N900 with lots of media - Slow performance? Here fix.
After dumping thousands of files to N900, media tracker was making my device unusable for a few minutes after startup.
But lo and behold, we have complete control of behavior! God Bless Gnome, God Bless Nokia vi /home/user/.config/tracker/tracker.cfg I just started playing with it, so i don't want to advise on any specific changes. Just check it out, make a backup and pay attention to where you put your media. You have the power! ;) |
Re: N900 with lots of media - Slow performance? Here fix.
Hi.
My desktop takes a little time to build on boot. So I played with this file and it didn't change anything for me. I disabled the tracker indexing and it didn't change anything as far as mine is concerned. But the delay is not bad. |
Re: N900 with lots of media - Slow performance? Here fix.
Hello guys. My N900 just arrived today. I have 12gb of music in aac format with album art, all music files sorted nicely. If i add all of them on the phone it takes a hell lot of time to update the media lybrary. That is not a problem, but the thing is sometimes the device doesn't start the update process, but i believe it starts somehow without showing the yellow bar.
However, the update process failes to create album arts for some files even if the files as same as the other files it has just created album arts for. Is there a way to manualy start the update process ? Or should i start looking for a new music player all together ? |
Re: N900 with lots of media - Slow performance? Here fix.
can plz xplain what we should do to disable complete image indexing ?
i mean if there is a way to just "see" the default image folder and then browse the rest of folders 1 by 1 . |
Re: N900 with lots of media - Slow performance? Here fix.
Hi,
could you give me more information about the tracker ? I have edit the file and add to the line NoWatchDirectory, $HOMEe/MyDocs/Win; to exclude all my windows stuff from the tracker. After that i have delete the file cache.db in /var/tmp/tracker-user and reboot the phone. Image from Win directory are show the image viewer application and the tracker-stats don't have change. Any clue ? |
Re: N900 with lots of media - Slow performance? Here fix.
on3st4b, i have found a solution. You MUST use xterm and vi.
1 - install (if possible) the ssh server, it be will be easier to edit the file 2 - open xterm on the n900 (or with ssh) 3 - type "cd /home/user/.config/tracker/" 4 - "cp tracker.cfg tracker.cfg.ORIG" (for make a backup file) 5 - "vi tracker.cfg" to edit the file. If you don"t know how to use vi, please read a quick tutorial on google 6 - go to the line NoWatchDirectory and add at the end of the line $HOME/MyDocs/Directory_I_dont_want_index 7 - save the file and exit 8 - "cd /home/user/.cache/tracker" 9 - "rm -f *.db" 10 - reboot the phone. It will take some time to rebuild the index. I don't know how to purge the index without clear it :( Post an other message for more help. (if it's ok, send me my first thanks :) ) |
Re: N900 with lots of media - Slow performance? Here fix.
Has anyone tried to lower the process priority?

the line $HOME/MyDocs/Directory_I_dont_want_index for images i should type $HOME/MyDocs/Images ? just want to be sure ill not make a wrong move :) PS: whould deleting the .images folder from the watchdirectory work the same ? if add the line $HOME/MyDocs/.Images should i delete the same folder from the watch list ? |
Re: N900 with lots of media - Slow performance? Here fix.
I don't know what directory you want to exclude.
Make a try, do it ! If something go wrong : "cd /home/user/.config/tracker/" "cp tracker.cfg.ORIG tracker.cfg" "cd /home/user/.cache/tracker" "rm -f *.db" reboot the phone, wait for tracker made the index and you go back in previous state, so you will don't break your phone. I have done the things 5 times since my first post and everything is fine. Imageviewer and Mediaplayer don"t index all my "Windows Only Stuff, Temporary file" now. Beware with the rm, do it in the good directory and only delete *.db, not all the file. If you want exclue MyDocs/Images add $HOME/MyDocs/Images Images and .Images are not the same directory ! case is sensitive. I dont't know whats happen if the same directory is in WatchList and NotWatchList. Last thing : Always keep the file tracker.ORIG so you can always restore the original configuration. |
Re: N900 with lots of media - Slow performance? Here fix.
in the vi , to quit typing mode u must press esc ...
but no esc key in the n900 ... any help here plz |
Re: N900 with lots of media - Slow performance? Here fix.
under the screen app of xterm you have :
"Ctrl Tab Esc ..." Just tap on "Esc" After that do : wq for save the file (on my french keyboard it's blue arrow, k, w, q) or tap on "Esc" and type :q! for exit without save (if you make mistake when edit the file, it's may be better to exit and restart) Do you have made the cp tracker.cfg tracker.cfg.ORIG before start vi ? It's very important. |
Re: N900 with lots of media - Slow performance? Here fix.
yes i have made the backup .
ty for the replys , u have been realy helpfull . and the mini guide very easy to follow . im thinking of removing the folder i want from watchlist and see what happends :P how can i restore the orig file if something goes wrong ? cp .cfg.orig .cfg ? |
Re: N900 with lots of media - Slow performance? Here fix.
yes
cp tracker.cfg.orig tracker.cfg remove the *.db file reboot the phone |
Re: N900 with lots of media - Slow performance? Here fix.
ok !!!!
i removed the .image folder from the watch list . if u do that u cant see the images from the Images folder , but u can still access them through the file browser . so i quess ill just rewrite the line and make a new folder and add it to notwatch list . ty alot for ur help . |
Re: N900 with lots of media - Slow performance? Here fix.
This thread is very helpful, but it'd be great if someone could write a GUI to control tracker!
|
Re: N900 with lots of media - Slow performance? Here fix.
1 more thing , what is the path to the memory card ?
searches for images there too , listing album covers etc, realy annoing :( |
Re: N900 with lots of media - Slow performance? Here fix.
I don"t have memory card yet :) (I want to fix the tracker problem before buy it)
Just put your memory card, open xterm, reduce the font (use volume down button) and do "df -h". You will see your memory card. The path will be in the last column. |
Re: N900 with lots of media - Slow performance? Here fix.
there are some options bout turning off the tracker , but that whould suck .
there is also an option bout the tracker priorety 0->20 but its already set to lowest . |
Re: N900 with lots of media - Slow performance? Here fix.
Its so much easier and faster to use "nano" instead of vi.

Re: N900 with lots of media - Slow performance? Here fix.
You don't need to manually remove the databases and restart the phone after modifying the configuration. Instead do:
~ $ tracker-processes -r This has the same effect: stop running tracker, remove databases and start a reindex. |
Re: N900 with lots of media - Slow performance? Here fix.
Does anyone know if its possible to just restrict images from looking in /home/user/.sounds/Music as its indexing all the album art?
Thanks Scott |

Re: N900 with lots of media - Slow performance? Here fix.
Hello guys, I've got a really big issue.
I would like to record videos with this phone, but when I start recording, this ****ing ******* starts a tracker indexer, and rebuilds the whole mother****ing database. This means the video is 0FPS after 6 seconds and 100% percent CPU load. What can I do? I've killed the tracking processes after copying videos on USB, I don't have time, now I can't do even one, because it wants to track first. Is there an application to turn off and on the tracking process completely? Because I use it, I like, but I ****ing want to use the phone, then watch the videos. |
Re: N900 with lots of media - Slow performance? Here fix.
Quote:
you can disable indexing using it or put some directory you copy your videos into no watch list so that tracker doesn't scan it:) |
Re: N900 with lots of media - Slow performance? Here fix.
Still there isn't a GUI for this? That's a shame... I can't even delete mp4 videos, it freezes the phone, completely. It looks like I will have to buy a new screen, or a new N900...
I hate when a phone does not respond for ages. |

Also instead of normal file manager i would suggest you use hamsterfiler. |
Re: N900 with lots of media - Slow performance? Here fix.
I use filebox and midnight commander, but thanks anyway. Hmm, it looks interesting. why haven't I heard about it before?
Tracker-cfg is good. |
Re: N900 with lots of media - Slow performance? Here fix.

I think the files are still somewhere because the device has the same amount of space left. |
Re: N900 with lots of media - Slow performance? Here fix.
istall tracker -cfg , rebuild databases from that ,if doesn't succed , read the log
|
Re: N900 with lots of media - Slow performance? Here fix.
I did that with no success and the log is empty when opened from tracker-cfg menu.
|
Re: N900 with lots of media - Slow performance? Here fix.
press rebuild databeses ,after that open the log
|
Re: N900 with lots of media - Slow performance? Here fix.
Thats what I did and the "tail log" was empty.
I also tried this: Code:
n900:~# tracker-processes -rCode:
n900:~# /usr/lib/tracker/trackerd -r &Code:
09 Aug 2013, 15:08:50: Tracker-Warning **: Could not add monitor for path:'/root/MyDocs/.sounds' |
Re: N900 with lots of media - Slow performance? Here fix.
Quote:
Code:
n900:~$ tracker-processes -r |
Re: N900 with lots of media - Slow performance? Here fix.
create the folowing folders on MyDocs with filebox :
.camera .sounds .images .videos .documents after that rebuild databases via tracker-cfg and post log here |
Re: N900 with lots of media - Slow performance? Here fix.
Looks like it might be useful to understand what the problem is first. Reviving an 8 months old thread with an out-of-the-blue description does not really help. " Now the folders are missing which I added to be not indexed..." Missing from where? Media Player? File Manager? Better problem description, please!
