Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues
i'd already voted for "no problems so far" in the poll, well a few weeks ago the port fell out. took it to vodafone who sent it to nokia, 2weeks later new handset (kept the batt and cover from old one though) wish it was as straightforward for the rest of you guys. 2 weeks without my n900 was a killer but i'd hate to have all the hassle some of u have with it. must say trying to track it through vodafone was awful. they genuinely have no idea where your phone is when you want to know. even told me to go pick it up when it wasn't there.

Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues
Hi Festivalnut.
In hindsight, I too should have taken it to vodafone as opposed to doing a merry dance with the Carphonewarehouse. Still they have said they sent it to Nokia and its come back BER! So am not holding out for Customer Support to do much if Nokia repairs have said BEP. Its v annoying :-( |

Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues
well.. 2 things u can do when got a replacement set.. 1, grind the hook at charger and usb cable.. another 1 maybe void ur warranty, take the back casing off.. put a rubber on top of the micro usb connector, then put back the back casing. (then 2nd not suggested if u dont want to void ur warranty) ;) just my 2 cent

1 making strong soldering in the lateral parts of the usb (adding more soldering) 2 using some glue 3 making one more soldering (see the pictures that someone posted here in the back pages) 4 changing the motherboard... but the problem will not resolve |
Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues
Big question though, Santiago: has anyone successfully done any or all of the first 3--which we geeks should be able to do on our own, of course--and then, if it were sent in to Nokia for something else under warranty, they wouldn't notice? This is the primary reason I haven't done anything like this to mine yet.

Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues
hi everyone, i had my n900 replaced around 1 month ago after it was taken in for a repair through carphone warehouse, it was a month later when the store rang me to say i could collect, they had no report or anything just said they gave me a new phone. i was happy with the usb on this phone it seamd a lot more sturdy for some reason, only this morning i pluged my usb charger in to my laptop and i heard the flaming usb port sort off rip off the board, the usb is still solidish on the motherboard but again will not charge, if i sort off wiggle it and hold it in a funny position the light comes on but will not stay on,
my question is, will i be aloud to take it in for repair again, only the first time the phone was a year old and only a month old this time, i did have a n97 mini with the same usb and you could litteraly swing it round with the cable plugged in it was that solid. i am cautious with plugging it in espacialy after the first time. all this hastle is really frustrating. will i be able to ask for a different phone from carphone warehouse as i am really really not happy with the poor design off the charger??? my new phones specks are nokia type rx-51 made in korea 356938/03/671803/0 code 0560826 :( what a bugger |
Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues
Ok, I'll be the next to add 1 to this list of people experiencing problems.
Have had my N900 from new for about 5 months. I noticed recently that the USB port seemed slightly more recessed than usual, but as long as you carefully located the port, it was not a problem. More recently I started to find it would only charge in certain positions, and then the day before yesterday, the whole usb port just fell out. Not sure what to do with it now, as I got it as a present. Hmmm, will Nokia UK take it? Duncan |
Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues
One year and 10 days after getting my N900 the USB failed. nokia's webpage says of my IMEI "support not available."
I'm in the US. Anyone know how I can proceed? How much repair will cost? I'm sure this is answered in the thread, but beyond my search abilities.... |
Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues
After one year of usage, my N900 has developed a peculiar charging problem.
It only charges from the computer USB charging but does not charge from the AC charging adapter, I have tried with 2 ac chargers and both times the same problem. The charging LED feebly lights up but there is no charging even after a number of number of hours. Any ideas if this is a software problem or hardware problem, do I just send it to nokia service centre? thanks ahead for any info. |
Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues
Hi zenit!
Are you still using nokia ac-10 1200mAh micro-usb charger or some other model trough the CA-146C micro-usb adapter? In this case the problem might be insufficient charging power. |

My phone is back... Under warranty... They repaired my phone, but the usb port is still easy to broke... they made a new support to protect the usb port, but it isnt a good work, it can be damaged again... Nokia... Leave the phones and go to work the ground...

While it's always possible I somehow mis-entered the IMEI twice befor calling. I know another time I was erroneously querying the "Repair Status" page instead of the "Warrenty Verification" page. I still ggot the feeling I was out of Warrenty until I said "broken USB." |
having problems with charging
i have to restart my phone everytime i plugin the charger, otherwise it will connect in usb mode and will not charge. is it a hardware problem or do i have to install the OS again?

Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues
My N900 worked really well for 13 months. The usb port didn't come off but it stopped working. I could not connect it by usb cable or charger.
I took the phone to nokia care. After 2 weeks my phone was ready. It was changed to new one. Now I am happy and besides I do not have any white spots on the screen. |

Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues
I'm wondering how Nokia will handle replacement devices that fail. My original warranty is up, and I'm a month into my replacement warranty, and my new USB port is already finnicky.

I don't have my original device warranty, will they still fix it for me?

Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues
I had my USB port broken just one day before my warranty expired. I shipped it immediately to the repair center in Alabama (Palco Telecom). It was couple days before Christmas so it hasn't got there for a week. Once it was there I got an email saying the phone is no longer under warranty. I called them up and explained to them that when I sent the phone it was still under warranty so it should be repaired as the delay was not my fault. They asked me to send over the receipts for the mailing showing the date which I did and then they repaired it under the "Good will program". I just got the phone back (after 3 weeks) and it seems to be working fine now.
What is weird is that I haven't tripped over the cable or anything like that. It was plugged in to charge, which it did till it was like 80% charged then stopped. Nothing after that made it charge again. After reading up on the problem it was clear that the charging chip was fried as it only made a quick yellow blink on the phone when the charger was connected. If it would not have been under sort-of warranty it would have cost $75 to repair. |
Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues
USB port no longer works. It seems to have dented in a weird way. Charging externally is a PITA. Goodbye N900, its been nice knowing you.

usb
I've been really carefull to care of the usb port for nearly a year now but I just pulled the usb port out of my n900. I want sympathy for as long as my battery lasts. F+4k bollo+cks. It's umder warrenty, just, but +#-)(/€"'\&!86\/-.

Re: usb
If only nokia could fit the normal 2mm plug in the N900 like most nokia phones.
This USB problem is one of the reasons that i put a 2mm plug in the mugen cover, that and the much faster charge rate. But im thinking about gluing around the USB on the mainboard just to make double sure that i never experience this. |
Re: usb
A good workaround is to file the usb cable's teeth, I recommend that to all my friends that have a phone with a micro-usb port and they thanks me because it reduct friction when you disconnect usb.
It should reduce the risk of having the usb port falling out, especially on the N900. |
Re: usb
dont complain too much, brand new phone instead of a year old one, backup all your stuff now, find a replacement phone to last you a week, relax.

On the plus side, there have been many reports of the N900 simply being swapped for a new one when they have been sent for repair with this fault, so hopefully I'll have a new one when I get it back. |

Does anyone know a repair service that will use a proper IR soldering machine to repair the port? |
Re: Problems with N900 USB port becoming broken / loose and resulting warranty & repair issues
Maybe someone could take a dental x-ray of the USB pad area, better if the USB port has already fallen off. If the port area has no traces there is no reason that two or four holes could be drilled and one or two solid copper wires passed over the USB port pulled tight and soldered down to the port top, this will work especially well if there is good ground plane on the opposite side. I have used this before on several non-SM radio build projects to mount or strengthen components.
I am hoping to find a smoking deal on a broken N900(no way I could afford a new or working one) and I think epoxying down a 2mm charge port will make using the USB in host mode while keeping the battery and USB device powered much easier without weird Y cables. Of course that still leaves the problem of getting the charge logic to accept power without shorting the data pins. The plan is to get a 2mm power port and epoxy it on upside down and direct solder wires running to a convenient bit of ground and the +power from a SM cap near the left corner of the USB port. Does anyone have experience with switching to miniUSB as mentioned up the thread? With the fragility even after a fix would anyone suggest charging while cycling?(I have no car but strong legs) I have a handlebar mount phone clamp similar to a car handsfree mount and a hub dynamo electrical power system with a clean 5vDC filtered USB electrical output that I have used on my current phone and my very old Zaurus. |
