This is a false debate:

The question is .. want a durable phone but slow as a turtle, or prefer one that ".. only you serve two years .." efficiently .. and swift as a workstation

The choice is yours..

Re: Overclock the N900?

Couple of things I was wondering.

One thing Ocers ask themselves before testing an over clock is if there is enough cooling.

Is there a Mod we can do to help with heat? It could be as simple as taking out the stylus, or as fun as drilling holes in the battery cover.

I think many of us would be equipped to go so far as to apply some extra thermal paste to the two little heat sinks.

It's unfortunate because the only phone that can properly browse all of engadget is the N900.

If world was always so simple place.
There's a reason why N900 and Palm Pre are running the same exact processor in 600mhz and Motorola Droid is running it on 550mhz.
I'm running mine 900mhz. Looking the phase i buy phones, i'm not going to sell my N900 and i'm ready to lose my N900. Honestly what harm is there to tell people that risks are there?

I have learned this by doing very minor overclocking on my old computer and that focked up the proc for the 1/2 year i used the computer while my current computer have gone 30% increase and temperatures are the same as given by the manufacturer(been in use for a year).

Non of the processors are identical and not the circustanes either. After you have got the message be my guess and flash the device like me, but nothing wrong with warning people.

incognito Posted Apr 5th 2010 6:20 IŽAM glad I tipped you on this one, but the title of this article couldn't be more wrong. Tho I guess the ad revenue benefits from such strong words... And then someone asks why is Engadget considered to be an Apple fanboi blog, and some even consider it as 'Nokia haters united'... I don't see how the N900 can be in danger of obsolescence - especially not obsolescence by MeeGo as the N900 is one of the prime testbed platforms for developing the MeeGo in the first place.

N900 will probably have MeeGo even before its successor arrives (due to late fall, and it actually won't be using the real MeeGo, but Maemo 6 (Harmattan) rebranded as MeeGo) and since its successor will be running on the same platform (OMAP 3430) but probably a different form-factor (probably sporting a capacitive touchscreen, which would be a serious step backwards; and possibly without a QWERTY keyboard which would be a definite dealbreaker for plenty of people) I don't see anything endangering the N900 for at least next six quarters.

N900 simply is one of the most hackable handheld devices out there, it has the best web browser (w/ full Flash support of course) and a real multitasking like no other device in this form factor, it's the most user friendly device coming from a large corporation (and when I say user friendly I don't mean the UI; tho I have no complains in that department as well; but the level of control it gives to its users i.e. you reall OWN the device), it sports a desktop-grade GNU/Linux OS (and with MeeGo things will only get better), it has a plethora of connectivity options, has one of the highest HW specs for handheld devices out there... It trully is a mobile computer. And there is no handheld device that can compete with it in that arena. So calling it obsolete is a cheap, sensationalist trick even for Engadget.

Strange. I flashed with the zImage 800mhz kernel and my information still shows in settings as Maemo5, etc and is (based on Conky and app performance) clocking from 125mhz min and 800mhz max. I did the "fiasco" process to flash, but probably makes no difference (a flash is a flash).

Re: Overclock the N900?

It would be interesting to see what users would do if there was a report of brickage at 900 or 800mhz. Then what do we do? Risk it or go back to the slower kernel? I am sure there will still be people who will keep running the higher clock speeds at the expense of bricking.
But that would be a very tough decision after experiencing great increase in speed....

Lets see

Re: Overclock the N900?

If my N900 lasts me 6 months at 900mhz, I'll be happy, since by then the exterior of the phone wil be pretty much trashed (yes, my N900 has a hard life).

I would be surprised if we don't see 1.5Ghz mobiles in the next year, so the point of the life expectancy of an overclocked 900 being only 3 years is a moot one to me.

Personally, I'm using the 900 a lot more for browsing now thats web pages load in a practical snap at 900mhz.

flasher-3.5.exe -F zImage-700mhz -f -R

and not

i found out i did flasher-3.5 -k zImage-900mhz -f -R

It seems that most people after flashing one of the overclocked kernels onto the device gets "Version: Unknown" listed in "About the product". This is however not the case for me (I use the 900ghz image), and I wonder if this could be due to me using fiasco-flasher on the device instead of the Flasher-3.5.

Not important, but just a little bit interesting.

Wrong: This is quite an interesting and inspiring thread, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who has read the whole damned thing.

This thread captures the spirit of why many of us bought an N900. We are in it for the adventure. Maybe we are wrong in overclocking our N900s, but those who are trying to kill this spirit are not just shooting the community in the foot -- they are shooting the community in the brain.

Edit: By the way, I personally hope to buy a Meego phone if my N900 dies prematurely, which would seem to be in Nokia's interest.

The decision to overclock or not to overclock is indeed up to the individual user. However, that being said - I will rain down with furious vengeance on those (if any) come back here complaining they cooked their N900. Myself I flashed - checked it and went back to stock. While the speed improvement was nice, I am going to wait to see what 1.2 has in store for us before making a permanent decision on OCing.

To users who have never overclocked a CPU before.

OVER CLOCKING CAN SERIOUSLY DAMAGE COMPONENTS!

You can damage your n900 and invaildate your warranty.

Becareful and do it at your own risk!

It's not really about the clockspeed. It's much more about the multicore design. OMAP4 won't have anything over 1ghz processors for year to come. Tegra 2 is maxed to 1ghz(will have two of them) and Snapdragon next generation(Snapdragon 2) will be running on 1.3ghz.

Very sound logic. If 1.2 makes the device perform as smoothly as the 800mhz rom and Flash media and games play as well (this will take Flash 10.1, of course). I will change back to stock too.

We should get Flash 10.1 sometime later this year, so I may go back then. Truth is, almost all Flash content plays smooth now, so it will take Flash 10.1 to get me to revert back anyways.

Added:

Still, if I used the N900 as my main device & phone, I would probably have not OC'd in the first place. Maybe not, or perhaps the 700mhz version ;)

BTW, I hope nobody has a fried N900 due to OC, but I look forward to the post and Bratag's reply to them :) ;)

Re: Overclock the N900?

If default clock speed = 600Mhz, and for certain process, it takes up constant 100% usage over a period of say 10s?

VS

clock speed = 900Mhz, and for similar process, it takes up constant 100% usage over a period of say 3s?

Base on above, does it mean OC is better?

On another hand, if running apps like PSX4ALL over long periods say 1hr, the impact/damage will be on 900Mhz?

Exactly how did you go back to stock? Did you have to do a full reflash or did you just replace the kernel.?

Which kernel file did you use and do you have the original info at ( System: Settings: About Product ) restored?

I think the main issue/problem is:
Cannot be detected/identified by NSU and/or PC Suite.

But, somehow previously 2 member test and confirm it was able to be identified.
But then, reading Lehto guide, it did state that NSU will no longer work.
http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...&postcount=309

Probably related to the firmware information. Some people still have their firmware information, while some shows Unknown.
How to maintain the firmware information?

Nice UBIFS corruption here. Again, can't say for sure whether it's related to overclocking (it's known to have been happened before too) but I'd recommend to keep an eye on suspicious activity in output of dmesg...

Going for a full reflash...
