VOIP useable for business calls in WLAN environment
 

I want to ask if you are using VOIP regular. I am wondering if this is acceptable for business calls nowadays or do you think it is still not usable. It probably depends on the provider of course. What is about the protocol implementation quality in the specific device?

I am using Google Voice + Gizmo5 and skype. Quality of Google Voice + Gizmo5 is great and better than skype.
For dialing you can use DialCentral (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=29347)

I sell and install a well known brand of phone systems, and every install i do, I always demo voip. Most users takes the option, and 9 times out of 10, users cannot tell the difference. I just tested my n900 with voipbuster tonight, (i live in the back of beyond in spain, with a 256k wimax internet connection) and quality was ok. Most small business,s will have 32x that broadband speed. Downtime with broadband is pretty much a thing of the past. so i would say voip is the way to go.

Gizmo5 on N900!!? will u clarify this to me plzz? coz from my experience with gizmo5 on n810 it's super clear and good that's y google took over gizmo project now:cool:

I create Gizmo5 account before Google bought it.
For connection I used this link: http://www.fromthefencepost.com/2009...ice-and-gizmo/

Shortly:
1. Go To: Menu> Settings> VoIP and IM Accounts > New
2. Under “User name:” you will see 2 blank fields separated by the “@” character. Enter your Gizmo username in the left field, and “proxy01.sipphone.com” in the right field. Enter your password in the password field. Check “Use for PSTN calls.”
3. Tap the “Advanced” button. Change “Transport:” to UDP. Tap “OK.” The Advanced options will close.
4. Tap “Next.” Enter an Account name of your choice. I called this account “Gizmo.”
5. Tap “Next,” then “Finish,” then “Close” to close the Accounts wizard.

Actually, it depends more on your network connection (on the n900 at least)

On wifi, the clarity is quite good. No lags, etc.

On Edge, not really
On 3G, maybe ok if the stars align :D

So for me, if I have decent wifi, and ac power, voip works as good as a laptop. Which the n900 is, mostly ;)

Well if you plan on using skype to login to business conference calls, you'll have to wait for a while for them to get DTMF up and running on the n900.

Outside of that if you are not looking at any IVR or DTMF for your calls, it all depends on how the network is for you.
Any direct line call i am making over skype on 3G goes great, edge not so great.

For Skype they are using Peer-to-Peer protocol unlike the client-server protocol being used by other providers.

If you have appropriate infrastructure in place (solid connectivity, decent latency, QOS if required, good handsets/mics/audio) then VoIP can easily surpass regular calls.

I use VoIP regularly for work calls on my laptop softfone, and almost exclusively for all calls made from home via a small cheap Linksys SPA3102 gatewat. The quality, especially via the HW linksys is impeccable.

The softphone is more prone to CPu contention issues leading to momentary breakup but this is down to the implementation rather than VoIP itself. The HW device is flawless.

What an odd question
Companies run whole call centres on VoIP.
VoIP over 3G may be a question, depending on the quality of your 3G network.
