Simple Storage increase?
 

I have not yet gotten my 870/770 - I am actually waiting to see what will happen with the new hardware (although honestly I don't think I can wait that long :D ). That being said, I have been looking at various solutions to storing maps (GPS app), as well as movies music, etc. I stumbled upon this device, and with my limited knowledge of how the 770 works, does this device look as thought it should "seamlessly" -- whatever that means, work with the 770/870?

Any advice/prior knowledge would be appreciated.

Thoughtfix mentioned this earlier in another thread. It looks real interesting, but the problem is that it doesn't actually exist yet, it's more like a marketing concept, so we don't really how and if it would jibe with the 770...

PS: one more battery to worry about, of course :-)

Well, I understand the battery issue, but my thought was that this is only used as a vault, to "trade" data with the 770, such that it would be available for moving files, rather than constantly streaming (of course, that would be a method also if it were plugged into the mains, etc.)

AFAICT, the only advantage this vapourware device has, is that it has many different ways to connect to it. But WiFi HDD containers, even portable ones, aren't exactly hot spanking new.

The same goes for USB harddisks; I have a minuscule "Store&Play" Packard-Bell 120 GB USB disk that can connect effordlessly to my NokiLLO. Well, it would, if I bothered to build myself a powered hub, that is.

(The Store&Play is neat, BTW: it comes with a remote and an AV-cable and allows you to play media files directly on a tv. And 120 GB is a lot of DivX)

I just ordered one of these from woot.com the other day...should be here in a few days, and one of the first things I will try it with is the 770...

It's a USB "bridge" device, allowing you to transfer data between any two mass storage devices via USB. It also supports direct iPod-to-iPod transfers without having to resync, but I am interested to see if I can transfer files from a thumbdrive or harddrive to the 770 without using a computer. It should work fine, and the two USB ports even provide full power simultaneously to any device to charge it via it's lithium-ion battery or included AC adapter...

Pretty cool looking little device, very handy if it works as advertised...

Well, that is pretty cool. Does the 770 use a fat32 filesystem? or are those things taken care of with the operating system of the 770? I would see that as the possible hang-up with this operation. Would be very interested in if it works.

Well, I finally got my Hitch device in, and I can tell you that it works great with the 770! I transferred files to and from the MMC card, and used my 160GB ext hard drive, a 2GB flash drive, and my 60GB iPod photo as the senders and receivers. I haven't tried iPod-to-iPod music mode transfer yet, but I will tonight.

When the 770 is hooked to one side of the Hitch, it thinks it is hooked to a PC, putting the USB symbol up in the tray. After a few seconds, the Hitch lists the directory structure on it's built-in LCD. From there, you just select what you are copying and which direction you want to go.

Awesome little device, and this solves the problem of needing some type of powered hub to hook storage devices to the 770, since the Hitch has its own internal battery. Any FAT formatted storage device (which is basically almost all of them) will work...

I can transfer files from my Treo to my 770...from my iPod to my Treo...from a multi-format card reader to the 770...digital camera to 770...all without needing to hook up to a computer, all in one step...

Much easier and faster than using Bluetooth and having to pair devices and then *hope* they can communicate with each other and share data...

Yes, the 770's MMC card is a FAT filesystem...this is what lets you transfer files to and from your Windows or Mac computer

Yes, the Sima Hitch is VERY cool. However, it costs $80ish on Ebay. Does anyone know of a way to transfer directly from a USB mass storage device (like my Ipod) without having to use another device like the Hitch?

Really?! So you can use it to transfer from your thumbdrive or ipod? Do you have to hack the 770/n800 in order to use it? No other power supply needed (like a hacked powered USB hub)? Since there is no screen on it, how do you select what you are transferring to the 770/n800?

Well, I haven't tried this on my 770 (only on my PSP) so I don't know if it needs a Hub. But the device itself it battery powered so I don't think it needs the hub. As for file selection, it has 5 different buttons ranging from Copy, Music, Pictures, Videos, Software, and ALL. Unfortunately, you can't choose what exactly to copy. But for the price, it's worth it in my opinion.

Interesting. Here's a question:

if the device is hooked up to a 60gb ipod, and you transfer using the "music" button, what gets transferred? Does it just start transferring until the recipient's storage capacity fills up? Say you had 6 videos stored on a thumbdrive and only had room on the recipient device for 3 videos. How do you specify which videos to transfer?

Anyone else try this device on a 770/n800?

Sorry, I have no idea. I'm assuming it will transfer the first 3 files in either alphabetical order or the most recent files.
