i came to these forums to learn and hopefully contribute, not see your layman interpretation of the N900 and its flaws/strengths. youre probably one of the smartest trolls ive seen around here as far as tactics go, and if youre not doing it on purpose then you sir are a social ******. im really hoping thats the case. anyhow, ****off and good riddance.

narcist. nothing more, nothing less. this guy wouldn't see the truth even when he's said it himself. iphone users are delusional, internet nerds and trolls are narcists. so here I am pouring more gasoline to the fire. :P

OK mate, honestly, who goes around telling people that he probably earns more than them and has a better education for no reason at all, and then follows it up by stating that a thread on a forum is his own and lays down the rules of what mus essentially be described as war???

Please try to keep the discussion civilized eh.

You say you choose the topics to get traffic so that you get answers, what exactly do you want answered in this thread?

Re: OrangeBox is a troll...and you are so wrong

[rant]
I'm almost inclined to put in a brainstorm that suggests we change this site from talk.maemo.org to talk.orangebox.org. While I can certainly understand the "if you don't like it, don't reply" mentality, it isn't really fair when we aren't given other options. Consider this analogy:

A group of vegetarians are marooned on a barren, desert island overpopulated by animals. They are starving, but they complain about there only being animals to eat. One could argue that they can stop complaining and just eat the plants they find, but with the infrequency at which they stumble upon foliage. Can you truly be that offended when said vegetarians try to correct the problem of over-population in order to stimulate growth for something that is more in-keeping with their culture?

Failing understanding the above analogy, let me (re)introduce you to a technical programmers are familiar with: duck-typing. If it looks like a duck, talks, like a duck, etc, it's a duck. Therefore, you can only expect to be treated like an "immature, arrogant, troll" until you stop exhibiting behavior that helps classify you as such . Another thought: as much as you apparently strive for attention, perhaps your name should have been BlackHole and not OrangeBox?
[/rant]

Frustrations aside, I generally don't make such public criticisms of an individual, but considering this topic is all about you, I dare say that it is on topic.

This stupid arse thread gets more attention then what we should be paying attention to like
first impression threads
game port threads
why is adobe monopoly on flash 10 tolerated threads
ui improvement suggestion threads
bug threads
optified or not app threads
Come on guys.... ignore iphone distraction threads and lets get on with it making this a better device.
I paid 550 for this, lets get on with discussing how to improve it. Ignore Iphone closed source locked down view.

step 1: stop replying to it,
step 2: warn new people of it

outcome: it will go away

it is simple, guys

The irony is that everyone offering that advice is contributing to the thing they want stopped.

And really, that advice only works in theory. Not once in around 15 years of visiting and moderating forums have I ever seen it actually work. If "troll warriors" don't bump the threads, the troll/attention-seeker will.

The only thing I've ever seen work is repetitive nuking. Ultimately a troublemaker will move on.

Heh. Funny guy.

There is another subtle tactic that can work, and some people in these Boxy threads have been using it. Let's see if anyone can figure it out. :D

I don't really care if it stops or not, but how exactly am I contributing? Just curious.

You have been visiting and moderating forums for around 15 years? With what? Gopher? And you have THAT advice to give? I am a bit sceptical of that.

I was using the internet for US department of defense purposes in the late 80s to early 90s before the web was rolled out. AOL and Compuserve also predate the web as we know it; I was an AOL moderator and heavy Compuserve user way, way back. Also used bulletin boards in the good old days.

And I'm curious as to why you don't understand the truth and value in what I said. Maybe missing the irony explains it, though.

Because IMHO there is none. As I said I have never seen a flame war ending up in the troll going away and I have been into Newsgroups (moderated and non moderated) since 92.

Thus the term "don't feed the troll"

Ok. You're missing the point, but I'm not going to argue with you. That would just be more ironic. ;)

Re: OrangeBox is a troll...and you are so wrong

Texrat, I understand irony well. You don't understand that simply you have a different notion of what "feeding a troll" is to what I have. IMO, "bumping" the thread it started isn't feeding it, as I am not replying to it, but rather giving helpful advice to others on how to make it stop and make this, its last thread.

I don't understand why you think I would argue with you. Maybe because of your subtle attemt to insult me? I have been around way to long to byte that. :D

I wasn't attempting to insult you at all. I was just perplexed by your replies. Still am. Especially since you don't get why thread bumping is certainly a means of feeding a troll (or, in this case, attention-seeker). And yes, I'm well aware of the irony in my own bumps... but I have another agenda going. Just waiting for mullf to identify it. :D

I can tell by your replies, though, that something isn't clicking. But maybe that is MY fault and again, I'm not gonna argue.

However, I'd love to see at least one example of where there really was a simple, effective solution to trolling or spamming, especially ignoring being that simple solution. I just have not once seen it actually work. I have, however, seen persistent thread deletion and banning ultimately succeed-- despite the usual resilience of offenders. Sooner or later the work/reward ratio doesn't cut it and they find another haunt.

I've seen thread refactoring work, too... until someone naively resurrects the original "point"...

Banning works, I agree, but as I said, it doesn't seem to be an option as mods here seem to be tolerating the troll.

I am not sure how I can show you "one example" of a troll leaving after being killfiled by everyone in a NG. I have seen it done hundreds of times in newsnet. I am surprised you haven't but I am not going to call you a liar.
