23yrs old w/ no exp w/ Linux :) N900 here I come!!
I have been reading about the N900 for what seems to be....a very long time. I have seen so many post, "Is this phone right for me?" or "Please convince me to buy the N900 because all I hear about is bugs"...I'm not specifically referring to this forum. Anyways, my point is im 23 I'm not a dev or a linux expert but you know what....I love phones and what they have become! To me the N900 is going to be a great piece of technology that will hopefully push me to learn more. I've had the N85, N95, N97, iPhone 3gS, Storm, BB Tour, Motorola Droid and the Imagio. I've jailbroke iPhone...rooted the droid...installed hybrids on BB's, etc...and I'm bored with all of those. My whole point of this post is for anyone who does not know if they should give the N900 a try bc of all the horror stories. I'm about purchase the N900 at Newegg and overnight it and hopefully receive it by Wednesday. So sometime that night or the next day I will let everyone know what I think of the N900. This is coming from someone who wants the newest tech out there and loves phones etc but is not a dev or linux expert but no affraid to try something new. Hopefully it will help all the fence sitters decide if they should purchase the N900 or just stay away :D

I'm in the same boat as u. But there's this thing called the internet and its like magic and can take u anywhere and learn anything. So I figure why the hell not, life is a learning experience.

DOOD, howcome your recycling phones so fast, the iphone 3gs/droid/ and N97 came out not too long ago. I like to settle with one phone :D and personalize it
Well any ways, congrats, I haven't been a linux user either before I got my N900, or a developer, but I gave it a try. So far it works great, in terms of using it's normal built-in and downloaded functionalities. I like it for it's Nokia message Email client, the calendar seems to work great, internet browsing, and it's ability to multitask. One of the most praised functionalities is it's media play, but i'm not one of those types of people who listen to music or watch movies all day so i haven't used it tooooo...much. I haven't played with the X terminal command line prompt or tried the extras testing and extras development. But I plan to start soon, at least in the extras testing, cause I hear there's a lot of apps in there that need testers to get them pushed out to the public. I know this phone has allot of potential and that's the main reason why I decided to make the leap for this phone. Have fun with you phone when it get here though, its a multitasking monster. |
Re: 23yrs old w/ no exp w/ Linux :) N900 here I come!!
The N900 is a beast.
By that i mean that whereever you are, and need to get something done, quick, anything at all, what you would normally do on a laptop, you get it done, very fast, very smooth, very nice. I have used mine a month now and it is really a beast. A laptop in very small. But too much for me i'm afraid. for an average phone user i think this is a little too professional for me. |

Get it! you obviously aren't afraid of tech and gadgets, and don't mind tackling a challenge even if you are traveling paths through unknown territory. I think you'll find tweaking and hacking the N900 far easier than any of those other locked down proprietary devices. And you will definitely learn a thing or two about Linux with the N900 and help from these forums.... FAR more than you would from the other Linux based devices like Droid.

Doesn't matter if you don't know linux as all the steps are outlined well here at maemo.org forums.
On the way, you'll end up learning some basic basic linux commands and apps. =) I'm a Windows guy myself. But I've used xterminal more with the N900 than I've ever done in my whole life. LOL. (Well, I did use DOS quite a bit also back in the late 80's and early 90's. So I do like command prompts. =P) |

Why newegg? amazon has it for 30 bucks cheaper...and im the same as you too, i get bored of phones quickly and like to switch them up..in the past year ive had htc fuze, samsung omina, n85, n86, n95 8gb, n97, n97 mini, iphone 3gs, and now the n900. and i have to say the n900 is the best so far IMO. I dont know anything about linux but thats what we have devs for, they make the apps and I use them =)

Re: 23yrs old w/ no exp w/ Linux :) N900 here I come!!
I am 17 years old and I love my n900, wouldnt have any other device. Ive been behind the n800 and the n810. I wish it would be more popular around peopl at school. When I showed my older internet tablets to my friends, they've never seen them before, everyone is centered at the itouch. Although I wish Nokia would do something more to attract the N900 to the younger consumer group, i really love it and would not have any other device :). Sorry didn't mean to jack your thread, just had to say that.
