"Penguins in Antartica"
 

I was watching Steve Jobs keynote on the iphone, and at about minute 39, he talks about ""Penguins in Antartica"...
I wonder if that was a subliminal message about linux.. and/or n770 and Nokia...

But I must admit, IMHO, Nokia had the bird in their hand... and let it go away...
Nokia was 1 year ahead of anyone...
If the new n800, was smaller and better looking than the 770, if it had a phone, and eventually a 2MP+ camera and/or gps, it would sell like candy...

On the other hand, Nokia can still do it... build a better tablet/phone invest in a really good user interface (canola comes to mind...) AND continue to support Open Source movement ! and this time, DO IT FOR REAL ! go 100% OPEN.
Why Open Source? ... well, because the "users" can release features that they can't... either because of stupid patents, or because of "legal issues"....
one good example is mplayer... another is sharing data...

here's an idea.. why not build an app that turn's the n770 into a wireless NAS device? that way anyone with another wifi device could download stuff to/from it...

Nokia did some bad choices, like locking the wifi driver so that we can't even get a real rssi signal report... not to speak about not getting a real battery meter...
or worse.. they decided not to sell the device in ALL European countries... like if some were not good enough...

so, if anyone from Nokia reads this...
hey! bring the penguins to the sun.... and let the others dry in the desert...
you have what it takes... now is the time to move forward !

A few years ago, I remember receiving an email from the Renault F1 team...
They were looking for talented engineers... they sent this email to many universities in Europe... and maybe all over the world...
as you may recall... they built an incredible new car.. and went on to win the F1 GP season... and at the same time, obliterated what seemed like an invencible team... Ferrari...

I wonder how many non-linux (non-opensource it good too) users/customers have bought (or will buy) an internet tablet a-la N800/770.

The reason for me buying the 770 where two things:

1 - the screen (resolution)
2- linux

In my personal environment (which hold many non-linux persons) nobody have plans in buying such a device as n800/770.

So to me the market for N800/770 is very (and perhaps very, very) small.

I doubt if Nokia publish numbers in how many internet tablets there have been sold.

To me the Nokia internet tablet project is a 'donald ducks playground'-project (for Nokia too, and Iknow that I have no fact to prove this). Apple on the other hand is very targeting there products in how many items haven been sold. And there device
(e.g. the iPhone) is develop to make money.

I don't need or want a built-in phone in the Nokia (nor my Palm) if I could
get the following:
A tiny, cheap, ultra-simple BT-enabled mobile phone, with no extra features,
no big power-hungry color screen etc. I would keep it in a small belt- or
jacket pocket and forget about it except when charging it every third
week or so (hey it can be done, my S-E k700i lasted from half a week before
Christmas until yesterday when I finally got a replacement phone - the multi-
connector broke and I couldn't charge it. Still had plenty of juice left - I did switch
it off while sleeping though.)
And for GPS: The same. But wait, it's like that already :-) My tiny BT-
enabled GPS works just as I would want an accompanying phone to work.

It should not be so difficult to enable the next Nxxx with a phone, Nokia owns the experience with this, and this would make a better competitor to the iphone.

I wanted this a year ago and suggested it to Nokia multiple times: it would be nice if they ported or copied the application which is in their HS-13W Wireless Image Headset and added sms functionality with the software keyboard off the 770.
This would mean an ideal combination of phone data, such as contacts and sms, and the 770. A perfect combination with a small phone such as the Nokia 7380.
I tried the phonelink application from garage, but this lacks all usability and does not sync with the phone.
But apperently Nokia has no interest in features which would allow users to do the same thing with a cheaper phone plus 770 and wants you to pay for an updated phone each year, when the keys have worn down.
