[BUG] N900 VOIP Mobile calls incompatibility

Has this bug ever been discovered by anyone?

I used Google Voice, when somebody called my GVoice #, the SIP rang first then when the phone rang, both got disconnected.

And BTW, any Google Voice App for N900 yet?

Here are some experiments I took.

#1: In the middle of a VOIP call-out, my friend called my cell phone #, two lines both survived.

#2:In the middle of a VOIP call-out, my friend called my Gizmo5 # using Gizmo software. Two lines remained alive.

#3: In the middle of a VOIP call-out, my friend called my GVoice #. because VOIP is faster than mobile, it did come in first and co-existed with VOIP call-out for a while (3 seconds?), then when the mobile call-in came, two lines-in (VOIP and Mobile) both disconnected. But VOIP call out still remained.

#4: In the middle of a VOIP call-out, use mobile to call-out, both lines remained.

#5: My friend called my GVoice #, VOIP call-in first came, lasted for a while, then when the mobile call-in came, they both disconnected.

#6: My friend called my Gizmo# using Gizmo, then used her cell phone called my cell phone #. It directly went into voice mail. And N900 showed missed call from her mobile. But the Gizmo call remained.

#7: My friend called my cell phone # using her cell phone, then called my Gizmo# using Gizmo. Gizmo prompted "not available". And N900 showed missed call from Gizmo. But the mobile call remained.

#8: In the middle of a mobile call-out, my friend called my Gizmo# using Gizmo. It got rejected. But mobile call-out remained.

The guess of #3 and #5 is that, when the second line (mobile call-in) came in, it got rejected by N900 and returned "busy" to GVoice. So GVoice stopped the both lines.

P.S. Neither my friend nor me answered any of those calls. Meaning it was only ring tones.

Yes, take a look at DialCentral (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=29347), and also the author is working on something that integrates with the N900 telephony stack.

Are you using Google Voice alone, or Google Voice "with SIP service from Gizmo5 ( or other SIP provider)"? From what I can tell, GVoice "alone", does not provide a VoIP circuit/trunk, and uses "call back numbers" or "existing phone lines" to connect calls.

Re: CAN'T have SIP and mobile at the same time

I'm using GV with built-in Skype and DialCentral. Seems to work good except you can't do DTMF tones with Skype. So no way to use call screening with it and GV. But I also don't have voice service on T-mobile....data only, so can't say I've run into trouble of both cell and SIP calls occurring at the same time.

I've tried my E71, it doesn't work either. So it's the problem of Google then??

Yes! This is exactly the issue I ran into today, and would *love* to see resolved. Thanks so much for your experiments.

Quick question: What do you mean, by "VOIP" call-out? Is that using Skype, or Gizmo's paid service?

I'm not sure about that. One more datapoint to add to your investigation: When it happens to me, the caller will successfully leave me a Tmobile voicemail and not a Google Voice one.

In order for that to happen, I believe GV would have to successfully be connecting the caller to the voicemail account -- so GV is not just dropping both lines. The lines stop ringing because GV sees that the call has been answered (by the voicemail) and is now maintaining the connection between caller and voicemail.

The real issue, then, is that the N900 is sending the call to voicemail. I guess it just can't currently support simultaneous SIP and mobile calls? Or maybe it can, and I misunderstood what you meant by "VOIP" in your experiments. Maybe it's a bug.

OMG, haven't gotten back here for a long time. VOIP calls are Gizmo's paid service.

Hope more people can get involved in this.

Re: CAN'T have SIP and mobile at the same time

This seems to be your combination of call supplier. I use sipgate and have no issuse whatsoever in this situation. I can have calls coming in with either SIP or Cell then another at same time ringing with the other and all handled as expected.

Can you be more specific? Like in which cases I mentioned above you've tried?? Thank you!

Re: CAN'T have SIP and mobile at the same time

I just tried sipgate with google voice, I added it to my forwarding phone successfully, but same thing happened like using Gizmo. So i don't think this is the supplier's problem. It must be something to do with phone.

Re: CAN'T have SIP and mobile at the same time

I am having this same issue. SIPgate and T-Mobile. When my wife calls me at work with my GV number, my SIP rings, but as soon as I hit ACCEPT, both calls disconnect. Actually, 50-50 chance whether I get 1 missed call or 2.

Re: CAN'T have SIP and mobile at the same time

Wifi.

I seem to remember hearing there's some way to change the number of rings before voicemail picks up on t-mobile. I also seem to remember hearing that it's different for prepaid than for regular t-mobile. I wonder if a couple of extra rings would help?

Re: CAN'T have SIP and mobile at the same time

This is exactly what I was planning on doing when I received my phone (forward all calls to my tmobile prepaid, and sipgate account, and then answer depending on if I had wifi or not.

Is there some way to ignore regular phone calls when on wifi?

I don't know how to code for the n900, but a simple switch on the desktop to change which devices calls are forwarded to would be awesome. I could write something to change which devices are active in google voice, but I have no clue how to make a button on the desktop run these scripts...

Re: CAN'T have SIP and mobile at the same time

I've been performing more experiments with this today, looking at more configurations in GV and on the phone, switching between CallCentric and SipGate, etc. I called my GV number with my wife's phone. I noticed that the disconnect happens right at the moment when my T-Mobile voicemail kicks in.

Anybody else notice this? I'm hoping that if we all experience this it could be a clue.

The disconnect is definitely happening right after my t-mobile voicemail picks up.

I am using a t-mobile and sipgate account. One starts ringing, and then when the other call comes in, they both disconnect, and the caller is redirected to my t-mobile voicemail.

Is there somewhere to report this bug?

Re: CAN'T have SIP and mobile at the same time

I have a workaround where I disable my cell phone radio whenever I am on my home network. This is accomplished through a script in /etc/network/if-up.d/ and /etc/network/if-down.d/ I can post them if anyone is interested.

This makes it so only my sip phone rings when I am at home, and my cell phone rings elsewhere (and has the added bonus of saving power when I am at home). Does anyone know how to disable an account using a command?

I'm interested in your script. It sounds like it would suit my needs.

Re: CAN'T have SIP and mobile at the same time

I've done some more work on this. I changed my voicemail timeout to 30 seconds, and that didn't work. I then called up T-Mobile Customer Care and had them disable my voicemail. That didn't work. Once I turn my phone off it goes straight to voicemail. I think that's what's happening. It's exactly what happens when I press "ignore." I put the SIM card in my spare phone and that's exactly what happened. When I press Ignore, it goes to voicemail, answering T-Mobile and hanging up my SIP numbers.

Re: CAN'T have SIP and mobile at the same time

Users, do you have the "press 1 to accept the call" option enabled? If so then it sounds like Tmobile is up to something funny not your phone. If not, try and enable that option so that it will not give the voicemail priority unless 1 is being pressed. You should always get your google voice voicemail.

Re: CAN'T have SIP and mobile at the same time

OK, I called T-Mobile Customer Care again. I told the guy that I wanted my voicemail deactivated to the point that if I hit Reject on my handset, the phone would keep ringing. It took us A LONG TIME, and it took him a lot of tries, but to his credit he didn't give up. He did say that part of the problem was that I was on prepaid, because for some reason the voicemail is different. I didn't ask him to elaborate.

Anyway, he finally did something magical that made it so when he called me (we tested this while I was on my cheapo handset) and I pressed Reject, it kept ringing on his end. It finally seemed to work.

So I popped the SIM back into my wondrous N900 and tested it various times. I tried with my landline about 6 times. I tried it from my wife's cell once. It worked every time.

Someone else test this please. I'll have my brother and some buddies call me and I'll let y'all know what happens.

Do both calls (sip and gsm) ring simultaneously for you now, or does just one come through?

Re: CAN'T have SIP and mobile at the same time

They both ring but only SIP answers. At least I'm pretty sure that's what happens. SIP rings first then when I answer, missed call shows up as cell missed call.

Re: CAN'T have SIP and mobile at the same time

Question, to all. On your phone do you have your GV # as the voicemail #? The only time my TMO voicemail picks up is if I am out of area? which is never! You might look at your conditional voicemail settings. I don't forward any of my SIP accounts to GV, so I might be off base. There should be 3 conditions for your voicemail i have the 1st two go to GV and the last go to TMO.

Do you happen to know who you spoke to at t-mobile?

I ended up enabling pressing 1 to pickup the call, and this appears to have fixed the issue for me (even though this is a little bit annoying to have to do). My sip account picks it up first, and the cell phone call shows up as a missed call.

Re: CAN'T have SIP and mobile at the same time

I just used the web chat to talk to someone at t-mobile. They disabled my voicemail in such a way that if I reject the call, or miss the call, it just gives a busy signal instead of going to voicemail. I tried this with google voice, and it works perfectly.

I asked how other people can reference this, and she said that she just turned off unconditional call forwarding. I hope this helps some other people.

I don't know who I talked to. I had to call twice before I got it right. Unconditional Call Forwarding settings seems to be what he did, as in the above post.

Re: CAN'T have SIP and mobile at the same time

I finally figured out how to write a script that toggles sip on/offline, and changes the enabled phones in google voice for me. So now I can click a button when I leave home, and click it again when I arrive back at home. I made a queenbeecon button with it.

Now I just need to automate this based on the network I am connected to.

I will try to post it here in the next few days when I have more time.

anyone knows how to play with the settings of the sip application?
i need to add a filed to send the caller id (symbian phones have a "public username field")

thank you!
