samba support mounting n800
:) Wondering again, how can I mount samba shares - like:
mount -t cifs //server/sharename /mount/point I tried using smbfs also.. But I get No such device. I also tried then smbBrowser.. But nothing gets mounted.. Any suggestions.... |
Re: samba support mounting n800
I am also interested in this... since 2.1 update smbfs is not working and is not listed under lsmod.... Do this mean we have to compile it to the kernel?
|
Re: samba support mounting n800
need to make the kernel module cifs.ko
|
Re: samba support mounting n800
I read that Os2006 needed a module in order to mount samba shares. And the module was located at http://fanoush.webpark.cz/maemo/cifs.tgz. Maybe 2007 needs a kernel module.

Re: samba support mounting n800
Thats for cifs. You dont need cifs for sbmount.
|
Re: samba support mounting n800
Just tried smbmount. Got error saying that the kernel does not support smbfs.
|
Re: samba support mounting n800
You need to install the smbfs pkg.... use "apt-get install smbfs" make sure you have the maemo-hackers repo install and see if that work for you... Like I said it worked in maemo 2.0 just fine but it wont in 2.1
|
Re: samba support mounting n800
I got all of the samba pkg installed.. Smbfs, samba, smbclient, etcc
|
Re: samba support mounting n800
Than you are in the same boat I am.
|
Re: samba support mounting n800
May be I got a false info here, but as far as I understand, you need CIFS if you want to access certain Windows box, like 2003 server and XP on the 2003 domain. Cuz SMB base on the old LANMAN, and it won't work w/ the new 2003 domain. I'm not sure what you need the SMB for, but you may need CIFS as well. And yes, I'm looking forward to streaming video from my Windows box as well.

I was using smbfs and smbbrowser just fine with my network in 2.0 withouth cifs. I update to 2.1 and now I am unable too. Is not mission critical here you know but at points it was very usefull. I am going to look in to it further tomorrow.. I am sure is because smbfs is not been supported as a file system and I am going to have to add smbfs manually |
Re: samba support mounting n800
Just a heads up.... in 2.1 cifs is allready in the system by default there is no need to fallow the "How To" from the mamemo site all you have to do is call on cifs.
If you ask your self how do I knwo?!? Well this is what happen when I called on the cifs module... Code:
Nokia770-39:/home/user/MyDocs# insmod ./cifs.koI am writing a script to mount with cifs every time you need to mount your drives... that way you dont have to run that loong command every time.. all you have to is call on "script" If you interested on the script please pm |

Re: samba support mounting n800
hehehe that save me time I was working on something similar.
I dont think that you have to call in cifs.ko in the script since is nativle in 2.1... Correct me if I am wrong. Thanks.... |
Re: samba support mounting n800
nope, it was not working for me without downloading and then calling the module in the scripty.... now it works fine. it's easy to use if you integrate it into the run applet.
cheers tobi |
Re: samba support mounting n800
Well I didnt have to do all that... I did it a bit more simpler...
All I had to was add mount to my fstab and than add user to sudo to be able to call on mount.. than made a small scrip to mount and umount thats it.. :) |
Re: samba support mounting n800
does not work using n800 - 2.6.18-omap1.
I get this error message: insmod: cannot insert `./cifs.ko': Invalid module format (-1): Exec format error And this is because that version is for 2.6.16. The original that came with the n800. I upgraded to OS 2007 version 2.2006.51-6. and I guess that changed the kernel to 2.6.18-omap1. Were can I get cifs.ko for 2.6.18-omap1? |
Re: samba support mounting n800
Do I have to download the code and compile.
|
Re: samba support mounting n800
Do not insmod just call on cifs
As posted by Milhouse there is no cifs.ko in OS2007 but you can try the command to see if that works for you I dont have a N800 to see if the FS support is compiled in the kernel. |
Re: samba support mounting n800
Updated http://maemo.org/maemowiki/HowToAccessWindowsCIFS with link to compiled cifs module, please try it (I don't have the device) and remove the comment from that page if it works.

Re: samba support mounting n800
:) Thank you.. The cifs.ko works great. Now I can stream videos to my N800.

You guys are confusing people with using the cifs.ko on the SE OS2006 as is not need it. Thanks again for a grate tutorial! |
Re: samba support mounting n800
Well, if you don't need it then don't use it ;-) Bus seriously AFAIK, CIFS was not enabled in any kernel in official Nokia firmware. Maybe you flashed custom kernel with CIFS enabled?
As they don't support mounting network shares officially and there is no user friendly interface for it, enabling CIFS would make it a dead weight in kernel taking up precious non-swappable RAM (and CIFS code is quite big, module is >250KB). Nokia did numerous other memory-wise optimizations that save less memory than 250KB so having cifs enabled wouldn't be very clever in that context. |

No I did not flash a custome firmware I flash the official firmware from the maemo site.... Can some body else running 2.1 withouth the ciffs.ko from fanoush try using ciffs?!? This is very strange.. ooo and I didnt meant I didnt need it ;) Thanks for your grate work! |
Re: samba support mounting n800
hi fanoush - any chance of updating NFS support for N800/OS2007 when you get a chance? No rush (seriously!). Thanks :)

Re: samba support mounting n800
I got a mount!
Damn it's cool to browse my PC from the N800's file manager! Thank you Fanoush! |
Re: samba support mounting n800
Hmm... this NFS stuff doesn't work for me.
I inserted all three modules... Error: "Mounting failed: Invalid Argument" I was mounting with "-t nfs". Does anyone have a working NFS mount on OS2007? |
