Re: Overclock the N900?

Guys i got a problem :(
I need to flash the kernel through the maemo-flasher... So i downloaded the last deb package (kernel-power_2.6.28-maemo40_armel.deb) from here:

http://repository.maemo.org/extras-d.../kernel-power/

I unpacked the deb with 7 zip ... and i've obtained the file zImage-2.6.28-maemo40.fiasco ... that should be the kernel ...
Then i flashed it with the maemo flasher with the command

flasher-3.5.exe -k zImage-2.6.28-maemo40.fiasco -f

and everything seems to be all right .. the flasher didn't give me any error message..
But , booting the phone, it appears only the white screen with nokia written T_T
Then the yellow led turns on for one second and the phone automatically shout down .. :(

What could be the problem?

Why did you do it like that and not via the app manager?

Re: Overclock the N900?

You can find the answer here :
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=58633&page=11

In practice... i'm trying to create a backup of the whole system with backupmenu :)
This would allow me not to lose al lot of hours reinstalling all apps...
But, if before restoring the images of root and OPT, i flash with the fiasco image... then, after the restore, the titan kernel seems to have disappeared.. T_T

I thought that the kernel was in the root .. so restoring my old root image even the kernel was there... But the kernel isn't there .. (by the way .. where is the kernel??? >.< )

So, to solve the problem i would like to install the kernel by flasher because the package appears to be already installed in the system (because the kernel was there when i created the image ..)

I do not know if my English is good enough that I made you understand the problem :P

i overlocked my n900 250~1000mhz using ulv is that ok or should i use ideal profile?
everything is fine, no crashes or reboot my n900 is stable.

Re: Overclock the N900?

I get this error
/home/user # kernel-config show
This kernel version 2.6.28-omap1 is not supported
Please make sure that kernel-power is installed and running.
If you have just installed the kernel, you need to shutdown and boot to activate it.
To reinstall the power user kernel run:
'apt-get install --reinstall kernel-power kernel-power-flasher'
Have uninstall and reinstalled with no luck
Tried versions 37 to 40
Have reflashed phone twice the annoying thing is it did work
a few weeks ago with version 37 until i updated to version 39
Can access phone by via winscp is there anyway to manualy
delete all trace of the kernel and start again.

Any help please

Running kernel 2.6.28 - 10

I have over clocked to 850 (using the 3 lines in x term) all works just fine and have added QB and the stock button to go back to 600 just in case

I would like to add a ideal button as well but not at 1000 but at 850

If i understand rightly I can do :

1. Launch xterminal
2. Sudo gainroot
3. kernel-config load lv
4. kernel-config limits 250 850
5. kernel-config save ideal_850

Then in snippet _ideal_1000 I just rename load ideal_1000 to load ideal_850 (ligne 27)

Is this all Ok before I try it ?

I may of missed something completely here as a noob to Linux, so please bare with me

many thanks

can anyone confirm if good or bad please

Re: Overclock the N900?

can anyone help me overclock?
it was working fine until i installed nitdroid-installer
perviously it worked fine with the manual install of nitdroid
but now nothing i try works
i removed nitdroid (and dont want it back!)
tried removing power settings and reinstalling it

i just cant overclock anymore, and have wasted at least 6 hours trying all the solutions in the nitdroid threads
(most of which have now been locked with links telling me to join another forum for help)
im not gonna be able to sleep until my phone is perfect again lol:D

at the moment if i type kernel-config load ideal
it says this kernel version is not supported, make sure its installed and running?
it is installed though, thats the strange bit

deanoman99 2010-08-19 08:42

Re: Overclock the N900?

This is how I got it to work
1 remove power settings via app manager
2 go to the menu and click on deinstall kernel-power-flasher
3 reboot phone
4 open app manager disable extra-devel & extra testing
5 install power kernel (should be version 37)
6 reboot phone
7 install power settings
8 reboot phone
9 should now work

Like you I have spent hours trying to get this to work

If you are feeling brave open app manager & rein-able extra
& extra testing and update to the power kernel to version 40
then reboot
If it still works I would recommend following this guide and install
nitdroid again because it is easy & worth it!

Good luck

Ok i have had my device overclocked for a few weeks now, and i know that i cant apdate applications while the power kernel is installed. So i followed all the steps for uninstalling and have the stock Nokia one back now. But i still cant seem to get any updates through any app manager.

When will the kernel be able to overclock the cpu and also be able to get simple updates through app manager??

This has nothing with the power kernel to do. You have probably installed another program from devel that makes the conflict.

You can update applications,
you cant update kernel if one will be availible which would happen about once/twice a year.. and nothing looks there will be update soon, so no problem there.

(I have zipped up each widget's export output as a txt file)

http://talk.maemo.org/attachment.php...1&d=1274397770

http://img192.imageshack.us/img192/5...0052109205.png

INSTALL STEPS

0. Download the attachment posted at beginning of that post and extract its contents. Then copy the TXT files into any folder in N900. (just create a folder called 'Beecon Exports' or something)
1. Install rootsh (latest version will do)
2. Install QBW (latest version is 1.9.7 or something)
3. Create a new QBW widget on the desktop
4. Go to settings of that widget (tool icon)
5. click advanced
6. click yes
7. scroll way down
8. click Import File to Buffer
9. Select the txt file you want to enable (eg. stock)
10. click Import Buffer to Beecon
11. done. now exit out and click Save.
12. Now go back to settings of that widget called STOCK
13. click Edit Cmd
14. replace "rootsh" with "sudo" then click save.
15. click save
16. Now you have a STOCK widget.

Do the same for ideal.txt and ideal_1000
Do the same up to step 11 for other non OC widgets

You can edit the cmd for ideal and ideal_1000 once they are created to suit your needs or loading your own profiles as per steps 12-13.

How do I edit the command or beecon for stock? I have pressed the stock beecon and it still remains at 1000mhz frequency. Presumably because my stock frequency is set to 1000mhz rather than 500mhz.

Also how do I add a new beecon for a frequency other than default, e.g 850mhz?

Obviously these questions must have been answered in this thread already but you will appreciate my inability to go through 400 pages of posts searching for the answer.

In x-term type
Code:

sudo gainroot
leafpad /home/user/.kernel/"whatever the filename is, probably STOCK"

Then change the MAXFREQ entry.

First load a profile you are comfortable with, e.g LV, ULV, XLV or Ideal. We'll use LV in this case, In x-term type:

Code:

sudo gainroot
kernel-config load lv

Then set the min and max frequency to what you want:
Code:

kernel-config limits 250 850
Then you can save the profile with whatever name you choose, in this case we'll use 850max
Code:

kernel-config save 850max

I overclocked my N900 to 850MHz ... It has undoubtedly become faster .. opened openoffice in 2 mins ...
I did not find any issue yet like heating ... battery is always an issue with N900 and hence I prefer to keet it charged always ...

Re: Overclock the N900?

I used the method described at..

http://scratching.psybermonkey.net/2...sor-speed.html

Problem is when I turn the phone OFF and back ON, the bump in MHz is back to 600? So does this NOT stay as the setting when I reboot? I went back into the Shell and executed the command to bump it back up, but hell I don't want to have to do this every time I reboot my phone. But if that's the case, any help, or is it possible, to write script to execute the shell command on boot up to set the over clock speed? THANKS!

DeeGee 2010-08-24 04:26

Re: Overclock the N900?

That method looks overly complicated.
I just used this guide on the wiki.
I seem to have very nicely overclocking unit as it runs at 1150mhz with the "ideal" settings. For that i just made copy of the ideal settings file and changed the max clocks to 1150. Then set that file as the default one to load at boot (kernel-config default idealmax).

Gorilla72 2010-08-24 05:18

Re: Overclock the N900?

Well it already is installed and works, I just need a way to run a script at bootup to initiate the command instead of me having to go into the Terminal and retype it. Perhaps a shortcut I can click? Something to that effect. Also any way anyone knows to CUT and PASTE into Terminal from another area/program, is that possible? Kind of new to this phone and hacking into it like this, so please forgive me if some of theses questions are "DAAAAAA" answer for some of you. But that would mean I"m at the right place to ask the questions..

Thanks!

Re: Overclock the N900?

@gorilla72...

Code:

kernel-config setdefault ideal
gives you ideal profile everytime phone starts. just change ideal to lv , xlv etc to use your profile.

to revert to default(stock profile 250-600mhz) on boot just change ideal to
Code:

kernel-config setdefault default

Ok, help out the Noob here. Right now when I boot up I have to type in...

echo 900000 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_max_freq | echo ""

This overclocks to 900 Mhz (sometimes I do 1Ghz, but you get the idea). So how do I translate this to what you are talking about to run "ideal". Are you saying 'ideal = 900000', to use the above example?

And thanks for the help by the way, appreciate it.

Re: Overclock the N900?

Hi

After trying to understand all the different ways through all these pages , I have done this :

1. Launch xterminal
2. Sudo gainroot
3. kernel-config load lv
4. kernel-config limits 250 850
5. kernel-config save ideal_850
6. kernel-config default ideal_850

7 kernel-config default default (resets kernel back to original 600)

Queen Beecon widget is far to complicated for me and extremly unclear,

So I tried this using two scripts

#1 'default_kernel.desktop' placed in /usr/share/applications/hildon

[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Version=0.1
Type=Application
Terminal=true
Name=default kernel
Exec=osso-xterm "sh /opt/scripts/reset_default"
Icon=
X-Window-Icon=
X-HildonDesk-ShowInToolbar=false
X-Osso-Type=application/x-executable

________________

and the second script
#2 named 'reset_default' placed in /opt/scripts

echo Your Nokia N900 kernel is being reset
sudo gainroot
kernel-config default default
echo Your Nokia Kernel is reset to default :)

I have the little blue widget named 'default kernel' on my desktop which takes me to the line 'Your Nokia N900 kernel is being reset', but then asks me for a password, so I'm stuck

any ideas ?

As a newbie in Linux, maybe I'm way of, for info when i type in 'sudo gainroot' in xterm it works just great

Guys I have problem
I'm with kernel v37
and I overclock N900 with
kernel-config load ideal
kernel-config limits 250 850

But in Conky min limit is not 250, it is 500 Mhz

How to set minimal limit to 250?

From 600 to 800, that's expected.

Most of GUI transition effects are GPU accelerated and overclocking does not improve it really. But that extra 200Mhz should make the N900 slightly more responsive overall. Also, apps such as game emulators, My Paint etc should be faster. It's more apparent if you go to 1GHz. :)

pindu 2010-08-26 12:51

Re: Overclock the N900?

if i overclock further up to 900 i should see a little bit of an increase in responsiveness compared to 800?

is it best to overclock just the cpu or is it best to overclock both the cpu and dsp? (i have just overclocked the cpu).

overclocked from 800/125 to 900/125 today and things are quite a bit faster but i dont know if it justifies putting the phone at more risk just for the extra 100mhz so am thinking of maybe going back to 800.

some devices are capable of handling lower voltages, so if starving does not work, then ideal w/c is the second low voltage settings might work for you, about 90% chance.

i overclock up to 1.15ghz, and its so awesome!!!!!

No, no one is able to answer. You are probably ok, but there is no guarantee. You are expecting someone to pop up and say "oh, yes, I guarantee you will be fine! Just send me the bill if you have any problems!"

Ain't gonna happen.

No no, I just want to have a picture of how safe it can be running at that frequency, starving profile as default :) I don't need anyone to guarantee. If I didn't know the possible risks, I wouldn't overclock in the first place ;)
But thanks for the laugh :)
