You can separately adjust the CPU and DSP. Overclocking the DSP didnt really make any difference I think, as I dont have any good way to test it. I put it from 430mhz to 540mhz. Overclocking the video accelerator is going to be a much trickier part as I dont think its driver is open source and not really that useful just yet.

I think the DSP is mostly used for media processing, encoding and decoding H.264 for example. Testing 720p (or 1080p @1020/540 :)) playback would probably be a good benchmark, but I guess the applications and codecs aren't ready for that at this point?

Lehto - would you be willing to email me the files for flashing to 900mhz. I'd appreciate it very much, nd4001 at google mail. Thanks for your work

Hey!
I got only my laptop with Ubuntu 32bit with me currently and as i'm total noob with Ubuntu and Linux in general i would appreciate if somebody could post detailed instructions.
I do already have the zImage i need.

Re: Overclock the N900?

I'm interested to know what speed difference you notice using flash websites.

For instance is grooveshark.com usable?

titi974 2010-04-03 19:51

Re: Overclock the N900?

without dsp OCed, it starts it, you can hear smthg for less than 1 sec and then "buffering" (n900 OCed 900mhz)

Re: Overclock the N900?

lehto,

Could you email me the kernal for operating at 800 mhz please?

I fully understand that worst case it'll destroy my N900, but from what I've done before and what I've read, 800mhz seems a pretty safe overclock for the N900.

Would love to try anyway.

cheers,
Dave

flasher is there...

1. Put phone to update mode (phone off, Press and hold U plug in usb cable) then run

2. flasher-3.5 -k zImage -f -R

because it can damage your phone. u cant just go around flashing kernel images onto your phone willy nilly

yet the guy you just gave instructions to, on how to flash, clearly has never done it before.

Well i have flashed my N900 using Vista couple of times, but i have used Ubuntu for 10hrs so i'm not exactly mastering it yet ;)
Imo it's more about that people will accept that what could happen if all goes wrong and imo in that sense it might be better that the zImages aren't flying around too much :)

i'd like to try the 125-800mhz and 125-900mhz kernel, can any pm me the files please? i do get the risks.

thanks.

fair enough - I just figure that if someone is able to find and install Maemo Flasher, and knows enough to search for a zimage, that they're probably well aware of the possible ramifications.

of course, admittedly, i'm just frustrated that I have to wait for the files until they're shared somewhere or I get PM access.

michalurban 2010-04-03 20:25

Re: Overclock the N900?

PPL, please, upload those files ... Is it not more convenient then to respond numerous PMs? Just add some "your own risk" stuff ... anyway, everebody here knows they (we) can brick that thing up ... so what?

But if you still dont want to post the files, then Im interested in a kernel, ideally scaling 125-800mHz ... Thank you!

Austinek 2010-04-03 20:27

Re: Overclock the N900?

hmm i have the same problem with PM, no access :( please, please, please, upload it somewhere.

Can I also have a kernel scaling 125-800mhz?

Thanks.

Re: Overclock the N900?

I have just flashed mine to the 900Mhz kernel from Lehto. (125-900)

Here's some of my quick comparison. Before flash and after.

------600mhz--------

250mhz 12% during idle
500mhz 9% during charging

35sec HAM launch till downloads show up
20sec daum.net via MicroB
08sec sygic map loaded
09sec time to show tweego login screen

-------900mhz--------

125mhz 14% during idle
500mhz 8% during charging

26sec HAM launch till downloads show up
12sec daum.net via MicroB
06sec sygic map loaded
05sec time to show tweego login screen

can some one share 900mhz flash file with backup of original 600mhz?

on the "about" of settings does it still say phones version or unknown?

cheers

make sure you charge your battery to full before flashing incase!

also for those who have flashed, how is the battery life?

I CANNOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR WHATEVER HAPPENS AFTER YOU'VE DOWNLOADED THE FOLLOWING FILE. YOUR ON YOUR OWN. THE DEVICE COULD BE RENDERED BROKEN, USELESS OR SOME OTHER WAY LIMITED!!! ALSO NO HELP WILL BE PROVIDED BY ME TO FLASH IT TO YOUR PHONE.
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!

Have fun, dont break your device!

The faster kernels will come later if nobody reports a dead device in a week.

EDIT: Now also 650mhz available for the more careful people.

can you provide original please incase i want to go back.

thanks

MAKE SURE BATTERY IS FULL

make sure you put the kernel file into the maemo flasher folder on pc in windows it usaully c/prgramme files/maemo/flasher3.5

turn off n900 and hold u button on keyboard , connect the handset to the pc , a usb symbol should appear in top right of phone screen

on windows run maemo flasher as admin then run the command

flasher-3.5.exe -k zImage-800mhz -f -R

(please note that youll have to change the zimage-800mhz to whatever kernel your using ie zimage-900mhz or zimage-700mhz)

it should take approx 10 seconds max

make sure you put the kernel file into mameo flasher folder on pc so the flasher can find the file

PLEASE NOTE YOU DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK AND THERE ARE RISKS INVOLVED , PLEASE DO RESEARCH BEFORE FLASHING YOUR KERNEL ON YOUR N900 AND ONLY DO THIS IF YOU ARE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR DOING , IF YOU DONT I ADVISE NOT DOING IT AT ALL

No idea, If you do it over the NSU then yes.

Re: Overclock the N900?

I've just put on the 700mhz patch and even that speed increase has impressed me. Youtube videos load a lot faster and much more smooth.

I think ill keep it at this for a while and wait for the next one just in case, even tho i would love to try it.

''you can reinstall the stock kernel by typing apt-get --reinstall install kernel kernel-flasher.''
