Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues
My N900 will now only chrage via usb cable to PC, is this the same problem? When I plug in charger charging light comes on, but it doesnt charge...
I have an external battery charger, so can charge as I have two batteries.... Not sure if I will send it off or just put up with it. Got it via carphone warehouse, may get them to send it off..... |

I know my N97 was sent in for repair as my MicroUSB plug fell out when I took it out of the packaging (Yeah I think I got a refurb straight from Nokia). My N900 hasn't had any issues so far but I filled down all my plugs or used older plugs which don't have the massive clips on them. |
Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues
They accepted it and the current status says:
Your Nokia N900 device, serial number xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, was received for repair on 08/20/10. Unfortunately we were unable to repair your device and are currently awaiting delivery of a replacement device for you. I am not sure what this means or how long it takes, but seems promising. |
Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues
Been lurking around here for awhile learning about my N900....
But sad to say my new N900 I bought less than 3 months ago has it's USB port broken off. I returned it to my phone service provider (Optus) and after 2 weeks waiting, I have been told today the phone is "Physically damaged" and will not be covered under warranty. After much to and fro, I have been advised to call Nokia, in which Nokia customer service assured me it will be covered under warranty... They even gave me a reference number to give the local Nokia customer service center.... I was pretty happy with the outcome After driving close to 30mins to my nearest service center (only one in Perth, W.Australia), the service girl had a look at it, brought it to their tech guy, and came back telling me its a "Physical Damage" and wont be covered under warranty. I replied by telling her I have read in a few internet forum (including here and Nokia) that the USB breaking is a known issue among N900 users. her reply was: "Dont believe everything you hear on the internet" .... not happy  Her suggestion to me was the only way to fix the phone is to replace the board. and by doing so, the cost out of my pocket will be nearly the same as buying a new phone.... so.... she told me "Go buy a new phone"..... Unfortunately, after many years of using different mobile phones, I never had any hardware failures like this... ever... pretty disappointed with the quality and customer service. As I am still under contract with Optus (21 months left), it was fortunate Optus Customer service is willing to help out (even though I dont have phone insurance) by reducing some of my costs in getting a new phone. Unfortunately, I will be going back to an Iphone... I had such high hopes for this N900.... but alas, this may be my last Nokia phone ever... :( /rant |
Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues
You called nokia customer service and they PROMISED that you will get it under warranty. You went to Nokia service center where guy says that sorry no can do. Iīm sorry for you experiences and thatīs just sad.
Did you have any documents from Nokias own support forum (i think links are in this thread) where they admit this or from this thread or the name of person whit whom you talked in the phone? |
Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues
no... I did not have the link from Nokia support... but the customer support at the nokia service center was not even keen to check the reference number from the phone Customer service guy gave me... just some excuse like " THey only say that so you would come to the service center".... :(
and no, they were not keen on listening about what has been mentioned online about this issue.... "It looks like it was ripped out... so must be your fault" no name... as they always an oversea customer phone service people... so I got a reference number from him instead... |
Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues
I think you should at least make complain about how they treated you. Of course it looks like ripped. Thatīs the way how it comes out ffs.

Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues
omg... I just got off the phone with the Nokia Phone service.... and the guy is now telling me that "If Nokia care service center techniction say it is a physical fault, then it would not be under warranty"
even when I explained to him that all I do was "plug in and remove the usb cable everyday for charging, and there are no other "physical" damage" he said no warranty.... again, I tried to highlight that it is a known issue, he said the tech has the final say.... I even asked for his manager, he refused by saying it wont be covered by warranty either way.... wow... Nokia service at its best?? |
Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues
I do not know if itīs any help as we are "just" community site, but you should probably try to contact Texrat (look this thread) and tell your situation and ask for any hints.

Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues
I will be posting on the "official" Nokia forum, and hopefully I can get a response, or maybe a contact name/person I can email in Nokia Australia...
It is truely bad if Nokia admit to it being an issue, but yet refuse or advise their regional service centers... than it is just a recipe for disaster and easiest way to piss of their customers... .(loyal or new) bad bad bad :( thanks for being the "shoulder" for me to cry on about this problem... ;) |

About Nokia support. Here is official nokia forum and you can see that thread is stickied:
http://discussions.europe.nokia.com/...ces/bd-p/maemo Also read couple of pages this thread backwards at least and try to find any information that might help you. Good luck. |

However, I am now accumulating info on Care experiences for this problem, as requested by Nokia. I will write a new blog article soon to focus the effort; it will help if people spread the info virally once it's up. |

Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues
Ive had the USA N900 for about 4 months now. Ive been very careful in removing power adapters and usb cables from the phone. I am unable to charge anymore from the power adapter that came with the N900, but I still am able to use the usb cable to charge. I bought a 3rd party car charger and it is ify to charge the phone. I have to plug it in and out a few times to get the N900 to recognize(I believe this is a known problem but I am afraid of the stress it might cause by plugging in and out). I have not filed the prongs on any cord yet. I believe I will now. I will try another power adapter to see if its just bad, however I am very worried and concerned that the microusb connector might go bad and be removed. And if Nokia does not repair it if its still in warranty, they will lose another customer who is not willing to pay $600 on a phone and future phones that seems to be dwindling in official support and fixes.

Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues
A quick update on my situation:
After last Friday's unsuccessful attempt to get my N900 fixed under warranty. I rang Nokia care again to lodge a product complain. It turned out the local service center did not document his "Physical damage" result, so Nokia care asked me to bring the phone into their service center to assess properly... as I was not too happy with wasting my time driving there again, I requested for a postal option in which Nokia was covering the postal cost. However, after I have posted on the Official Nokia forum raising my issue, I have received 2 PMs from the Australian customer support. They both have received my case number, and my personal details; and they both assured me my case will be resolved. and all Australia's Nokia Care centers should have been notified of the warranty issue for the N900 (Guess I was unlucky to get the one specific tech who didnt read his memo) Anyway, I will need to post my phone to their center tomorrow, and hope that it wont take too long to repair/replace. |
Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues
Obvious I know, but I never :( If you value your data and the time you spent 'building' up and customising your phone and apps etc. then:
TAKE A REGULAR BACKUP !! ... do it now ! If you have a N900 then there is a good possibility that the usb data/charging port will become loose or detach and you'll have no means to access your phone/data/apps and with Nokia possibly offering a replacement handset under warranty and you losing everything. Thankfully I found a local Nokia Service Centre who re-soldered the micro USB for 25UKP and had my phone available the next day. Happy :) to have my N900 back and working, but unhappy  with Nokia' s poor design on the inadequate securing of the heavily used micro USB socket. |
Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues
My n900 has just stopped accepting that i have a lead connected to it (usb or mains charger).
Last time i used it with a lead was yesterday at around 3pm i copy/paste some pictures over to my work pc. Everything went fine no problems and then when it came to later on in the day i plugged the phone into my home pc,the phone didn't register that it was connected by usb at all and even the wall charger doesn't charge. On all my chargers and usb leads i had filed the teeth down so the connections were a looser fit and have had no problems at all with them. Any ideas anyone?? sorry guys, i haven't got time to go through this thread or use the search function due to my battery running out edit strange thing i have found, if i turn the phone off then plug the usb lead into the phone from my pc, it starts to charge showing the orange charging led then goes into a loop with no back light but showing the nokia splash screen and the booting dotted bar.i can turn the phone on and it boots fine but still will not charge. |
Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues
Any ideas guys ??
sorry to be a pain i don't have my n900 at the moment, i am charging the n900 battery through my old n96 :( |
Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues
That makes the 2 of us, my usb port is loose so I charge the battery via my trusty 5800xm. I will return to Nokia once all is backed up. Mr Elop has work to do for sure.

Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues
Another thing to point out is when the phone is switched off and i connect the USB lead the dim nokia screen comes up and for a few seconds the USB symbol shows up in the top right corner and then the phone loops with the dim nokia screen and booting dots.
Does this show that its not the usb socket that is the problem but could be software related and a complete reflash could solve the issue? |
Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues
Today I discovered the left side of my usb port was tilted by about 1mm, and wouldn't charge without a slight press on the plug, I have gently bent it back down slightly and I can now charge, Suggestions? Epoxy? Could I open the N900 and resolder the pad or do they generally ruin the solder pads on the pcb? I bought my N900 Back in February from Newegg.com So it should still be under warranty, but from what this post has shown I probably wont get anything done by a RMA.

Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues
iRealized this morning that my ENTIRE charger point has GONE!
Is this covered by warranty as it wasn't a result of mistreatment? iRead earlier on that apparently it has something to do with the early models of the phone and I was one of the first to receive one.. Any verification on this? Thanks for your help! EDIT: WOAH just realized the charger point is still on the USB, its not even lost inside the phone.. This is messed up =( |

Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues
How the hell am I supposed to fix this? Do I have to send it in under warranty?
I already read a thread about someone else in Canada going through HELL over this. |
Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues
I swear if Nokia doesn't repair this I will write an angry letter to an exec and NEVER buy another Nokia Product as long as I live.

Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues
God dammit. Mine just came off. Again. That's the second time within 8 months. Last time it broke I got a brand new device, and it lasted for 5 months (the first one did just 3)
I'm speechless. |

did you did anything to prevent it from happening? like getting rid of the teeth on the usb chargers and cable? this is a 100% n900 fail (in your case) |
Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues
I got rid of all teeth on every charger and usb lead and mine has still broke, it hasn't broke off or even become loose but my phone will not charge or accept that it is connected by any lead,
Apart from when it is switched off and i insert a lead the dim nokia logo appears and a usb symbol shows top right for 3 secs and and then shows the booting dots then switches off and then loops over and over again doing the same thing. I believe these are classic broken microusb socket symptoms but i haven't had it confirmed yet. |
Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues
The fact that your device detects that the lead is plugged in while switched off (even if it doesn't charge properly) makes me wonder if your problem is something else - does anyone know?

i have tried to get some info regarding this but i haven't got any answers yet. I believe that there are a few pins which connect the socket to the main board and i suppose if just 1 pin breaks that some signals may still be received through the other pins. I have had no other problems with the phone leading up to this fault occurring it just happened out of the blue. |

Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues
If i open up my n900 carefully and inspect the usb socket and put it back together carefully without doing anything to it, can this be spotted afterwards and can this void my warranty?
|
Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues
An experienced technician can do. Screws go out easily after first disassembly work. Also fingerprints as usual will reveal "housebreaking"
