Sure. For example, this post has some replacement battery icons, which it instructs to install into /usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/hildon, replacing the system icons. Instead, you can install them into ~/.local/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/hildon and they'll override the system icons, but leave them in place.

Very interesting,

I returned all the default files, boot video etc config files back.
Can i override all those files in .local if i make the file structures?

I made .local in MyDocs so i can acces it with usb does that work?

The .local directory has to be in /home/user (it already existed on my N900) - you can certainly symlink it (or any of the subdirectories) to within MyDocs though.

Someone can upload here the original files of general_wlan2.png and general_wlan.png. I accidentally deleted them :(
Thanks

Did not work for me in MyDocs the N900 acted weird after that, i made the directory's in /home/user/.local/share instead.

I'm surprised it didn't work - I've not tried it myself for that, but for the custom menus I use a symlink to MyDocs (so that, if I make a mistake and end up in a reboot loop, I can still get access to fix the issue) and that works fine.

Can't find general_wlan2.png, only general_wlan.png /usr/share/icons/hicolor/18x18/hildon

Do you have default.conf, /etc/hildon-welcome.d?

You can't - MyDocs is FAT32 and that doesn't support symlinks. You have to do it the other way round - move /home/user/.local/share to MyDocs, then create a symlink in /home/user/.local.

What I'd probably do (to keep things clear from the PC end) is:
Code:

mkdir -p MyDocs/Icons/scalable
mkdir -p MyDocs/Icons/48x48
mkdir -p .local/share/icons/hicolor/scalable
mkdir -p .local/share/icons/hicolor/48x48
ln -s /home/user/MyDocs/icons/scalable .local/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/hildon
ln -s /home/user/MyDocs/icons/48x48 .local/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/hildon

Note: I've not tested this, so it may not work!

Re: N900 MODs - share your MODs!!

It all works for me in /home/user/.local/share/ ...
where share is kind of equivalent to /usr/share and takes precedence.

Don't risk trashing your original files, try it in your home :-)

Re: N900 MODs - share your MODs!!

I will keep using /home/user/.local/share with WinSCP though. i don 't understand it realy, i'am new too linux

REORDER STATUS ICONS

for this you need to edit status-menu.plugins
find it in:
/ect/hildon-desktop/

from this: (status area)

to this:

also from this: (status menu)

to this:
http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/5954/37995190.png

example:
original:
Quote:

[connui-cellular.desktop]
X-Desktop-File=/usr/share/applications/hildon-status-menu/connui-cellular.desktop
X-Status-Area-Permanent-Item=Special-Item-0

[status-area-applet-battery.desktop]
X-Desktop-File=/usr/share/applications/hildon-status-menu/status-area-applet-battery.desktop
X-Status-Area-Permanent-Item=Special-Item-1
X-Status-Menu-Position=1
modified:

Re: N900 MODs - share your MODs!!

Im also thinking of removing some not usefull sounds from directories to make system lighter!!!
I know if i dont be carefull i can cause some damage to it or totaly brick it but i just cant help my self asking shall i or shall i not?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
Idea is to try to remove one and see what happen if sys gonna look for it with some warning sign and error or just BE QUIET and ignore.....
Will update progress later for u :)

Wish me luck

Re: N900 MODs - share your MODs!!

would be better to replace the sounds with muted sounds, then the system would still think its playing them, there should be a config file of some type that we could edit and turn some sounds off manually

and ive always used adobe audition 1.5 for basic sound editing/converting

Here is what desktop shortcuts look like without tile backgrounds (actually, transparent tiles). This allows you to get shortcuts closer together, while still looking nice and not interfering with one another. I've also attached two shortcut tile backgrounds I made by modding the original background tile from the default theme, along with the circuit board wallpaper if you would like to use it. I just copy the tile I want to the relevant theme images directory and overwrite the existing file (after making a backup):
/user/share/themes/YOURTHEME/images/ApplicationShorcutApplet.png
One tile in the .zip is the transparent tile, while the other is a simple wire frame with a transparent center.
After replacing the existing ApplicationShortcutApplet.png, just reboot or switch to a different theme and then back to see the changes.

Here is something for those of you that want some different UI sounds. I compiled a bunch of modern Star Trek UI sounds from various free collections on the web and used them as source material for n900 UI sounds. They are not "over the top" sci-fi sounds, as all sounds were created from source sounds designed specifically as UI sounds on the Star Trek shows. I did my best to EQ/edit/compress/normalize/pan each sound so that they correspond perfectly with their associated visual animation/transition and all mesh together well volume-wise. I use Cakewalk Sonar. Each of the sounds is actually only a fraction of the original source sound, since most of them were too long or "busy" to be used as a repetitive UI sounds. Sounds replaced are;
Window Open, Window Close, Virtual Keyboard launch, Charging started, Information note (ex. Application Installed), Confirmation note (ex. Are you sure you want to delete?), Camera focus sound, Camera shutter sound.
I made several attempts to create different touchscreen and keyboard sounds, but I couldn't come up with anything that was as minimal as the current "clicks" while still sounding futuristic. I tried various short, high to mid range beeps or chirps, but they all started to sound annoying after a while. The sounds are already named properly, and are ready to be copied into the /usr/share/sounds directory (don't forget to backup the original directory first). Enjoy!

I did,

sudo gainroot

/home/user # mkdir -p MyDocs/Icons
/home/user # ls -s /home/user/MyDocs/Icons .local/share/icons

I just want too add files too /home/user/MyDocs/Icons that it wil be added too .local/share/icons from usb storage mode too make it easy for people modifying their icons that have no knowledge.

It does not work.

Hi everyone

I posted early this week saying I was working on a Customization Wiki page based upon the posts here.

I have managed to create a framework and a lot of details but it still needs more work. Unfortunately circumstances mean i am not able to work on it for at least a week so i am posting here for anyone interested in updating it.

If you include instuctions in your zip, it would help for future restorations
