Cig lighter adapter with USB port and generic micro USB cable doesn't work with my n900. Not sure if the nokia cable works in cig lighter port yet, will try tomorrow. Is there such a thing as non-powered micro usb cables vs. powered usb micro cables? If so that could be the issue as I know other devices can be picky depending on the cable. I would like a fix for this also, or at least know if we need to buy nokia cables exclusively.

I bought a generic Car Charger from Phones 4U the other weekend, no joy here either despite the LED lighting up so suspect this needs the data lines set to a controlled short as per prior post.

Good solution except for having to reboot device. Also need to swap out the batteries to charge them which could lead to forgetting (more like falling asleep before switching out) to charge one and going back to needing to juice up. Would've been nice to know this before hand. Could have planned ahead for this.

On preview my statement sounds way harsher than meant. My bad, just a statement no inflection meant.

Re: External Battery Packs

I've been able to get a Promaster Go charger to work, but only with an extra step.

Namely I had to reboot the device, and then plug in the charger when the phone was booting but before it was fully up. Pluging it in when the device is on results in no effect and plugging it in while the phone is off gives the few pulses of orange, nokia logo on un-backlit screen, vibrate, pause, repeat.

I'm gonna try looking into the data-pin issue once I can find a battery for my multimeter..

Is there a Nokia branded external battery pack that works with the N900?

Re: External Battery Packs

You need an adapter that ties the D+ and D- (TX/RX) lines together on the device side (but doesn't just ground them).

From Wikipedia:
Quote:

The Dedicated Charging Port shorts the D+ and D- pins with a resistance of at most 200Ω. The short disables data transfer, but allows devices to detect the Dedicated Charging Port and allows very simple, high current chargers to be manufactured.
You can make an adapter by cutting and soldering two wires from a USB extension cable:
Code:

            Red <------------------------> Red
Male  White X cut and        solder / White  Female
Connector  Green X insulate      together \ Green  Socket
      End  Black <------------------------> Black  End

Leave the red (+5V) and black (ground) lines connected straight-through. Cut the green and white (data) lines. On the female end of the cable (the end where you will plug in your USB<->microUSB cable), tie the two lines together. On the male end (the end that plugs into your power source), leave them cut and insulate them so they don't accidentally ground or short.

The N900 senses the tied-together data lines and will begin charging without expecting an actual smart USB host on the other end to negotiate voltages and other bus details. This should also work for other devices that don't like "dumb" power-only charging sources, like iPods and iPhones.

Disclaimer: While this adapter works for me and has not caused any damage to my N900, I do not take any responsibility for any of your equipment.

This might be helpful - choose custom and specify what you need along with the connector type - for those people not to keen on cutting and making their own

Worked like a charm.

Using the hint previously posted in this thread, I was able to make my new Zagg Sparq charge my N900. It took a few tries. I think the trick is to plug the cable into the battery first, then to slowly insert the micro USB end into the N900.

Well finally got it all working. I'm using 2 nokia adapters. The usb to mini plug and the mini plug to micro usb. Don't recall where/when I picked up the usb to mini plug, but I recall getting it cheaper than the ridiculouse price nokia wants for it. Color me a happy camper!

Anyone see the altoid mint tin charger kit? seems to me it would be easy to cross the usb pins on that out of the box so any cable would work. Ready made has the kits so I will try it and let people know

Re: External Battery Packs

I would be ideal if a vendor would create a new N900 backcover with a larger capacity battery (built it) which would supply more power.

It will grow tiresome to carry around an external powerpack of considerable weight and the connector cable.

Which companies that already provide these type of battery solutions need a tap on the shoulder to help the N900 out?

is working on it. Ask them to design the back so that the n900 can lie flat and level, leave the shiny off the camera surround, and maybe give it a decent flip out stand.

I've sent them a nice email asking for them to please make an extended battery for us n900 geek owners who don't care about bulkiness and are willing to pay for stuff.

The cables are as follows:
The usb to mini plug is the nokia ca-100
The mini plug to micro usb is the nokia ca-146c

The ca-146c I got from china via a link earlier in this thread for a dollar and some change and the ca-100 I picked up a few years ago for around 5 dollars.

I too was able to charge my N900, using an APC charger. The cable has to be plugged into the charger first, as suggested, but the trick for me is to plug it slowly, wiggling it up and down, instead of left and right. When the connector is midway through, pause for a while and wait for the charging message to appear.

What do you think about that monster? http://global.ebay.com/Portable_12V_...147313153/item How many times you think, it can charge n900?

I use a DC-11 without any issues. The only shortcoming is the thing itself needs a 2mm power supply to charge.

I got a retractable usb->2mm cable so I can charge it (leisurely) from a usb source. I can always plug it into mains if I am in a hurry.

Happy Energizer/XPal XP8000 user here. (8000mAh, not much bigger than N900, also can charge my laptop and my netbook)
It requires a custom cable to charge, like most non-nokia chargers.
I have the Brando USB adapter with charge/data switch, which works great for that !

That won't charge your N900. It's a 12V battery, not a 5V power pack.

It will charge it , if you search the forums you will find (there is a thread talking about 12v batteries and n900). You use car charger adapter and then a few changes and you are done.

I'm using the same device branded as AcmePower UC-1. Haven't yet found a suitable microusb charging cable/adapter for N900, but good to know it will work.

Ac Ryan Mobilit MT80328 , Amstron MedXP 66 , Wtop WT - L6600C seem to be the same rebranded 66WHr battery. Used as universal laptop battery charger , charged from any laptop battery and usb charging. They work with Nokia N900 with the ca-100 ca-146c adapters... http://i35.tinypic.com/34y21qa.jpg

Tekkeon Powerall works for my n900, using a custom usb cable with shorted inner pins. As a side note, it can also charge my everun note laptop which draws 8A @ 5V.
