Would it be feasible in fmms to mask / unmask the apn entry using gconftool so that there is only one umts connection in ICD when fmms is not actively engaged in sending / receiving?

I've actually thought about something like this - I'll see if I can get it implemented in a nice way. :) Great idea! :)

[2010-01-20 23:14:19] fmms 0.2.3-1 has been queued for loading into fremantle extras-devel repository

changelog:
Code:

0.2.3:
        * fixed bug where long-tap -> "open" would not launch imageviewer
        * added search in contact list when sending
        * now sends x-wap-profile header when sending mms

didn't read the ua-prof docs that carefully, but sending the x-wap-profile header might help ;)

FYI frals, I have been testing setting x-wap-profile in the past few nights but unfortunately I have not been able to get the results I am hoping for.

I checked fmms v0.2.3, and it appears that x-wap-profile is set when sending MMS but not when receiving MMS.

My approach is to set it during MMS retrieval so the server can properly identify the capabilities of the N900.

For my test, I lowered MmsMaxImageResolution in the rdf to some significantly small resolution. (I am doing this because I am able to receive images in its original size)

I will keep trying later and if interested, I can post my findings here.

Thanks for all the great work!

Uh, I blame brain meltdown for setting it when sending, obviously it makes more sense to do it when receiving. :)

Please do. :)

Thanks!

@firstknight: did that appear only in the latest version?

We have contacted frals to congratulate him for his work, and to offer him concrete help in areas where help is missing. Nothing new, we have been doing this with other Fremantle stars (I guess nobody doubts that frals is a Star). :)

We will help him with the UI in the lines of the UX Meets Code hackfest, and we will also help dealing with some Maemo interfaces fMMS needs (the release of the wappushd-dev package in the last Maemo SDK update was a first step).

In fact we have invited frals to visit the Maemo headquarters in Helsinki, so he can meet our developers and designers face to face. Sweden is just around the corner anyway. ;)

Said that, we have no intention of supporting MMS in Fremantle ourselves. That was and is our plan. The fact that MMS got a big user demand and the fact that an open source community project is satisfying it just tells you that there is something good going on here.

I have added a short interview with frals on maemosweden.com. It is in Swedish but with some (span class="notranslate") tags it is read-able via the google translate function on the site.

I don't remember seeing an announcement from Nokia saying they are not supporting MMS on the N900 themselves until just now -- someone correct me if I am wrong. This would have been helpful information for some users contemplating their purchase. It makes us particularly thankful to the developer and to the users in this thread, who were also essential in this step forward.

I'd suggest the other way - find one that says they will? - people have said it, but never seen an official one.

If they are supporting Frals, then there should be no reason to have any concern :) (Hoping Frals will let us know how he feels :) - and hopefully enjoys a free holiday/work trip :) )

I'd be stupid not to go, and of course it feels great to receive this kind of support (both from the community and Maemo). :)

Attached is patch that sets x-wap-profile header when retrieving MMS. I am still not able to downscale incoming image but it could be that my provider is caching and ignoring UAProf (?)

Great, thanks!

Seems my carrier just ignores it as well - on the other hand I've registred a few hits on n900.rdf during the day from some IP's that does look like MMS GW's actually fetching the file (unless it's people downloading it manually without a user-agent set) - among others PlusGSM, vodafone and some finnish carrier I can't rememer the name of. I'll get a release together tonight and crossing fingers it works :)

Hey All,

Been using fMMS and its working great - except as mentioned by three others in this thread the image does not appear to be attached when I MMS a blackberry (it works fine when I messaged an iPhone). Are there any solutions for this as of yet?

Sorry no work around yet, going to go through the SMIL generation at some point (which should be what is causing this, I *think*)

what about closing current mms window after it is sent and maybe changing the text that is under sender datas in main fMms window. maybe new field with title or puting there text which is inside??
I was just wondering :)

I am very surprised to hear that cause everything I've read said that Nokia would be releasing an update with MMS. This was one of the reasons I brought the phone. Surely MMS is such a key aspect of the texting culture - it's like releasing a phone that can't send SMS!

That said the work Frals has been doing for this is really great and I'm pleased that Nokia are supporting him with it.

Looking forward to the time it is more integrated in the the phone, but I'm sure thats many many hours away.

Okey. When i try to pick contact form list to TO field it says "pick a number". Only way to send is to write number to to field.

.edit
I mean that it says pick number and there is no number. I haven tested all contacts yet.

Okey. Problem might be that I have gsm numbers in phone field and no number in mobile field :|

@FRALS

is there a a way to deceive our GSM providers to think that the n900 is a n95, so they do not resize the images?

I've thought about making it close the window after the message has been sent, but it will have to wait until I've implemented folders (ie "Sent", "Outbox" or something similiar). Also need to implement a way to make sure it actually got sent, but that should be easy ;)

Same here kinda, the idea is to change storage of the messages and related information in a database instead of in lots of files - when that's done the "main view" will get better information :)

Hmm, this shouldn't be a problem - which version are you using? Since 0.2.1 the algorithm *SHOULD* catch any number from the contact - since it gets the vcard as a string and any line matching "TEL;" is parsed and saved as a number. If you are running 0.2.1+ give me a PM and we can do some more debugging :)

It's being worked on - hopefully 0.2.4 and later should fix this :)

0.2.5-1 uploaded to repos and garage.
Changelog:
0.2.5:
* profile header removed as this should be translated to x-wap-profile
* ui "loading" indicator added in a few places, like when sending
* replaced ugly dbus-calls with less ugly update_ui function

Re: [Announce] fMMS for N900

After downloading 2.5-1..and do some testing..this is what i get:

I sent a 839kb pic and i get:

- These recipients of your message have been processed by the mail server:
(my##)/TYPE=PLMN@tmomail.net; Failed; 5.3.4 (message too big for system)

Remote MTA 10.184.33.185: network error

- SMTP protocol diagnostic: 552 MAIL FROM:<myname@comcast.net> max message size exceeded

So apparently any file greater than a certain size can not be accepted...but this is just 839kb? It's not that big. I sent one with 126kb and it did receive but the picture is STILL small like thumbnail size.

Seems TMO ignores the x-wap-profile header as I've not seen any hits on the UAProf url from any unknown IP.

From what I've gathered, some carriers doesnt allow MMS over 300kb, which might be what you are experiencing. They should still read the x-wap-profile header and get the information from there though.

Exactly what size is the image when it comes through to your phone?

Re: [Announce] fMMS for N900

Is there any way to set which packet data connection is preferred? I set up a second "MMS" APN using fAPN. It does actually work for normal data too, but is slower than the standard "internet" APN.

Anyway, when I leave a WiFi network my N900 seems to always choose the new MMS APN instead of the original "internet" one. I have tried changing the name of my new "MMS" connection but it doesn't seem to be using alphabetical order.

Is the solution to delete both connections and then set them both up again in fAPN, hoping it will default to the second one I define?

Some other findings.

- Error handling for configuration fields. I could enter text to image width and it was saved to settings.

ATM I'm afraid I don't have a solution for you, I'm playing with the idea of doing what someone suggested a few pages back with "hiding" the MMS APN when fMMS is not active, which should solve it :)

For those interested in the issue with small images arriving, I'll add the stuff that is discussed at http://www.nowsms.com/discus/messages/485/21779.html (great forum for all this btw) and see if it works, can't swear I'll push an update tonight but I'll try.

And how small is very small? 160x120 or something else?

Either way: 0.2.6 is working its way through the autobuilder, it's now sending "Profile" and "x-wap-profile" header both when sending and receiving MMS, as well as a User-Agent string "Nokia N900 RX-51", if this doesn't change anything I guess the last step is to send a fake user-agent string matching the N95s.. I rather not though :P
