I'm not on anyone's side but I do understand where he's coming from. Your thread as a whole is great and is full of nice mods. But do avoid posting a copy and paste of someone else's words. Everyone will think that you wrote them even if it isn't. So you are basically claiming it as your own words.

If it's pretty much a copy and paste from somehwere else (which I can clearly see that it is for that Reboot button), it would be better to just post the link to that site with the instructions. You can however freely modify the instructions and post it as yours if your instructions use different methods/easier wording etc. :)

thats why you must always put a link to original source. unless you want to ruin your reputation.

Re: N900 MODs - share your MODs!!

Polemics for nothing... if he reposted something he read somewhere else without making a gain from it (he isn't even getting visits on his site/blog with that), and eventually changing it in part, why complain?
He's helping those who cannot find the instructions from the original poster after all... important is to share the knowledge...
Think of opensource software.. do you know which part is coded by who? no, but we all can use it..
(if he wants to post a link to the source it's kind, but I wouldn't find it necessary)

Just my opinion. Thanks for the mods f2thak, or whoever wrote them originally. Keep it up.

jakiman 2010-01-18 10:46

Re: N900 MODs - share your MODs!!

@thecursedfly,
To be more proper, he should have posted the link and that's it. (with a description of what the mod does)
Then you would have gone to that site and read that article from the source.
f2thak still gets thanks for posting that link. Everyone is happy. :D

Not gaining anything? Isn't gaining reputation nothing? You can make a name for yourself without making a single dime. Sometimes, that is worth more than money.

Information is not the same as open source. I write articles / reviews of stuff myself. If someone just posts them in some forum without a single mention of me or my site, people will all think he wrote them. He gets the rep/fame. I get nothing.

Same thing can happen here. http://my-maemo.com isn't getting recognised one little bit for writing that article and spending the time doing so.

f2thak, it's great to have all these mods in one thread. Very useful. Hence this thread became so big in such a short time. I guess we are just saying, be more careful. =)

INSTALLATION COMPLETE SOUND

to change the 'beep' that sounds when app manager has finished installing, to 'beep beep installation complete'

put the file 'ui-information_note' into:
/usr/share/sounds/

http://www.mediafire.com/?y54jnzmyjht

sounds great!

Does anyone know how to move "Reject" button from the bottom to the top of screen during incoming call?
I've tired to reject calls pressing "Reject" instead of "Answer" button:)

I think we'd all like to see this mod of yours. Surely if it was to make it's way onto the internet somehow, it could be shared with everyone. As long as it has a readme stating it is still the copyright of nokia, I cannot see the issue.
Your not claiming it as yours? If you send me it I'll put it up somewhere stating just that. I'll also seek some clarification from Nokia on this.

I REALLY the signal mod! As well as the batt mod. You have a good eye. The only suggestion I would have on the batt level is fully use the icon area you have. You may be already, just a suggestion. Helps with us folks with old eyes!

Just a note to say that, rather than replacing the system icons, you can override the icons locally by putting them into ~/.local/share/icons instead of /usr/share/icons (you'll need to create a matching directory structure).

Sure. For example, this post has some replacement battery icons, which it instructs to install into /usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/hildon, replacing the system icons. Instead, you can install them into ~/.local/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/hildon and they'll override the system icons, but leave them in place.

Thanks, but sorry I am not that familiar with Unix directory structure...
What does " ~ " stand for?
I assume the " . " before local has a special function, right?
And where exactly is this path located in the directory structure?

Sorry, ~ is the user's home directory - /home/user on the N900. The . before local means that the directory is hidden normally (so running "ls" is X Terminal won't show it).

Using X Terminal, you can create the directory by doing:
Code:

mkdir -p ~/.local/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/hildon
and you can change to the directory by doing:
Code:

cd ~/.local/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/hildon
Unfortunately you can't use File Manager to get to the directory, but emelfm2 and mc should work okay.

Heres my signal and battery mods, did them to match the default "blue" theme, icon pack includes original icons also.

let me know if anyone wants orange versions.

Signal images go in /usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/hildon
Battery1 images goes in /usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/hildon
Battery2 images goes in /usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/hildon/
