There are some amazing mods on this thread but unfortunately, like many others I haven't tried any due to the concern of bricking my phone.

Now my question is, how difficult would it be to create an app that could do all the UI changes via GUI (something like Tweekr) so that people like me who lack Maemo knowledge can also take advantage of these mods.

Ajamils,

These amazing mods are also possible for you,
even without an App.
If your using a wireless router the easiest thing to do is set up WinSCP on your computer and SSH on your phone,
thread and guide here:
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...ghlight=WinSCP)
that will let you see the files on your phone, so you can edit them, if you can get that installed and connected you are set to go.
Mosts mods have exellent how-to's information included.
And it might look difficult but once you've got the 'hang' of it is
pretty easy to do.

For example, Me, a Meamo N00b AND a woman(!!)
managed in a day (with help of a great members on this board)
to edit;

- The color of my leds,
- changed my status bar to a clear one,
- changed almost every icon you can think of (even replaced the mediaplayer and Alarm icons with nice 3D ones),
- Installed some extra themes
- modified my IM and SMS conversations into the bubbles ones (with my female Pinkish backgrounds ROFL..)

And believe me if I can do it, everybody can....

And what IF you brick you phone???
just make sure you back up things,
read the manuals 5 times to be sure
and do exactly as described,
when hesitating ASK a Pro first.

Worst case scenario you have to reflash your phone.
Ok, I wouldn't be happy about that either,
but on the other hand you will always find somebody who will help you
And on top you learn so much from fiddling with you phone...

Am so glad I took the step into the Modding community and am more then 500%
satisfied with the look of my OWN Personalized like I want to phone..

(am almost afraid to show it to a sales guy in a phone-shop when they don't have it in stock yet,
it would be such a disappointment for them if they see a normal straight out of the box one.... ).

Next thing for me is to design some things myself.....and continue to update my phone.

Wanted to take this opportunity to thank everybody on Meamo.org
for their helpfulness and their willing to share their knowledge, you guys are great !!!!

so you are afraid that changing settings will brick your device but doing exactly the same with gui app doesn't?

yes, an app is doable but it is unsure that it will ever get to extras. and extras-testing is same old possible risk of bricking -story.....

and leetut, you dont know how to do searches from this forum?
e: here are some hints that you have user error with the app

bro funny thing is this forum seems to have the easiest search function of any forum ive used!
so yeah i have searched this forum, what do you suggest i search for?
i dont 'have user error with the app' what so ever?
the app just does not work i.e. will not install, nothing, nada, zip, you get me bro
there is not even a program to install in that link you gave?
just 4 .jar files
they wont install in my vista32 pc?
so theme maker (both versions ive tried) do not work!
therefor ill keep changing the themes on my phone, is that ok boss:)

Re: N900 MODs - share your MODs!!

mscarrot,

Thank you for your kind words of encouragement. I finally did some mods (changed LED colors, added reboot button). Since I couldn't get WinSCP to work with my N900 (constant connection errors) I did them the hard way.

Now looking forward to some more mods :)

Re: N900 MODs - share your MODs!!

How to disconnect automatically from idle networks (3g/2g/wi-fi)

Before you start, you'll need to install vim and rootsh, both found in the extras repository. (if you don't know how to use vim, google "vim manual")

1) In xterminal input
Code:

sudo gainroot
2) In xterminal input
Code:

vim /usr/local/bin/autodisconnect
3) Contents of /usr/local/bin/autodisconnect:
Code:

#!/bin/sh
sleep 180
a=`tail -1 /proc/net/route | cut -f1`
b=`ifconfig $a | grep RX.b | cut -d"(" -f1 | cut -d: -f2`
while [ "$a" != "Iface" ]
do
      c=`expr $b + 1000`
      sleep 180
      b=`ifconfig $a | grep RX.b | cut -d"(" -f1 | cut -d: -f2`
      a=`tail -1 /proc/net/route | cut -f1`
      if [ "$b" -lt "$c" -a "$a" != "Iface" ]; then
              dbus-send --system --dest=com.nokia.icd /com/nokia/icd_ui com.nokia.icd_ui.disconnect boolean:true
              sleep 10
              a=`tail -1 /proc/net/route | cut -f1`
      fi
done

exit 0

4) In xterminal input
Code:

chmod a+x /usr/local/bin/autodisconnect
5) In xterminal input
Code:

vim /etc/network/if-up.d/00_autodisconnect
6) Contents of /etc/network/if-up.d/00_autodisconnect
Code:

!#/bin/sh
#Run a script to disconnect idle networks

console none

script
              /usr/local/bin/autodisconnect
end script

exit 0

7) In xterminal input
Code:

chmod a+x /etc/network/if-up.d/00_autodisconnect
8) Reboot device

9) Enjoy!

Extra instructions for those looking specific funcionallity:

a) If you want to disconnect only from wi-fi change line 5
Code:

while [ "$a" != "Iface" ]
to
Code:

while [ "$a" == "wlan0" ]
b) You can also play with two values:

i) The constant (1000 in this case) in line 7 is about how many bytes must be receiven in a given period of time (the sleep time in line 9) to consider the connection in use. Anything less than that is considered idle. I also recomend a low number because I still don't know exactly how does it get along with idling in IM (but you still want to stay "Avalaible"). If you get randomly disconnected when idling in IM lower the value.

ii) The sleep time in line 8 determines when you'll disconnect automatically. It will almost never be the exact time indicated. If you stop using your connection it should disconnect in a range of x to 2x seconds of the time set (x being the sleep time).

Any questions post here: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...499#post518499 . Hope it works for you. Both posts will be kept updated (if I ever change anything else).

Add Reboot Option

Warning about >50 reboot count:

* Check count: cat /var/lib/dsme/boot_count
* Increases by 3 each reboot (Need verified)
* Make sure to shutdown and only then boot (all this without being connected to a power source) before it reaches 48 (at 51 you're device won't boot!)

It certainly was pre-PR1.1, and I vaguely recall someone having tried it post-update and still having the same issue, but I could be mistaken.

I intentionally made mine go to that point with the PR 1.1 FW. It does go thru a differnt boot at that point where it shuts itself fully down and restarts thus resetting the counter. They obviously did a work around in 1.1.
