilst all other IM "plugins" manages to log without a hitch.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record....

What part of this is not a production release do people think means something other than - this still has kinks and bugs or it would be a production release?

I understand its not even release globally... But is there a way to post a bug to the dev or do I have to wait till the fixes are complete hoping it has been fixed

Re: Network Error

I was able to recover my IM connection from this same 'network error' problem by doing the ff:

- switch IM status to offline.
- switch connection type from wifi to gprs/3g
- switch IM status to online

I believe what needs to happen is all IM accounts have to be offline before switching to a different internet connection type.

In the my case, the problem occured after I switch from cellular connection to wifi so the steps listed above fixed the issue without rebooting my phone.

benaranguren 2009-12-31 17:11

Re: Network Error

I just tried it again but instead of flipping internet connection type,

- switch IM to offline
- disconnect all internet connection
- switch IM to online

Worked like a charm.

benaranguren 2010-01-06 05:49

Re: Network Error

okay even easier workaround.

- press power button
- select 'Offline mode' from popup menu.
- press power button again
- select 'Normal mode'

your IM connections should now be restored :)

SirMuttley 2010-01-06 13:12

Re: Network Error

Have to say those don't work for me.

Rebooting is still the only sure way of doing it.

Does anyone know when this will be fixed as it really kills the argument for the N900 being great for all in one IM communication.

SirMuttley 2010-01-06 13:14

Re: Network Error

Just to extend that.

I never have the problem with built in IM accounts like Google Chat and Skype.

It's only the 3rd party ones I've installed MSN (both Haze and Butterfly) and QQ.

Re: Network Error

MSN keeps logging out or not logging in at all at random times for me, this happens several times almost every day. I used Butterfly before but now I use Haze but the problem is present on both. Is there a solution for this? Or is it filed in bugzilla, I searched without success...

IM Network Error [Temp Fix]

If you get network error in IM accounts plugging easy fix without restart is to kill the task in Xterminal, the task will start again if you open 'My Availability' by pressing the power button.

For MSN Butterfly the command is /usr/bin/python /usr/lib/telepathy/telepathy-butterfly

Fast way to do it is to type in xterminal: (sudo gainroot required)
killall python

Re: Network Error

the plugin forgot about the server settings (somehow...), HAZE and ICQ brought constant Network error to me and didnt proceed with changes... so setting the port by hand didnt work... installed upgrades from testing, didnt work as it does not replace msn it adds another, deleted haze and ICQ accounts, added new ones for both, for icq it works like a charm but for msn you need to merge your contacts again...

PS after rebooting didnt work...

Re: Network Error

I have MSN Haze that came as part of the pidgin protocols package (I don't recall installing this, it appeared after I installed twitter functionality, I think).. Aaaaanyways, worked fine the first ~2 weeks after I set it up and now I can not connect, ever, while I can connect over the same wireless network on my desktop no problem. On top of that, check this weirdness out: with my MSN haze acct disabled on the phone I still occasionally get spam messages put of nowhere with links from my MSN contacts (whose accts have been hacked or whatever). Anybody have any ideas what's wrong?

Re: Network Error

Rebooting and offline mode both didn't work for me so for the moment I use a script to kill it.

msn-fix.sh:

#! /bin/sh

if [ $(ps -eo cmd | grep -c telepathy-butterfl$) -ne 0 ]; then
kill `ps -ef | grep telepathy-butterfl | grep -v grep | awk '{print $1}'
fi;

/usr/bin/python /usr/lib/telepathy/telepathy-butterfly > /dev/null 2>&1 &

Re: Network Error

I think this error may be unique to MSN protocol. And the plugin just isn't handling it gracefully.

When using pidgin on my desktop with MSN I would get the same error if I logged in simultaneously from my laptop. It seems like MSN would log out other simultaneous sessions (i don't know if this is true).
- However Pidgin would display error text if this happened, and offer to reconnect. Which interestingly would make the other computer's MSN connection drop out with an error too after the 1st computer stole it back!

Is there a bug report somewhere? It may be eminently fixable if it detects this and offers to reconnect. Its probably just related to breaking the session uncleanly and being unable to re-establish it.

fraz 2010-07-23 12:50

Re: Network Error

thought I better update my conclusions:

Seems like "telepathy-butterfly" is broken as I described above. Particularly when switching from wifi to GSM/3G

But MSN-pecan works as expected :) And its also a smaller install written in C rather than python.

(PS sorry for reviving a dead thread, just updating to help all the others lead by google.)

Re: Network Error

MSN is freaking crap on the n900! all plug-ins are not complete and arent making a connection half of the time. Loads of freaking network errors on wifi and gprs.

All other services work just fine.

I keep getting annoyed by the fact that so much functons are missing in all the msn plugins. it a freaking mobile computer! it should atleast be possible to block and unblock people and share files over the msn network.

i really dont understand why its nowhere close to possible on the n900...

Oh and this forum is sadly slow at some points... its very annoying!

Re: Network Error

I had a network error problem with MSN account while any other protocols, including Skype and ICQ worked just fine.

What helped me was to install MSN (pecam) protocol from available repository. After deleting the previous MSN IM account, I have re-installed it back again, this time with MSN (pecam).
Worked like a charm.

Re: Network Error

COuld some one please help me. msn pidgin (haze) worked for quite a while, but since a few weeks i get these network errors again. its really driving me crazy.

Most of the time msn wont work at all. but sometimes all of a sudden i see a green dot and msn is connected...

Can some one PLEASE tell me what is causing this trouble? My friend has the exact same problem on his n900.

Skype and other standard accounts work just fine.

I read somewhere that the the client sends a certificate that the pidgin server needs to verify and accept before a connetion can be made. according to the guy the certificate is not corresponding if you get a netwerk error. Removing this certificate should fix the network error problem. but i cant find any certificate in /home/.rtcom-accounts/haze/msn/[email]

anyone any idea if there are certificates and if yes, where can i delete those?

I thought I was the only one!! first the telepathy plugin, now haze!... heck, this is why people switch phones!!

Yes, I see the black screen on the all my messengers: ICQ, Yahoo, MSN (haze), Facebook... But when you click on "Accounts" and on the messenger, you can to access "advanced settings"... I can't only on the facebook...

wow, you think it's our responsibility to reverse engineer the msn protocol? does the n900 run windows? what makes you think it should work with MICROSOFT messenger then? (yeah old post, but it still deserves a rude response i think :P)
