In a nutshell, you need to be persistent. Nokia corporate has agreed to repair/replace devices suffering usb failures. Some service centers are resisting for whatever reasons, and your recourse is to push back hard and often. Point out that numerous people have had their devices replaced under warranty.

Perhaps we could get a sticky with info regarding the warranty process and challenges?

I don't moderate in this subforum, but if someone with time wants to create a new thread for that purpose I will certainly help get it stickied. Or maybe a moderator in this subforum could add the content to the first post here.

Also, I still plan to do a post mortem on this issue on my blog. I only held off when incidents started rising again and I wanted to see how that played out. I hope to get to the article soon.

Na that's not the problem. I use three different chargers and they all stopped working at the same time. So must be a problem with the device. Unless I experienced one of the biggest coincidences ever.

Was there today. Now they used some kind of microscope and pointed out that something was broken because that I have dropped it. I said so what, look what you have done to the screws (they are destroyed), wouldn't be surprised if it's you that have broken does to.
Well gave up and bought an external charger today. Hopefully I find a micro-USB connector someday so can I fix it by my self (the legs are broken on the original after I got it back from service).

Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues

I have a terrible dilemma. My niece Nylah was born yesterday, and I have lots of video and photos of her on my mass memory. My battery has died, and my USB port is dead. It had been finnicky for awhile, but I could usually get it to charge with a little trickery, but not anymore.

So now I have to send my device for repair without being able to back up my eMMC. I have no way of saving any of my data, and Nokia could simply replace my device, costing me to lose years of audio and video I don't have backed up anywhere, as well as my contacts.

Any ideas? I'm not an experienced solderer, but I'm desperate in DFW if anyone is willing to help. I'm now without a PC, phone, or music. I'm...NAKED!

Buy external charger. Charge battery. Backup data from N900 to PC via Wifi or bluetooth.

Unplugged my charger today and the usb port came with it. Tomorrow I fly to asia for a month. This couldn't have come at a worse time.

How much luck have people had getting this fixed through Nokia? I now have to pray I can find a external charger either at the airport or when I get to china.

Fun Fun.

Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues

The usb pin came out of the phone today. I contacted Nokia Support and UPS is picking it up on Monday. I live in the UK. As this is a documented fact - design flaw of the N900, is this covered by the warranty? Also do you think that they will repair it or give me a new one. I am also worried because, not even a week after i got my N900 from Nokia Store in London, UK, i noticed a few dead pixels on the phone, very annoying so i had to take it back. They then gave me a new one. But i am worried that the unit they gave me might have been pre-production. Is there a way to find out? I read online that the problem with the usb pin used to happen with the pre production units. Any advice? Thanks alot. x

Dont stress about it mate, Nokia in the UK are pretty good at replacing the handset if the usb port has come out.

I got mine replaced like yourself via UPS, it took about a week before i got my new device.

I did attach the following link when i was filling out the collection form: http://discussions.nokia.co.uk/t5/Ma...ng/td-p/629019

The link clearly identifies nokia taking responsibility for the design flaw. Not sure about the pre-production device? My replacement phoned looked brand new so can't complain, as long as it works is what i live by

hehe:D

You could move your files to a microSD card, and then from there to a computer. Repeat as necessary.

Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues

There is a design flaw in N900, not to have the microUSB-port fixed better to the motherboard or to the case. A push through component would had been better.

But I wonder, is there also a practical design flaw in choosing microUSB-B connector as an international standard charger inlet in mobile phones?

microUSB-B should tolerate more (10 000) connect-disconnect cycles than mini-B, but human errors make µUSB actually more vulnarable.

Clearly the connector is so small, and almost seem like symmetrial if you are in the dark, drunken or farsighted without glasses. But it is not symmetrical of course. Trying to insert µUSB-B connector in a wrong way and using little force, easly can break the connector in the device.

Maybe micro-USB connectors should had been designded to be half way symmetrical. Maybe not working upside down, but not breaking anything if the mistake is made.

I wonder how many of these broken ports are partly caused by once or couple of times trying to put the connector 180 degreess upside-down?

The situation may get easier (or not) with micro-USB3, because there is that indent on the other side. Yet, I think in the standard could require coloring (black/white) to indicate which side of the microUSB-B- and USB3-micro-B-male-connectors is the up.

btw, I recommend to use white paint to mark the upperside of the current charger's µUSB-B male connector. I've used white repair lacquer for this job on all of my microUSB-B male connectors.

Just for the record:

I had the same issue ( usb port stopped working, but didn't come out yet), brought it to Nokia service center and got it back fixed (on warranty) after 2 weeks.

It seems they have replaced the complete mainboard, it has a new IMEI number now. (though the case is not new)

Has anyone had this problem even when only using cables that have been completely filed down? I've done this to my cables and don't get any resistance when plugging/unplugging them.

Make a backup, then follow these instructions to copy the backup file to your PC.

As for the warranty, check the paperwork that you got with the phone, you can probably take it into any Nokia service centre.

I've done the same, and I'm also curious.

(The data cables still concern me - despite being filed down they are still a relatively tight fit).

As far as I know, this isn't possible with the N900. You can export the contacts into vCard 2.1 and vCard 3.0 formats, if those are by any chance importable into your other phone.

You may also be able to use the "Transfer & Sync" option in Settings to transfer the lot over via bluetooth.

Whelp, I finally gave my phone in to NokiaCare and lo and behold I didnt even get a real excuse when it came back. Apparently the PCB was "water damaged" and couldnt be repaired.. even though the device still turns on and operates perfectly fine. Oh, and they also decided to lose the port that fell out. *rage*

Sigh, it's time to try and do the dodgey and get someone to solder on a new port. Failing that; get an android or something.

Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues

Dunno mine is now after months of usage still solid as a rock. My dog ran already into the cable and the phone flow like 3 meters, then the cable hold the phone and nothing really happened. I tried to put it in wrong already 100 of times and was really not nice to it when it made problems again.

So it seems to be still a specific model which is affected, or just bad luck.

Have mine for about 3 weeks (bought in switzerland). once it did only charge after unplugging and plugging again. I noticed, that taking out and putting in ist very stable. but the cable beeing inside can be moved together with the plug for about 2 mm up and down is this normal?

I have also got the same problem. Curiously I have not even dropped the device and it has been kept safe. At the moment I can´t get my N900 to charge at all.

It is a real pity just before getting USB-host...

Interesting. Just got my N900 back and was told it was not fixed as damage was caused by moisture damage which is not covered by warranty. And they brought my N900 back in a state worse than it was before I sent it. When I sent it I could connect to PC and transfer files. Now it does not connect at all.

Seems Nokia are now starting using the same excuse for this usb port issue. Really doubt I will ever get another of their products unless it is the most amazing device in history. It is a well documented issue that the there is a manufacturing defect with the usb ports on some N900s and for them to claim moisture damage as excuse not to fix is disgraceful

Possibly the moisture indicators are positive, but that alone is no grounds for voiding the warranty.
If they tried this stunt in Australia, I would take them to small claims court (no lawyers allowed), with plenty of evidence from this forum.
Unfortunately, I imported it from the US, so I'm at their mercy.
Is there any practical way for consumers to take sellers to court in the US over warranty disputes?

edit: actually, I think you have to take the retailer to court, for a statutory warranty claim. And statutory claims can be made later than the 12-month Nokia warranty lasts. Probably at least 2 years for an expensive phone.

Interestingly, Apple has also been accused of refusing to fix phones because of water damage, when the owner says that they weren't water damaged. See http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/10280237.stm
