This thread is quite good example of people who surely know what is best for other people too. How in world you can be so sure? I wouldn't make any comment because I would need at least 100 people and scientific study before I can say anything. You see world from little perspective. There is so many people living in different countries and using different level of technology.

hmm reminds me of some distros forum where couple of developers tough that they know what is best for other users by thinking only their own needs and "knowing" that its right and most efficient way..talking about key to unsuccess. I Wonder why these kind of people never make any good business..

Because to use email you need a dataplan. And a lot of users with pay-as-you-go sims don't have a dataplan. In fact, data on pay-as-you-go in the UK is prohibitively expensive. Remember, the phone companies charge a flat rate to send an MMS and nothing to recieve it. For email, they get to charge both sender and receiver.

On the other hand, it costs Granny nothing to recieve an MMS pic of the grandchildren. And should she ever get clever enough to want to send us a shot of herself living it up at the tea dance, it will come cheaply out of her pay-as-you-go credit without any problem.

Damn, now I miss my Granny. :(

Regardless of the merits of MMS, MMS and MMS interworking between cellular networks is a part of the 3G cellular standard...

So you are trying to tell other people how to spend their money?

that's like saying "if every car could have the looks and engine of a ferrari..."

well, it would rule. the fact of the matter is, it's not happening any time soon.

i sincerely apologize if i came too hard.

but looking at it that way, anything and everything you can buy is just another scheme to make you, the customer, pay. welcome to capitalism :)

The downside is that the operators actually have succeeded and people demand MMS today.

Saying stupid things is easy.

MMS cost to send as much as SMS. MMS cost nothing to receive. No interest for the operators here. If you only send a few messages a month, it is much cheaper than a data plan that is required for email. MMS is "push technology", email is not.

hmmm, N900 costs a lot (and is targeted as one of flagship devices) and "normal" John Doe expects, that it has got ALL features known from cheap devices. Even, when majority of users don't use MMS, they're implemented in 99% of devices in the market (even these many years old). Sometimes GSM/UMTS operators are using them for mobile payments, advertisement and similar things. Even, if YOU are not using them, their lack will be one of FIRST notified "problems".

Sorry, but Nokia N900 doesn't cost 50 Euros and Nokia already lost many users because of this "useless" function. The same because of portrait mode, lack of FM radio application and some other. If you don't believe, I can give links to some reviews writing about it.

The truth is, that many people are treating N900 like phone with computer added functionality, not like computer with phone functions. And they are looking into it from this perspective. It happens, because Nokia wants a lot of Euro for it.

Make no assumptions about price, the price of email/SMS/MMS depends on your provider's specific tariffs, not actual (technical) costs.
