Re: * The Truly Epic Maemo 5 MODs Thread *

People Please Help!
How to change battery icons?
i've used Midnight Commander and nothing
've used sudo gainroot - root with commands: cp ; mv ; and again nothing.
I've tried to remove battery icons in /usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/hildon/ and it says denied.
I've read mostly all of the threads and again NOTHING ! :(
I've updated to pr1.3 if it means anything.

Place the .png icons into usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/hildon

Place the 2 .xml files in etc/systemui

now reboot your device to see the new icons in the power key menu.

*note* applying this mod will remove some of th default options from the PowerKey menu, the options shown in the screenshot are what you will get unless you tweak the systemui.xml file yourself.

hello,
how do you add the icon for the phone?

no need to be an *** about it, it's not to my taste as well, but he got some nice stuff there, so kudos to him for the work he put in.
beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, dont forget that ;)
anyways back to topic:
can somebody write some gui for us simple people that will allow us to change all icons to our chosen icons. (probably something that will change systemui.xml file as well so we won't screw with it)
something similar to the theme customizer but with icon changing/restoring capabilities. and kudos to all you moders tweakers out there.
i actually dont have time to spend on this now (end of semester) but i got hooked wasted 2 days already. changed bunch of stuff and realized that a gui would be a lifesaver.
get your desired icons on your desktop (PS them, whatever) and just place them in home, the gui will do the rest (almost :P)

@Weedalot: Could you not just use filebox with root access and view images enabled? All you'd need to do is put the images in MyDocs and move them from there, all done on the N900 there's absolutely no need for WinSCP anymore.

EDIT: The systemui.xml only needs to be edited to change the power-button menu, like adding or removing the reboot button.

If it helps, these are the settings I use for filebox;

http://i53.tinypic.com/295zviv.png

http://i51.tinypic.com/642rso.png

http://i55.tinypic.com/ngf4n6.png

To copy just select an item/items, then keep your finger pressed to bring up the action menu, select copy and they'll be copied to clipboard.

Go to the folder where you want to place the items, select clipboard and paste and you'll be given an overwrite option, select yes and you're done.

To make things even easier you can bookmark frequently accessed folders, so you can get from MyDocs to the folder you need in a matter of a couple of keypresses;

yea i know, ;) been doing this last night, thanks anyways.
figured out many of the things you wrote about here. just very gruesome work to be clicking all over copying and pasting here and there. also file box could use the "select an option to do with files" like the standard file manager (already posted in the FileBox thread)

i got a question: what is the RebootX i saw here on someone's power key menu?

edit: another question: does anyone know how i can write a command that will launch the on screen keyboard. and how can i do a .desktop file directing me to it? i need it so i can pop the on screen keyboard when looking for a contact (i first must use a key on the keyboard than close it than click it so it will pop, a bit annoying) thanks guys in advance.

Re: * The Truly Epic Maemo 5 MODs Thread *

OK, maybe this would be easier if you're changing a lot of icons, and it will also save you having to overwrite any of the original icons :D

1) Copy your opt/usr/share/icons/hicolor folder to your PC's desktop
2) Change all the icons you want
3) Rename the hicolor folder to something else
4) Put the newly named folder in opt/usr/share/icons/
5) Select that folder (it will show as an icon theme) in theme customizer

Kind Regards,

got 2 more questions : first is: the filebox icon style doesnt recognize my an-droid icon pack anything i can do about it?
another thing is: i placed new avatars inside the an-droid icon pack replacing the originals which works fine but in sms conversations the avatar (only the default one, replacing the blue person image) is not properly sized, it shows only the top left of the avatar and not the whole thing. how do i fix that?

Here are instructions on how to do get the exact same lock screen as I have:

1. Make sure that you have wget installed. If not, install from terminal:
Code:

sudo gainroot
apt-get install wget

2. Install ImageMagick (command-line tools for image manipulation) if you don't already have it. I downloaded the optified version from here. Download the file and install it:
Code:

sudo gainroot
wget http://www.debernardis.it/downloads/imagemagick_6.3.7.9.dfsg2-1~lenny3maemo1_optified_armel.deb
dpkg -i imagemagick_6.3.7.9.dfsg2-1~lenny3maemo1_optified_armel.deb

3. Remove the 'swipe to unlock' text as described in this thread. I followed these exact instructions.
4. Remove the slider image from your theme folder or replace it with a transparent empty slider image. I have used the first option and I use plastic-dark-black theme:

Code:

sudo gainroot
cd /usr/share/themes/plastic-dark-black/images
mv LockSliderThumb.png LockSliderThumb.png.orig
mv LockSliderThumbPortrait.png LockSliderThumbPortrait.png.orig

5. Create a directory somewhere on your phone where you want to have the few files needed for this. I created /home/user/CustomStuff/ directory. In this directory create a text file called e.g. lockscreen.sh and put the following commands in the file:
Code:

# simple shell script file (lockscreen.sh)
cd /home/user/CustomStuff/
wget http://lastfm.dontdrinkandroot.net/tools/user/artistcloud/generationally/6month/normal_thumb.png
mv normal_thumb.png thumb.png
convert -negate -rotate 90 -resize 95% thumb.png lastfm.png
composite -gravity south lastfm.png Fresh_series_3_bar.png lockslider.png
cp lockslider.png /usr/share/themes/plastic-dark-black/backgrounds/.

The wget command downloads an image (go to http://lastfm.dontdrinkandroot.net/ to personalize your image). The downloaded image is then renamed in order not to confuse wget the next time the script is run.
The convert command changes the color in the image from black to white (-negate) and rotates it 90 degrees. In addition, the image is resized to 95%.
The composite command overlays the downloaded image onto the 800x480 lock screen image that you want to use. I have here used this image (put it in the same folder as this script). The '-gravity south' option just puts the downloaded image in the bottom of the lock screen image.
Finally the final lock screen image is copied to the theme folder.

You can now try if it works by executing the following in a terminal window:
Code:

sh /home/user/CustomStuff/lockscreen.sh
Your lock screen should now have been updated.

6. Use Alarmed app to automatically execute the script whenever you want. I have configured Alarmed to do it daily.

That's it :) If you are not interested in last fm statistics on your lock screen, you can put anything there using this method. The ImageMagick tools are pretty powerful and also allows your to embed text onto images. So the possibilities of adding info to the lock screen are endless ;)

amazing work, the possibilities are endless, what ever info you want you can get on your lock screen

-thanks generationally

For the first question, change to another theme and then back to the one you are using. The right icons should now be visible.
For the second question, I'm not entirely sure what's happened. Do you have the right sized icons for the right folders? The avatar seems to be in quite a few different sizes. 48x48, 64x64, 96x96, 144x144 and 216x216. I suggest just having a quick double check. This is just a guess that it may be something to do with sizes as I don't use the android icon pack.

but the other icons that i changed do work, i mean they were all sized the same but just the default one wont auto size itself into the right size. it is strange, also the place i downloaded these icons "meego.de" had these only. so i assumed its correct. ill try adding the default one "resized" to 64x64 and see what will happen

The unlock screen is part of the theme and contains the background for the sliding part (the "ball" that slides is not part of the image). Since I'm using the default theme, the image is located in /usr/share/themes/alpha/backgrounds/lockslider.png

(I've attached it as well)

I just used it as a template to GIMP a slider background on it on the correct spot and then overwrote the default theme image with mine:

(do this as root)
Code:

cp /home/user/MyDocs/lockslider.png /usr/share/themes/alpha/backgrounds/
And that's about it.

(here's my panoramic desktop and the lockslider image for reference: abandoned.tar.gz)

what is the name for the "ball" file that floats on top of the background?

i cannot find it to change it.

This is my lock screen mod inspired by the iPhone typophone lock screen.

Attached is the perl script that creates the lock screen mod and puts the image in the right theme folder. You will need to have ImageMagick command line tools installed and modify the perl script a bit to match your needs (background image to use, theme paths etc) but I'm sure you clever ones will figure it out ;) Also you need to remove the 'switch to unlock' text and the lock slider graphics. It uses Helvetica Neue fonts so you will have to track them down as well if you want the exact same style.

Use Alarmed app to automatically run the script daily at midnight to get the right date shown.

Change the extension of the attached lockScreenCal.txt to .pl.

Make the perl script executable ('chmod a+x lockScreenCal.pl') or execute it with 'perl lockScreenCal.pl'.

The used font family is Helvetica Neue. They are commercial fonts so I cannot share them.

I use the plastic-dark-black theme and the Helvetica Neue Lt font as my system-wide font. I think the font works real well and gives a more stylish look than the standard Nokia Sans font.

It's been a while since I looked at this so I should have done this sooner.
Packaged up and compressed with OptiPNG are the PNG files for my HTC-Style QBW Flipclock, as well as the RX-TX-IP widget, and YahooWeather widget.
Make sure you have WGET installed (apt-get install wget)

You'll need the QBW Flipclock widgets installed already, this is a modification to change the look by using different png files.

The flipclock can be installed from this this thread
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...=qbw+flipclock

The format to make this work is a little different to the original - all of the digits have a TRANSPARENT background, so another qbw is used as the flipclock for the digits. I have supplied single and wide flipclock backgrounds for your taste (credit Darkl4r for the original)

For this purpose, the separate filename sare flipclocktrans.png.* and flipclockblank.png/flipclockblankwide.png

The panel in the background is for the main flipclock code.

Extract all to /home/user/.queen_beecon_dir and edit the qbw files to match - they are named different so as not to overwrite the original flipclock files.
Enjoy!

EDIT: RX-TX-IP fixed Not sure why it happened.

@ [DarkGUNMAN] thank you for your yahoo weather widget, I have a question for you..have you noticed that the low temp seems to be a tad crooked (slanted upwards) but I believe it coming from yahoo because it's alittle off there to. So I made separate QB snippets for the high and low temps as I like the side by side better than the stacked, but as I'm still learning here is there away to make QB do the side by as one widget instead of 2 and I found one of your older post to get the current temp is your new post better to use? For this purpose, the separate filename sare flipclocktrans.png.* and flipclockblank.png/flipclockblankwide.png

The panel in the background is for the main flipclock code.

Extract all to /home/user/.queen_beecon_dir and edit the qbw files to match - they are named different so as not to overwrite the original flipclock files.
Enjoy!

EDIT: RX-TX-IP fixed Not sure why it happened.

I have done above and added Yahooweather and RX-TX-IP to qbw but how do i actually get the clock?
Thanks
