I got it, it´s there... i´m using it at this moment
:) :) hi everybody,
and yes, i got mine from some hours now, and i must tell you, i´m happy... my first impressions are good, to very good.... some good surprises comes from a lot of things, from hardware first, and from the new OS... actually using it to write this message, with a brand new nokia keyboard, and everything works perfectly out of the box. i will give you some impressions here, will try to answer questions, and give some comparations with my old 770... well, i´m really happy, and i must say : IT IS MORE BEAUTYFULL THAN PHOTOS... of course there was some very good ones, but the impression when you´ve got it in hands is really nice. ok, i leave because i want to enjoy and set some parameters to it, and try to restaure some account to use it... ah second imression : it´s so fast compared to 770... yeah, really fast. see ya renaud. |

Re: I got it, it´s there... i´m using it at this moment
is the screen really better compared to the 770? no moire?
will get mine tomorrow, hopefully Edit: does the 'stand'-thing have some kind of rubber on it to prevent the device from sliding away when touching around the screen? |
Re: I got it, it´s there... i´m using it at this moment
subsecond: there's no Java applet support on any Maemo device at the moment (although there was a comment somewhere saying they'd got applets working in Minimo with aleksandyr's JamVM/Classpath port)

my first impressions ; and answer to some questions
hi there,
i continue testing/enjoying my new gadget ! (i must say that i was sad this morning when i discovered Apple launches Iphone... but hey, it confirms that we need some products like this... after checking technicals spec, i was happy to discover that the 770/800 are still better with their big screen/resolution, i think adapted for real surfing... some peoples argument with this : with iphone you have a tablet and a phone integrated... that's also what some people says yesterday when they discover my n800 at opening : the n800 (like the 770) is not a phone. I'm happy with that ! with two things, you can surf while you are on phone with somebody, and need to watch something on the internet at the same time... i really use the 770 and now the n800 like a ultra small computer, and that's what it is !) ok, i come back to my impressions when opening the n800 boxes... First, i'm astonished because delivery was reallyy fast ! yes, i ordered it on monday, and it was delivered on thuesday ! (in approx. 24 hours !) i ordered it from france, using the nokia direct store. it comes from belgium, shipped by UPS. WHOOAOO ! i never see a so fast delivery ! THANKS ! ok, let open the boxes (sorry no pictures of that...) i get exactly what you can see on other photos published over the web by some people... packaging, and presentation is good ! when i discover the n800, i was really impressed. it is more beautyfull than what you can expect with pictures. i was thinking it is some retro-design in some ways, but no. it's definitivelly nice and smart. it's fine, slim, thin... proportions are good to my thoughts... the n800 is a little bit larger than the n770, a a little less high. the overall idea is an impression of a larger screen. this is accuentuated by the light metal grey color of the face plate. all of this contribute to magnify the screen presence. button are nicely integrated in the plate. they are discreet. the battery cover is really easy to open. and the n800 has an integrated stand that is really nice, and very usable (how many time have i finded tips to block my 770 because i don't cary the stand with me.) now you can set the n800 like you want... perhaps, i will be happy to pivot the integrated support one or two clicks more, when i'm laying on the bed :) the stylus is nice also. a little bit bigger, that is nice. is has two colors, black and chrome, that is very precious and business ! it blocks nice inside the tablet and i think it can't get out without help. good. i will not miss my stylus in my pockets because it was no correctly inserted (like some sony devices i owned..) good feeling with it, better grip. the form is good also to really take it like a stylus. texture of material is good to. i have a good feeling when in hands. everything seems strong, nothing seems to moves. the weight/size ratio good to me... it look like it a bit lighter than the 770 (good point here...) let's talk about the buttons. a lot of people says that this is point that the designers have not done a good job... i don't think so. i was affraid about the reduced size of the top button (fullscreen, zoom in zoom out, and on/off buttons) ok, here are my thoughs : the button are more regrouped to the upper left tablet. there is less space between them. this is good because with the 770 you have sometimes to do some gymnastics to push some buttons, compared to the n800. here, i have a more soft feeling using it. so, the top button are smaller, the order has changed... but i think it is more natural using it, and i don't have to turn the tablet to check what button i'm pressing. i can now more easely identify each button just by touching it... good point to me... perhaps the button can be just a little more larger to be more confortable. ok, the screen now. i think it was upgraded ! better white impression (no rainbow effects like the 770) better contrast, better blacks and white... when i compare the 770 to the n800 there is big differences. ok, the 770 screen is very good. but here things are better ! compared to the n800, my 770 is lightly yellow. the n800 is more white... i have see some 770 with darker area on the screen (friends of mine one's) the lighting on the n800 seems to be better : in uniformity, and in power... yes, light seems to be more powerfull. (i wonder it will not drain the battery too fast...) the viewing angle is better too. in all directions... especially from up or down viewing... i used my 770 a lot... with stylus, with nails, with thumbs... i feel like the n800 has a better touch screen. more strong, more precise, and you need to give less pressure. the webcam is really a fun feature. it is not a very good one, because it need that the subject is in light. because when it lacks of light you get grainy picture (video noise) :( it is cool that the camera can be rotated (the picture is rotated at a certain angle of rotation to be shower the right way (nice) the camera pops up when you push it. when it pops out, the internet call application load and directly show what the camera is looking. the video rate seems to be good. now i wonder how fast it streams pictures over the net... i will test this very soon. and i'm happy to have something really light in my pocket, to give video call to my familly when i'm travelling... (hello childrens ! here's what i can see here ! :) ) and now, the power of the machine itself... i must say yes ! it is more fast ! more snapier. i think the more horsepower, the more ram, and the certainly optimised OS and application turn this into a real confortable machine. i used the 770 a lot for surfing the net, i think i will use the n800 more ! OS boot faster, things seems to display faster. sometime i feel some things really pops ! nice ! applications that are inside loads fast. web pages loads faster too. flash applications are also running faster. not as fast as a computer (i know websites that i like i will continue to use with a real PC) but it's better than the 770. google docs and spreadsheets still doesn't load. it still don't reconise the Opera browser. i will try to install minimo as soon as i have time. ok, this are my first impressions. overall very positive i know, but this is what i really think. i discovered a lot of new thing in the os, but this will be another post... here are some answer to some questions : subsecond asks : try to access http://www.netdania.com/ChartApplet.asp please. answer : it loads, i can use it... but is this Java ? die_allianz asks : is the screen really better compared to the 770? no moire? answer : yes, read upside, and you will discover why. be assured this screen is very good ! see ya ! |
let's continue with the n800
still happy ? yeah !
after all above, let's use what's in the box. i already write it, i ordered the n800 with nokia's bluetooth keyboard. at this moment, i remember how difficult it was for me (i'm not a so linux freak) to connect a keyboard on my 770... ok, i used a keyboard that isn't HID compliant. so using some tricks gives me the ability to use the keyboard. but all keys aren't mapped, there's no easy way to do that... i recommand using nokia's keyboard ! it works like a breeze. first using the new control pannel to find the keyboard, type in the pin, and that's it ! the keyboard is connected ! and when using it, non poping onscreen keyboard, the keyboard is actually work every where very nice, i can control scrolling bars when surfing with arrows... yeah ! connecting my phone was easy too ! i just make it visible, and GO ! now i just have to set up the internet connection using my phone. i will do it later, because i just don't need it at this moment :) when configuring bluetooth things, i just discover the OS has evolved a lot... first, the control panel in not just a folder with a lot of icons. now they are grouped into classes (general, connectivity...) just more easy to find the control panel you need... i discovered that the top buttons (zoom in/out) have now fonctions in the OS itself : for example, in control panel, pressing zoom buttons give you ability to switch from small/big icons... different control panels have new functions. like memory control panel have control to manage the memory cards, or display control panel have some new setup like a function to control the backlight of the rocker button. also, the navigation control panel let you set up the application used for web or for contact. also you can setup icons in the top bar ! if you don't want to see some icons, or if you want to change their order ! cool... that's all for today. i have some things to do in real life :p see ya, and hope to get maemo mapper soon ! |
Re: I got it, it´s there... i´m using it at this moment
rjungmann:
Many thanks for your hands-on review of the N800 and comparison with the 770. I've been eagerly reading every story and review of the N800 since the first leak on Saturday morning -- I think yours must be the most comprehensive review so far. A few questions for you (I don't own a 770 ... I've been waiting for the successor model ... so some of these questions may be very basic): 1. You mention the N800 "still doesn't recognize the Opera browser" -- but I thought the N800 came with Opera pre-installed by Nokia. Could you expain what you mean by this. 2. With the N800, can you: - a. Use the BT keyboard and the BT connection to your cell phone simultaneously ? - b. Use the BT keyboard and the WiFi to access the Internet simultaneously ? (In the FCC license application documents filed by Nokia for the N800 in November, there was some wording that BT and WiFi transmissions were mutually exclusive, implying that you might not be able to use the BT KB and WiFi at the same time). Once again, many thanks. |
Re: I got it, it´s there... i´m using it at this moment
My N800 arrived today, and after a quick spin my reaction is positive - feels much snappier, better screen, better audio, and the shape of the N800 is more comfortable to hold (my fingers rest nicely below the curve of the web cam providing extra support). Build quality is good.
I do prefer the old button layout on the top, the new buttons are a little on the small side and since there is no case to automatically lock the screen you now need to do this with the on/off button, which is recessed and tiny. Not very clever. :( The on/off button is a bit fiddly, but no doubt I'll train the appropriate digits so that they can press it more effectively in future. |
Re: I got it, it´s there... i´m using it at this moment
I also received my new N800 and I agree with the review: the new Nokia looks nicer, the applications are snappier and generally better designed, the screen is noticeably better. The new keys are different, but not worse.
Comparing the 770 and the N800, the 770 looks like a beta version (which it probably indeed was) and the N800 the final product. I love some changes: -2 (TWO) cards, and full size, yes! -a microphone plug (in the headphone plug), and we still have a built-in mic -BT keyboards are supported (I complained about all of the above on the 770...) A welcome improvement are the stereo headphones and the built-in stand, both are actually quite good. The webcam is only so-so: very noisy and no correct white balance. Maybe a new soft will improve the last part. Google video play, but not well at all (very jerky). I managed to install all the soft from the 770 that I needed with only minimal fiddling. To answer the question about BT keyboard: you can use the keyboard, other BT connections and wifi simultaneously (you already could on the 770). |

b) works with a 770. I think the misunderstanding about BT+Wifi comes from the fact that you can only have one *NET* connection at a time -- either through Wifi or BT+cellphone. |

I can't get my su-8w bt keyboard to work.... :(

N800 +/- rocker button?
Are the buttons on the top site of the N800 user configurable in Opera? With OS2005, I was able to edit an INI file in order to change the functionality of the +/- rocker button on the top side of the 770 from zoom in/out to page up/down in Opera but this "feature" was disabled in OS2006. Does the N800 and OS2007 re-introduce this ability?
Thanks in advance. |

roberc567 :
thanks for compliments... here are some answer to your questions : 1) i didn't mean that the n800 doesn't reconise Opera brother. i probably bad explained this part : opera is the navigator given with the tablet. i wanted to use google docs and spreadsheet with it, but google doesn't reconise opera like a compatible browser. it need some other ones... 2a) yes you can use BT keyboard AND BT connection to a phone. i also use a BT GPS receiver with it... 2b) yes you can use BT keyboard, and WIfi access... the first message of this tread was typed with a BT keyboard, the n800, and a WiFi net connection... Texrat : what kind of problem do you have for connecting your keyboard ? for that, i just use the Bluetooth control panel to detect the keyboard, follow this : - open your BT control panel, - switch on your keyboard - detect the keyboard with the BT panel procedure - once detected, type in a four digit code like 0000 (with your stylus using the screen of your tablet) - then using your BT Keyboard, and it's FN key, type in the previous code, 0000 in my example... - then that's it. your are now paired, and you can now use your KB ! nickmar : i don't know if it is possible to configure the button's function... |
Re: I got it, it´s there... i´m using it at this moment
Mine arrived today and I'm loving it. Speed is hugely improved from the 770. Mine also came with the latest software update allready installed which was handy.
Browsing is a pleasure. The media player isn't too good at UPnP servers (it hung on me twice) but installing the other media streamer from the repository fixed that and works very well. It feels much lighter than the 770. The camera isn't too hot in normal room lighting but I wasn't planning on using it anyway. I'm very, very happy with my purchase. Now it's everything I expected the 770 to be :) |
Re: I got it, it´s there... i´m using it at this moment
BT keyboard and BT internet via phone are working (simultaneous) for me :)
