I bought new sealed on from ebay seller and should receive it Monday. I emailed Nokia Support last week asking about warranty and the person that responded stated the warranty is tied to the IMEI number and to give them that to know if covered. Does anyone know if this is true? I have already ground down tabs on usb cable and plan on doing that to the charger to try and mitigate damage. Really nervous after reading this thread:eek:

its 2 weeks after i got my n900 when i read about this thread, until now, my n900's usb port is fine, just file those tabs down coz it'll help a lot.

you should really give you IMEI to nokia so they can determine if you device is registered under warranty. or check their website.

NOTE: your warranty depends on the region you order your n900

When did you get yours? I got mine in December and it still okay. I think people who got it earlier usually having this issues but a lot of people got it after January still having this issues as well...

I don't know.. But I always carefully plug my USB into it. Since after I've heard about this matter on this forum, I have grown my awareness to be more extra careful. I treat my N900 like a princess since day 1 lol.

I hope to have a long term relationship with it :D

Nokia sent it back refusing to repair it due to "evidence of user damage".

As if that wasn't aggravating enough, they sent it back without any USB port whatsoever.

Previously I could charge/use the USB in certain positions, now obviously I can't do anything at all.

I've now contacted consumer direct and my credit card company has also informed me that they will help me via another department that deals with these sort of issues but they're only open Monday to Friday. So I'll contact them too....

Arg! By now that mistake in policy should have been completely cleared up.

It's lame advice I know, but keep battling. The successes in this thread are your ammunition. If they fix one, they have to fix all.

Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues

I think there is something wrong. I sent my phone in and they replaced the usb port without me asking or noticing any issues with it whatsoever. I wanted them to take care of a speaker issue. I sent my phone in for a second time and they replaced the phone. Had a black spot when taking pictures. The funny thing is as soon as I said something about when and where I got it the customer service rep just stopped everything and made me send phone in. So if they replaced a usb port that I had noticed didn't have anything wrong it, nor did I request it I think it is an admission of something is wrong. Maybe the issue is so large they can't replace everybody's phone. I am starting to think of them as incompetent and since they seem to not know, I know what phone to not buy next time I spend $600 plus on a phone.

Texrat on this one i could not agree with you more, your absolutely 100% right here.
Maybe in your capacity you could point out a few facts to Nokia direct as you have some input there, or just maybe you already have and in that case many people will be very gratefull to you !!! :D

I actually just did that before you asked me and i was totally taken back because i never realised the fact you have already raised this issue to Nokia direct, all i can say is thankyou to you for everyone on this thread and hope Nokia do the right thing and replace every unit that is defective without too many problems because after all as you said yourself "if they repair/replace one they must repair all".

Cheers for the info, althought when I called they said they didn't do repairs. They recommended Carphone Warehouse thought so more helpful than Nokia!
Just called Nokia (before then) who hung up on me... bit like their website which keeps hanging when I try to log a call.

 It's a good thing I love my phone and its worth the effort to get it repaired!

Just spoke to Nokia after many days of trying to get through over the phone...

My case has been escalated to involve some senior engineers or supervisors or something. Made sure that the operator was aware that I've opened a case with UK Trading Standards.

Will keep this thread updated.

Edit: Never did get a reply from my original e-mail ticket to support.

Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues

DISCLAIMER: This post is not to annoy people with troubles, but to enlighten that it's not always that bad. Also illustrates the occasional mad efficiency of Finnish communication.

So my usb port decided to stop working a couple of days ago. I managed to charge the phone by putting weights on the usb plug :)

So the next morning at 10:00 I entered a local Nokia service spot, that is some official nokia care outpost. It's a small company.

anyway, this is in Finland so the dialogue was typical Finnish style..

Me: "Hey, do yuo fix these? (Shows my N900)
Clerk: "Yep"
Me: "Usb is busted"
Clerk: "ok, what's your phonenumber?"
Me: "So you'll fix it?"
Clerk: "Yep"
Me: "On Warranty?"
Clerk: "Yep"
Me: "My number is <my numer>. Can I have a lender, while you fix it?"
Clerk: "Yep" (hands me a phone)
Me: "When will I have it?"
Clerk: "Soon. We'll text you"

That's it. Took 3 minutes.

Then at 13:37 I get a text. "Phone Fixed" it said.
So I went back

Me: "N900"
Clerk: "Name?"
Me: "<my name>"
Clerk: "Here" (hands me my phone)
Me: "Thanks. This is yours" (Gives him the lender phone)
Clerk: "Thanks, bye."

That's it. That one took 1 minute and 30 seconds.

:)

A good example how it should work worldwide!

It would be no problem for me to drive 1 hour to the service point and wait 4 hours for the device. But repaired on the same day (and if they can't replace it) should work without big problems.

With my car I also drive to the service point and wait until they have fixed it.

My USB port broke!

Sadly my USB port broke off in the car a couple days ago. Thankfully it wasn't on my N900, but on my Magellan RoadMate. :p

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._6801991_n.jpg

As you can see, it separated and pulled the pads off, just like most of the N900 users have seen on their devices. That in spite of it having two post-throughs. Mind you, this has been traveling in a bumpy car for a few years, so that's partially to blame I'm sure.

Wichall 2010-04-28 12:07

Re: My USB port broke!

Here's my latest news:

I called Nokia yesterday again (Tuesday) after receiving no call back from Monday's call. The agent seemed to find my case and details and promised me a call back later that day after being escalated once again to the senior service department....Nothing happened.

So I called Nokia today (Wednesday) and spoke to another agent. After half explaining my case and asking his supervisor, he told me I had to be put through to the N900 department. So I spoke to another agent, and after much searching her database...my case appeared to have been lost. Great.

So I started over from the beginning and once I'd explained everything to her, she told me I'd have to wait another 48 hours after my case was escalated once again to the senior service department.

I lost it a bit here and told her that this is getting ridiculous, informed her of my discussions with Consumer Direct/Trading Standards and so she went off and spoke to her supervisor. She came back telling me that she's sorry for all the trouble and that later today I'd be receiving a call from the Supervisor.

Having now spoken to the supervisor, he's personally escalated my case to this service department everyone speaks of, and called me twice, which is nice, it shows that he's working on it.

I've now been promised a call back either later today or definitely tomorrow from the service department, and the supervisor told me they'd either repair or replace my phone.

So I'm hoping that this means everything is fine and my phone is going to be repaired, but I'm not convinced that I won't have to battle some more. So I haven't yet closed my case with Trading Standards...

Hope no one else has to go through all of this for Nokia's own design flaw.

Unless the manufacturing of the device is different I would expect chance of failure is same. Do you know if Nokia has changed the design of the Micro USB port?
Thanks,

Yeah looks like it's actually surface mounted, but it uses a couple of plastic pegs to help keep the port from moving.

Some boards are hybrid, ie, possessing through-hole and surface mount components. Exactly as the N900 board should have been.

I think that it's possible to reflash and everything without even using the USB port ever, right? I don't have a USB problem but this question comes up so frequently that I want to have the right answer in mind. I know it's possible to flash a kernel on your N900 because I've done it while overclocking (see Overclocking section of Wiki), so I would think you could do the whole thing.

If so, where are the best instructions for doing so, for me to refer people to?

Just installed Nokia PC Suite on PC. I was able to connect N900 with the PC by Bluetooth and hence connect PC Suite to N900 by way of Bluetooth. Successfully did synchronization using Bluetooth so hopefully will be using micro usb port for charging only. I am waiting for desktop charger and extra battery. I might start just swapping batteries daily even though taking back off irritating but less than losing usb port. I sincerely feel for all that have suffered this failure that should not have happened this prematurely.

i've been doing the same.

I have an "external wall charger" and 2 batteries. i only use the usb port for re-flashing by flasher 3.5.

I transfer files via bluetooth or, by using a "T-Flash"

Wow all that? That would be way too inconvenient for me to justify owning the phone. All I did was file my various chargers and usb cables and they go in smooth and easy. I am not worried about this issue happening to my phone. If it does, well time to get a different phone.

For anyone else who wants to send their phone to service. Peel the inv.Shield off, register with the serial number you've got with the shield (credit card like format), register and contact them. They will send you an replacement shield. That's part of their guarantee. At least the last time I've checked. You may have to pay the fee for mailing the old shield to them. But rather spend some cents on mail than 20 bucks for a new one.
That was a buying reason for me.
