Theme colors work very well now. I tested Marina and Digital Nature, as before. The only difference is that with Marina the small text for date and number of unread items is the same as the unread article text, whereas with digital nature it is not. Idealy, both texts would be the same color; in the case of Marina, it is very easy to read that tiny text, but not so with Digital Nature. The contrast of colors makes reading that tiny text possible. (The real problem is the tiny text font sze, rather than the color. Strange that Nokia made so much text nearly impossible to see.) Anyway, it would help if that tiny text color would follow the unread item color.

*I still see the problem with unread items staying unread after clearing them.

Can you elaborate? What kind of problems? Are you using the version in extras-devel, or the one from extras? The one in extras does have a problem with cyrilic texts. The one in extras-devel fixes that (usual warnings apply about this repository).

These are standard hildon button, so it is the theme designers' choice to use these colors. I don't think applications should override these.

This said, I do want to make the feeds with unread messages more obvious in some way or another, but it might wait until I rewrite the UI using Qt (sometime after the next PR1.2 maemo update).

Hi Slocan.
Unistalled the application and installed one from extras-devel. Still getting "drunken frogs" instead of proper letters.
Here is the screenshot.

Re: FeedingIt - RSS Reader

@Libroid1976: In the main window, click on Preferences in the menu, and at the bottom, make sure that "Webkit Articles Enabled" is selected (if you don't have that option, you're still using the version from Extras).

Thanks Slocan, it perfectly works now :)

Re: FeedingIt - RSS Reader

A few ongoing issues:

* I am still seeing lots of double articles, read and unread, and even two unreads and a third read of the same article.

* marking all read within a feed does not always succeed 100%. It is necessary to exit the feed, return to it, as before..

* Marking all read from the main menu does not do anything at all.

* Switching to portrait mode doesn't always result in text reflow. If you go from the main feed list in landscape to any article list, then switch to portrait, there is no reflow. To fix: back out to main feed list while still in portrait, and then back to the article list.

Re: FeedingIt - RSS Reader

Thanks for the reports, sorodoros. I haven't spent much time troubleshooting/fixing these as I have been focusing for a while on re-working that part of the program, including the read/unread tracking, in particular to add image caching. I should have something out in the next few days.

Slocan, thanks for improvements. :)
One think what bothers me is when you have N900 browser opened and you click "Open in browser" from Feedingit, it uses the same window which was opened. Would be better if it opened in new window.

Spent a bit of time on this this week-end, and next version opens a new window again (and I think it finally works with browser-switchboard).

Re: FeedingIt - RSS Reader

Another dev version in extras-devel, 0.5.3-4, which brings the read/unread improvement, image caching, and finally disables text selection in articles (credit goes to Pauli Virtanen).

Image caching is off by default, but you can enable it in the Preferences menu. It will download the images from each article to /home/user/.feedingi/ (more data to download, so updates take longer).

Thanks for the nice app.

But, after I updated to 0.5.4 version today, it cannot update feeds now.
Nothing changed after update progress, and no error message.

Anyone else had this problem?

I tried just now, and it works, could be other problems.
Sorry for that:)

Re: FeedingIt - RSS Reader

I uploaded 0.5.4-2 to -devel and -testing. So, far the only comment I got on the testing page ( http://maemo.org/packages/package_in...ingit/0.5.4-2/ ) is that portrait mode doesn't work, and feeds do not show titles in the listing. Anyone else experiencing that who could provide more details?

The "file not found" message is indeed very inelegant indeed, but only temporary while old articles are around. To get rid of them, export the feed list, delete all the feeds, and re-import the list.

jcompagner 2010-03-25 07:35

Re: FeedingIt - RSS Reader

i dont see any change in the portrait mode then it was before
it does have 2 problems that i reported before

1. when keyboard is slided out it should always be in landscape (phone and browser for example also work like that and it is handy to force it in landscape)

2. if i am in portrait and i click on a or the link of a message to open it in the browser and the page is wider then what i cand display, so to read it i need to scroll horizontally, i want to swipe to the left but then it can be that i go to the next message or nothing happens (goint to next or previous message doesnt work consistenly when in the browser). i would say that first it needs to scroll the webpage on left/right swiping and when it is at the end or beginnng then that extra swipe can go to then next or previous message

Re: FeedingIt - RSS Reader

Tried out the new version from testing, works fine so far. But there are some points which could be improved IMHO:

- as noted by jcompanger, left/right swipe is sometimes not responding on the first try, compared to 0.4.4. where it worked right
- clicking links in the article opens them in FeedingIt, I would like them to open them in the browser (make this configurable maybe?)
- the force landscape by open keyboard functionality would be nice too

PS.: thanks for your continued effort to make this program better!

Confirmed. It is not that grave as it seems but a few ticks higher sensitivity would make the user experience much better.

I was rather happy to have the webkit article view as it improves usability a lot. Opening it in a browser as a default would spoil that. An option would be ok, but not default.

Another thing I would like to see: Favicons for feeds. Can also be an option, but I'd be rather excited to have those.

sorodoros 2010-03-25 13:47

Re: FeedingIt - RSS Reader

@ofels

I agree, maybe just a tick or two sensitvity. But I really do think the sensitivity is almost there. Where I find that I could use a bit more sensitivity is in the side swipes. Up and down seem good now.

Slocan 2010-03-25 14:43

Re: FeedingIt - RSS Reader

Thanks for the feedback!
So, feeds from wordpress.com contain a <media:title> tag which seems to confuse the library i'm using, and the feed listing does not display the right title.

In regards to swipe sensitivity, I might go back to the previous method (I changed it because I found it too sensitive :) ). I also think it's not quite as sensitive while the article is not fully loaded and the layout finished.

In regards to the external browser, I like the way it opens in webkit, with the option in the menu to open the original article in the external browser.

In regards to wide articles, you first need to enable horizontal scrolling in the menu, which disables swipes and enables you to scroll any way you want. Although jcompagner's idea is nice, it might be tough to technically do right. But maybe something in between, we'll see.

As for the orientation, it is locked when you open the keyboard. This means that if you are in landscape, it will stay in landscape. But if you open it while in portrait, you'll stay in portrait mode. This is by design.

.

ahh stupid me..
I never saw that menu option of horizontal scrolling.

Also opening in a browser is there also already so thats also not a problem.

I do think now that this bug really should be fixed by nokia and not say now we dont want this, its completely inconsistent:

https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5759

thats why i never really tried that menu! i didnt see the drop down arrow!

Re: FeedingIt - RSS Reader

A couple of suggestions/comments:

1) Swipe sensitivity: I find the current setting too slow and the previous setting too fast. Something in between would be great.
2) Feed rendering: Are the feeds rendered by Webkit in the latest version? I remember several revision earlier there was an option to choose to use Webkit or not. I like Webkit mainly because the font size is adjustable. However, in the latest release the option is gone and the text is again a bit small. It would be great if we could have such option, or maybe support for volume key zooming.

Thanks for the hard work!

Slocan 2010-03-26 18:44

Re: FeedingIt - RSS Reader

@sony: The option for the article font size is still there, it has just been involuntarily "hidden" :(. I'll push an update tonight for that and the media:title bug.

sorodoros 2010-03-26 21:51

Re: FeedingIt - RSS Reader

Pretty sure this is a bug?

In the article list, if the title has an &, it displays as "&amp;" instead of just "&." Also itlalics are "<em> ...normal text... </em>."

But both are okay in the article itself.

Re: FeedingIt - RSS Reader

Great App, replaces the built in RSS reader prefectly and has more functionality. I also love the imaging caching, this is great and now lets me sync up the feeds before jumping on the subway.

I am however not a huge fan of the new left and right swipes though, it does not feel like a swipe anymore. Its more like stubbing your finger into the screen to get it to go left and right, it works perfectly but takes a bit of getting used to.

Is there a way to make the swipe user configurable - length, speed etc?

Slocan 2010-03-27 05:43

Re: FeedingIt - RSS Reader

0.5.4-3 in extras-devel. I tweaked the swipe gesture, which I think feels better now (does it?), re-enabled the article font size setting, made read feeds a little more obvious, and it now handles <em> and & tags better.

ddwalker 2010-03-27 06:14

Re: FeedingIt - RSS Reader

Wow, finally it comes with "cache image".

I have to say FeedingIt is easily the most used community supported application on my N900.

Great job. Thanks!

Re: FeedingIt - RSS Reader

*I now find the swipe sensitivity to be perfect.
*& and italics fixed.
*Article text size config is very helpful, too.

My most used app. Thanks for the update!

Swipe is perfect for me too, thank you! Great application, sets me up perfectly for reading engadget and other feeds on the subway now...

Great work!

I tried to install this but it says package missing: libxslt (>=1.1.18).
Where do I find that from and how come no one else seems to have had this problem?

Re: FeedingIt - RSS Reader

@Bret, Is the "Nokia Applications" catalogue enabled in the Application Manager? I think that library is in there.

Re: FeedingIt - RSS Reader

More text tags are not showing correctly - em dash, for example, but others using symbol text are also not rendering properly.

jcompagner 2010-03-28 18:42

Re: FeedingIt - RSS Reader

i have currently only 2 things that i see could be improved:

1, when i take my phone out of my pocket and switch over 2 feedingit many times it is in portrait mode, even if it is now in landscape (and the keboard can also be slided out but thats another small request) i really have to trigger a extra change so first hold the phone in portrait and then back then it goes to landscape, it would be nice if feeding it gets an event that it is now shown (to front/made active) that it chekcs for the current orientation of the phone.

2, many times when i click on a link in a message, i dont really notice if it is loading, so cant really see if my click was catched. it would be nice to have some loading indicator somewhere.

I agree that would be helpful, but I think the real problem is that launching webkit takes much too long. I've seen 11-12 seconds before the screen shifts, then another 6-7 before the webkit page renders. Furthering the problem is the fact that finger scrolling on certain webkit pages is nearly imossible. I am pretty sure Slocan is waiting for PR1.2 to addrress these issues.

cipper 2010-03-30 19:51

Re: FeedingIt - RSS Reader

Great app, the only thing I miss is an option to automatic update the feeds when starting the application.

Slocan 2010-03-30 20:31

Re: FeedingIt - RSS Reader

@jcompagner: 1. I'm using the portrait.py that was posted in the forums some time ago, which listens to messages sent by the MCE daemon to notify of orientation changes. I do have a feeling that some messages are not sent under some circumstances. Not an area I know much about, but I'll try to poke at it.
2. I'd like to add some loading indicator as well. But i'm kind of waiting for PR1.2 to see what will be available in regards to the Qt libraries, and possibly make the switch to that for the UI, like sorodoros said.

@cipper: you can actually trigger an update by starting the app with the command:
"FeedingIt update" (without the quotes) from the X-terminal, or by changing the app shortcut (not sure if there is an easy way to do so, other than editing the .desktop file).
