MSN Messenger. 3 ways to get it.

number 1. Pidgin supported protocols plugin
2. MSN protocol plugin for maemo 5
3. Extra protocol plugins for maemo 5

all in extras devel.

which one uses the least amount of power?

i myself have used haze (pidgin is the same i think) and this works perfect. no useless stuff anywhere, just the extra msn button, works great and all, but it does drains the battery quite rapidly. could be the data connection as well but..

anyone have any experiences on the other plugins?

Re: MSN Messenger. 3 ways to get it.

I tried account-plugin-butterfly today from extras-testing and found it working.
for some reasson, I got some contacts with no name (possibly they did not have names in my messenger).

Apart from that, I got most of my other contacts (I had only about 50 contacts in all).

I tried searching "haze" but could not find it (is it same as hermez?).

Anyway, I got my MSN stufff working woth "account-plugin-butterfly"
(not sure if it drains battery faster as yet to use it more)..

Msn-pecan came out recently: http://felipec.wordpress.com/2009/12...k-integration/

According to the author, it is more stable and efficient than haze and butterfly.

Or use Jabber and add your MSN contacts to Jabber

I have been using haze too (didn't notice any drastic battery drain, but I wasn't that much online either)...

I have switched to butterfly now as it seems to be the "default" for Maemo 5... (?)

There is one annoying problem with butterfly though; If You delete a contact it isn't deleted from the server.

In fact the contacts I'm talking about don't even show up using haze (as I deleted them a long time ago). They aren't present on the MSN Live site, and don't show up in any other MSN client.

I'm not sure where the problem lies, but the maintainer of butterfly should have a look at the code haze uses since that works... ;)

I have created a bug report regarding this -> https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7375

EDIT -> There is already a bug report for this on FreeDesktop.org -> https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=19903

....Is there something that doesn't use a integration with the rubric? a stand-alone app that doesn't make new entry in it...I really hate to have new fields mixed up with important phone number&co...

Hi. I'm the author of msn-pecan, and actually I wrote the one in libpurple too (telepathy-haze uses that).

@unkno is correct, msn-pecan should perform better than haze, at least I haven't seen any significant battery drain.

If there's any feature that you want, you can add and vote for them here.

Re: MSN Messenger. 3 ways to get it.

I've been using Extra protocol plugins doe Maemo 5 in the Extras-Devel and it currently supports yahoo, AIM, msn(haze),ICQ, & more. seems to work very well with haze and battery drain doesnt seem to be as bad as the account-plugin-butterfly.

Re: MSN Messenger. 3 ways to get it.

jabber for msn, yahoo and what not. i kept jabber connected the whole night and no effect on battery. before that i tried pidgin, amsn but they are bulky, slow and battery drainers. i love built-in support for jabber. i can use msn, yahoo and other chat clients from my contact list now. there is a thread for it. search for "jabber"

Re: MSN Messenger. 3 ways to get it.

Does jabber require you to set up the MSN transport on your own server or what?

jsomby 2010-01-02 12:38

Re: MSN Messenger. 3 ways to get it.

If you make your own jabberserver you must have msn gateway/transport in there to make sure msn will work. Otherwise it wont.

There's a lot of free jabber servers where is msn gateway installed.

ruskie 2010-01-02 13:49

Re: MSN Messenger. 3 ways to get it.

You can use ANY jabber server that provides a jabber transport. That's the beauty of jabber.

I at one time had a @jabber.org account but used jabber transports on jabber.no :)

You can do the same :)

Re: MSN Messenger. 3 ways to get it.

The problem I am facing right now is that no matter what solution I use, i always get all my contacts showing up in my contact list.
Now I know that this is intended, however with a few hundred people on each service (icq/msn/etc.), and without support for groups things get a bit confusing when navigating the contact lists.

Best case would be, to only have certain contacts showing up, or only those who I know in real-life (meaning those I merged /I have a phone number for).

I haven't tried the jabber transport solution yet, but is something along those lines possible with it ?
Any other suggestions ?

Re: MSN Messenger. 3 ways to get it.

Why are there already 3 protocol plugins for msn?
Wouldnt it be better to have just 1 that works really great? So combine the efforts?

of the 3 (pecan, haze and butterfly) only 1 works for me and thats haze.

the last one butterfly , did work before but with version 0.7 i cant get it to work.

But now i have all my msn accounts double :( and i have to merge the contacts again...
I guess if you delete an account it is not ok just to delete all the contacts information that related with it because when you reinstall it you have that info again. But it would be nice if you delete an account that it asks what it should do with the contact information that is already stored in the contacts.. So that i can say you can delete it..

I'm only using haze too... And it works well for me... ;)

Pecan doesn't work at all, and butterfly imported lots of contacts which I had already deleted (some years ago) -> https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7375

I haven't deleted the contacts that "belong" to butterfly (MSN) plugin so I still have them double "MSN" (butterfly) + "MSN (Haze)", because I'm guessing butterfly will be the winner in the end... ;)

anyone any idea when a final version is coming to extras?

Re: MSN Messenger. 3 ways to get it.

OK has anyone out here tried "Pidgin protocol plugin for conversation and contacts".... I really want to give it a go but I'm terrified of using anything in "devel" (and testing) because of all the warnings on these threads. I'm not a Linux poweruser nor do I know how to reflash this bad boy if something goes wrong.

anyone try it? Is it stable? does it really connect to MSN, QQ, AIM, IRC, etc and show up in contacts/conversations.....?

DrWilken 2010-01-03 14:59

Re: MSN Messenger. 3 ways to get it.

That's what I'm using (with MSN - the "haze" plugin (it automatically installs this))... Haven't had any problems besides MSN disconnecting now and then, but that's no guarantee... ;)

Re: MSN Messenger. 3 ways to get it.

HRZ.

In my oppinion this app you are talking about is at the moment the only way to go.

At the moment just the best available.
Contacts of MSN who havnt been online their email adresses appear instead of 'no name'.
Fully integrated.

The others do not have this.

Go for it.

That's true, I was using a development image that had a new telepathy-glib and there was no problem there. Anyway, I found the problem on an official image and it's now fixed and released. Please try again.

Been using a msn transport with jabber, seems to be the least battery intensive of all the other options described in this thread.

Is there any way to block messages from people not on my contacts list though? Been getting spam messages and it is a bit annoying at times...
