is there anyway to edit the fmms.log ? tried to download a few mss files from service provider again and now im stuck with the headers and no files. it simply will not allow me to delete them evenif i select yes or no nothing happens.

great program though keep up the good work

The log file just logs error messages and stuff - to really delete something you would have to delete the corresponding directory in /home/user/.fmms/mms/ as well as the entry for both the MMS and the Push message in the sqlite database stored in /home/user/.fmms/mms.db.

I'll work on making the "Delete" action less error prone and better to actually delete stuff ;)

For others also with this problem there is a solution for the time being, once you create the new APN for the mms you need to recreate the internet APN.

This is because when you go out of range of your wifi it defaults to the newest created APN (before the mms), so recreating the internet APN makes it the default instead.

Hopefully it should solve that problem for you.

edit: looks like I beaten to that one, sorry!

WOW! 61 pages on setting up MMS for the N900 huh. I guess I'll just screw it and wait for an official release of MMS on the N900 before messing up and screwing with my phone. Man this phone is really for a Linux techie geek and if you aren't a techie, then you need to waste hours and hours days and days reading through all of these forums on how to do small stuff.

For example take the new levels for Angry Birds that just came out. You have to do like 5 things before you become successfull and you must know how to do each one of those things, hence, my saying that you must research threads all day to learn this stuff.

I love my N900 but I ran out of reasons to show it off lol. Too much "command line" sh*t you have to do. My wife has one as well and her phone is still basic with nothing on it but yet she loves it. If she wanted to download or install anything, she wouldn't know the first thing about even setting up repositories unless I do it for her. Still not an end user phone and I wonder how much longer it will be before we see all this stuff simplified.

I mean Nokia did intend for the N900 to eventually be an end user device right? Or am I wrong and they only wanted it for geeks?

It's rather 61 pages about assorted stuff related to the application, it's not all about settings really... :P Around page, err, 37? There is a comment that official MMS support is not planned for release on the N900.

So yeah, I spent today with the _awesome_ people at Maemo and got more then a few pointers - basically I got answers to everything I wanted to ask about.

Regarding integration with Conversations: It's off the TODO-list - basically it's way to much effort as it stands atm. Standalone it is, for the foreseeable future.

Automatic fetching of MMS regardless of active connection - solveable, I got the stuff I need, but it's a bit tricky making sure it works correctly :)

Sharing service - should be straightforward as well. :)

Loads of small UI tweaks on the list - hopefully it should improve the user experience :)

Overall, I'm just amazed how nice and helpful everyone was, and a big thanks to everyone there for having me :)

/me heads back to bed, never again the morning flight to Helsinki :P

Wow frals playing with the big boys :). Deserved too such a great application. How are the developers I've heard a rumour that they are only 2 feet tall and wear purple and yellow every day and only eat seaweed :) lol

Can't wait for the regardless of connection feature. I am cancelling data plan with T-mobile as i don't use it much outside of work. I use it at home with wi-fi MOSTLY.

Uh, my bad for the phrasing - the MMS APN is still the one thats going to be used - its just gonna be (mostly) transparent to the user that its happening. :)

How comes this app isn't out of the dev area yet? Are there no plans to get it into testing and then live (what's the right terminology for maemo?)?

Will be even better with automatic MMS APN detection/use. Will that also work for incoming MMS messages? (My understanding is that if a MMS is received then you need to change connection to MMS APN before you can open/retrieve it).

Because it's far from end-user ready, simple as that ;) I'll promote it to -testing as soon as I consider it ready for endusers, I promise ;)

The plan is for automatic setup of all the settings as well as setting up the connection when sending and receiving :)

@cloris: You got mail

Sounds good. I just thought it was a heavily used app and it's been in use for a while so there was some other reason it hadn't got out of dev stage.

Keep up the good work!

Yeah, I was mousing over to mod that post down. Woops.

fMMS is going down as text book for FOSS initiative and the future of relationships between developer, end user and manufacturer. I hope in the long run that this kind of strategy will help keep prices down and quality up. What is Microsoft's market share in this space and how is it trending? All of the current and relevant products in this arena are standing on the shoulders of the open source/open standards movements in one form or another.

frals was still doing fundemental research as of early November, and he officially just announced fMMS less than a month ago! The cream rises to the top, and he's a great example, but there's plenty of killer stuff going on around here. It seems to be nicely infectious, but it takes a constructively positive village. So when it comes to people giving freely, pour the sour stuff down the drain. And then MMS a happy picture of yourself to your grandmother.

Re: [Announce] fMMS for N900

Hi guys - I downloaded fMMS from the dev repo today. From my testing so far, all is working well for me (well, the basics - which is great, so don't mean that to sound negative).

I'm on O2 in the UK - I've sent and received picture and text.
My received pic was pretty small - but I believe that might well be the screen resolution and the senders phone doesn't half shrik them down - I think! (I'll try check on this some more).

The one thing that went wrong for me - which I've not noticed anyone else mention (and searched for it so sorry if I've missed it)...
On sending, I picked the contact which it did fine, but it seems to be classing me as a completely different contact in my address book!

The log roughly says...
search for Joe Bloggs gave: ['Joe Bloggs'] <this is correct - as in who I am sending to, directly followed by...
search for John Doe gave ['John Doe'] < some random contact from my list!

Now my outgoing message is marked with this other persons name!
The only thing I can think of is that this contact it has chosen happens to only have a mobile number of '0' (this stems from an old phone I had where I recorded someones email address only but it wanted a number too - so I gave it 0!

I'm assuming the answer is to get rid of this (but I only just thought of it so haven't tried it yet). Hopefully this is useful if not a random occurrence stemming from a very rare situation. Again I'll try test this some more, but it is late for me now!

Thanks for listening and keep up the good work!

It's a bug in fMMS, I'm currently doing the contact matching really sloppy, I'm looking at fixing it ;)

Thanks for testing! :)

Re: [Announce] fMMS for N900

don't know if this is already mentioned but today I just went and tried something out and it worked.

A thought only images could be send and recieved with fMMS but apperently it also accepted the ohoh.wav that I use for incomming IM.

so *.wav files can be recieved too haven't tried sending one yet but will probably work too.

Still love the app and using it frequently it's the first thing I install after a FW upgrade

suddenly i'm wondering if *.mp3 might work too. and maybe even *.mp4 or *.3gp

Just to say that despite my best efforts and the workaround, my device still insists on connecting to the mms apn. I've removed and deleted it and the others, in various orders. I still suspect it's a signal strength issue. It's not random - it always connects to the mms one!! I've got used to it, but I'm mystified! Open to suggestions... well, clean ones!

I've been struggling with the same issue for some time and now I think it's solved. This is what I did:

1. Created the MMS APN
2. Created duplicate APN for my normal packet connection
3. Selected the MSS APN in fMMS
4. Edited the MMS APN to match the correct settings for it.
5. Edited the duplicate APN. (Just saved it actually)

And now all the other apps seem to be using the duplicate APN. :)

And just to be ultra sure I named the duplicate APN in a way that it comes alphabetically after the MMS APN. :D

Could you PM me _exactly_ what it reads? You can copy and paste from the builtin terminal (drag to mark, appmenu got "Copy"). Thanks!

@rldstover48: No idea about your plan I'm afraid - safest is to ask your carrier if MMS is included in the plan or if they cost you extra.

Sorry for not posting any new versions lately, been busy with uni and the trip to Helsinki. I got quite a few UI improvements done but I've managed to break the tap-and-hold menu so have to fix that somehow before posting a new version :P

Nice program! Works like a charm...

I don't know if it's mentioned in this thread before but here are the settings for T-Mobile Germany:

T-Mobile Germany
•Connection Name: t-mobile mms
•Connection Type: Packet Data
•Access Point Name: mms.t-d1.de
•User Name: t-mobile
•Password: mms
•Use Proxy: Yes
•HTTP Proxy: 172.28.23.131
•Port Number: 8008
•MMSC: http://mms.t-mobile.de/servlets/mms/
•Resize Image: 300
•Your Phone Number: +49(Your Phone Number)

I also added the settings to the wiki.

Regards,
Stephan

Okey - a workaround is to delete the file /home/user/.fmms/mms.db. By doing this you won't be able to see any old messages in fMMS any more.

(Open x-terminal, type: rm /home/user/.fmms/mms.db)

I assume the sending did not work either - most likely because the message attachment was too big, try changing the image resize width to a lower value. :)

I installed this and already sent about 20 pictures lol.
thanks frals.
I installed this through extras devel and I did not wanted to keep the devels repository on so I disabled it after installing this app.
and when this is finally on the extras for normal users will it tell me that this has an update or how do I know that there is an update to this or this has been moved to extras?

Not sure if this has already been mentioned, but say you have a contact that has many numbers. for example first is normal mobilephone number and second one is work phone. when I get a mms from normal mobilephone number, in inbox also name is shown. If I get it from the work number, only number is displayed and no name.

It should notify you there is an update when it reaches extras - be aware that this might take quite some time ;)

I'm aware of this, it's due to sloppy matching currently to speed the app launch a bit, planning to get it to work properly at some point ;)

Thanks everyone for testing!
